SC Böblingen 1975 e.V. is a chess club based in Böblingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The club was officially founded on January 1, 1975, after a group of chess enthusiasts working at Hewlett-Packard Böblingen decided to transform their informal workplace games into an organized competitive club. Today, SC Böblingen belongs to the Schachverband Württemberg and competes within the Stuttgart chess district. Its regular playing venue is the elaya hotel in Böblingen-Hulb. The club offers competitive team chess, an open club championship, casual play, rapid chess, corporate chess, and social activities. Tuesday is the principal club evening, beginning at approximately 19:30. Hobby players and newcomers are welcome alongside experienced tournament players. Current federation records list just over 50 registered members, while the playing strength at the top of the club includes several FIDE Masters and other experienced competitors. Mario Born is the current Chairman and principal organizational contact of SC Böblingen 1975 e.V. Hans-Peter Remmler serves as Deputy Chairman. Born also directs the club’s flagship event, the traditional Böblinger Open, which attracts hundreds of players between Christmas and New Year. The next edition, the 42nd Böblinger Open, is scheduled for December 26–30, 2026.

📜 From Hewlett-Packard to SC Böblingen

The club’s history began during 1973 and 1974, when eight Hewlett-Packard employees in Böblingen regularly played chess during breakfast and lunch breaks. At a founding meeting in late October 1974, the group decided to enter formal competition both in company chess and within the Württemberg chess federation. The official foundation date became January 1, 1975. The founding members were Alfred Knecht, Reiner Laib, Josef Messner, Walter Pfau, Peter Pinkas, Gert Schmid, Herbert Schramm, and Dieter Schubert. For many years, the organization was known as Schachclub Hewlett-Packard Böblingen 1975 e.V.. In 2010, it adopted its present name, Schachclub Böblingen 1975 e.V., reflecting its broader identity beyond the company from which it originated. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025. Together with the chess section of Sportvereinigung Böblingen, it also marked 125 years of organized chess tradition in the city with the first Open Böblingen Rapid Chess Tournament.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Strength

SC Böblingen maintains four federation teams for the 2026–2027 season, providing competitive opportunities at several levels of Württemberg chess. The first team will compete in Oberliga Württemberg, with Mario Born serving as team captain. During 2025–2026, the team competed in the higher Baden-Württemberg league structure against strong clubs including OSG Baden-Baden III, Heilbronner SV, Karlsruher SF, SK Ettlingen, and SF Deizisau II. The second team competes in Verbandsliga Nord under captain Dr. Dietmar Fischer. The third team plays in Kreisklasse Stuttgart-West, while the fourth competes in A-Klasse Stuttgart-West. The club’s current player pool includes several titled competitors. Among its leading registered players are FM Valentin Kuklin, FM Ralf Müller, FM David Ortmann, and FM Peter Bauer, alongside other strong regional players. This depth allows SC Böblingen to combine serious upper-level team competition with playing opportunities for members across a much broader rating range.

🏆 Club Tournaments and Community Chess

The club runs an Open Club Championship across the season. The 2025–2026 edition began in September 2025 and consisted of seven classical rounds held approximately once per month at the elaya hotel. SC Böblingen also maintains a company chess team, continuing the connection with corporate chess that formed part of the club’s original identity. Peter Pinkas, one of the club’s founding members, remains the contact for this team. Social activities are another long-standing part of the club calendar. The organization traditionally arranges a chess weekend in Nesselwang, a summer gathering, an end-of-year celebration, and other events alongside formal competition. In September 2025, SC Böblingen and the chess section of Sportvereinigung Böblingen jointly organized the 1st Open Böblingen Rapid Chess Tournament under the patronage of the City of Böblingen. The event offered FIDE Rapid rating and a €1,500 prize fund, with IM Tobias Kölle winning the inaugural competition.

🌍 Böblinger Open

The Böblinger Open is the club’s most important tournament and one of the established year-end chess events in southern Germany. The 41st Böblinger Open, held from December 26–30, 2025, attracted 251 players from 14 countries. The tournament consisted of separate A and B Opens and nine rounds of classical chess. IM Tobias Kölle won the A-Open, while Moritz Hurm took first place in the B-Open. The 42nd Böblinger Open is scheduled for December 26–30, 2026 at the elaya hotel, Otto-Lilienthal-Straße 18, Böblingen. Once again, the competition will feature two sections: the A-Open for players with a tournament rating of at least 1900 and the B-Open for players rated below 2000. Both sections will use a nine-round Swiss system. The classical time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. The organizers expect a maximum field of approximately 280 players. The published main prizes include €1,200 for first place in the A-Open and €500 for the B-Open winner, together with additional main, rating, women’s, senior, and junior prizes. Mario Born serves as Tournament Director. IA Jonas Studer is the published Chief Arbiter, assisted by IA Michael Rütten. The Böblinger Open therefore continues the club’s decades-long tradition of bringing strong international tournament chess to the Stuttgart region.
