Fundacja Klub Szachowy Polonia Wrocław is a chess foundation based in Wrocław, Poland, supporting the sporting, educational, and tournament activities of KS Polonia Wrocław. The Foundation operates alongside the club organization, whose chess tradition dates back to 1946. Its work covers tournament organization, junior development, structured training, competition support, and projects designed to expand access to chess in Wrocław and beyond. The Foundation runs an exceptionally active tournament and training program from the Polonia chess center at Piaskowa 7–9 in central Wrocław. Regular competitions include Pierwszy Krok, Drugi Krok, the FIDE-rated Turniej o Tysiaka, the weekly Grand Prix Polonii Wrocław, and tournaments for young children. In addition, Polonia operates training groups from complete beginner level through competitive and high-performance chess, with titled coaches working with its strongest players. Artur Czyż currently serves as President of the Foundation’s Management Board and is the key leadership contact associated with the organization. The Foundation remains highly active in 2026, with tournaments scheduled throughout September, October, and November. Its largest forthcoming project is the Wroclaw Chess Festival 2026, scheduled for December 12–20, 2026, bringing Grandmasters, ambitious club players, juniors, beginners, and children together in a multi-event chess festival.

📜 Polonia Wrocław Chess Tradition

The wider Polonia Wrocław chess tradition dates to 1946. Over subsequent decades, the organization developed into a major center for competitive and junior chess in Lower Silesia. Today, the club combines participation in Poland’s highest-level team competitions with a large junior-development structure. Polonia competed in the Polish Ekstraliga in 2026, while its leading players regularly participate in Polish national championships and major international tournaments. The Foundation works as part of this broader organizational structure. Its founder is KS Polonia Wrocław Sp. z o.o., while the Foundation itself handles a significant part of the tournament, educational, and development program.

🎓 Junior Chess and Training

Junior development is one of the strongest areas of Polonia’s current activity. Training at Piaskowa 7–9 is divided according to age and playing strength, beginning with groups for children who do not yet know the moves and progressing through 1200–1400, 1400–1600, Sport, and high-performance groups. The coaching structure includes experienced trainers and titled players. GM Marcin Tazbir leads the elite performance group, while Mirosław Perdek works with the Sport group. Additional coaches provide instruction for younger and developing players. Polonia’s junior players achieved significant results during 2026. The club sent 42 players to the Polish Junior Rapid and Blitz Championships in Rzeszów. Polonia competitors collected 13 medals across the rapid and blitz championships, including several national titles. Earlier in July, club juniors also won four medals at the European Youth Rapid and Blitz Championships, including European titles for Krzysztof Raczek and Hanna Owczarek. These results reflect the scale of the Foundation’s pathway from beginner instruction to elite junior competition.

🏆 Tournament Program in Wrocław

The Foundation maintains a dense year-round tournament calendar designed for different stages of player development. Pierwszy Krok events introduce beginners to formal tournament chess. Separate groups are available for younger players and older beginners. The Drugi Krok series then provides competition for players generally rated between 1250 and 1600 PZSzach, with opportunities to earn Polish chess categories. Stronger players can enter the recurring Turniej o Tysiaka series. These weekend tournaments are generally open to players from 1400 PZSzach up to 2399 FIDE, use five Swiss-system rounds, and are submitted for FIDE standard rating. The typical time control is 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The Foundation also operates the Grand Prix Polonii Wrocław, normally held on Fridays, providing regular competition regardless of age, rating, or club affiliation.

🌟 Wroclaw Chess Festival 2026

The Wroclaw Chess Festival is the Foundation’s flagship international event. The festival has a tradition dating to 2005 and returns from December 12–20, 2026. The 2025 edition attracted 459 players from 13 countries, including 13 Grandmasters, and produced four international title norms. Therefore, the 2026 festival again combines high-level chess with tournaments accessible to amateurs and children. The main Open A and Open B tournaments will run from December 14–20 over nine classical rounds. Open A is reserved for players rated 2100 FIDE and above and offers opportunities for international title norms, while Open B is for players rated up to 2099 FIDE. The two main events offer a combined published prize fund of PLN 45,650, including PLN 36,600 in Open A. Games will be played at Park Hotel Diament Wrocław with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. The wider festival also includes the Wrocław Dwarf children’s tournament, an open blitz competition, beginner events, and additional educational and networking activities.
