The Romania Grand Prix is a major international chess circuit organized by the Federația Română de Șah (Romanian Chess Federation). The series brings together leading Romanian players, international Grandmasters, International Masters, juniors, and ambitious amateur competitors at high-level open tournaments held across Romania. The Grand Prix combines strong competitive chess with professional tournament organization and international exposure. Classical and rapid events are staged in major Romanian cities, while games from the circuit are broadcast through the Romanian Chess Federation’s official digital channels. The competition is designed both to attract established players and to give Romanian competitors opportunities to face strong international opposition and, in classical events, pursue international title norms. The circuit operates under the authority of the Romanian Chess Federation, Romania’s national governing body for chess. Founded in 1925, the federation manages national championships, leagues, junior and youth programs, national teams, tournament regulations, arbiters, coaches, player registration, and Romania’s participation in major international chess competitions. Alin Câmpeanu, a member of the Federation’s Board of Directors, International Arbiter, coach, organizer, and club president, serves as Director of the Romania Grand Prix.

🏆 Romania Grand Prix 2026

The 2026 Romania Grand Prix is the fifth edition of the circuit. It consists of five international open tournaments: two classical events and three rapid events, staged in Bucharest, Brașov, Alba Iulia, Arad, and Craiova. The 2026 series offers a total prize fund of €150,000 and is supported by the Romanian Chess Federation together with its partners. Players earn Grand Prix points throughout the season, with their best results contributing to the final circuit standings. The series includes the Bucharest Grand Prix Rapid, Brașov Grand Prix Classic, Alba Grand Prix Rapid, Arad Grand Prix Classic, and Craiova Grand Prix Rapid. These tournaments have attracted substantial international fields and form an important part of Romania’s growing presence on the European chess circuit.

📜 History and Development

The Romania Grand Prix developed into one of the Romanian Chess Federation’s flagship international projects after its launch in 2022. Since then, the circuit has expanded across several Romanian cities and has combined major prize funds, strong international participation, live coverage, and opportunities for Romanian players to compete regularly against titled opposition. The project forms part of the federation’s broader strategy to strengthen Romania as an international chess destination. Alongside the Grand Prix, FRȘah organizes national championships, junior competitions, team leagues, educational chess programs, and other international events.
