Šachový klub Skalica (ŠK Skalica) is a chess club based in Skalica, western Slovakia, near the Czech border. The club traces its local chess tradition to 1956 and today combines regular club activity, team competition, youth training, and tournament organization. Its playing and training base is on Sasinkova Street in Skalica, where the club runs sessions for children and other players during the week. ŠK Skalica competes throughout the Slovak league structure and organizes classical, rapid, blitz, and youth tournaments. Its calendar ranges from community events and junior competitions to FIDE-rated opens. During the 2025–2026 season, the club fielded several league teams, with its leading team finishing second in 3. liga A2. Youth development also remains an active priority, with regular training and local tournament opportunities for younger players. Milan Roman is the current Chairman of Šachový klub Skalica and its principal public contact. He is also an International Organizer and currently serves as President of the Slovak Chess Federation. Roman directs the club’s flagship Chess Slovak Open festival, which is currently taking place in Skalica from August 22–30, 2026 and features seven tournament formats, a €15,000 total prize fund, and a strong international Masters field.

📜 Chess Tradition and Club Development

ŠK Skalica presents its chess tradition as dating back to 1956. Over the decades, organized chess in the city has developed from local club competition into a program that now includes several league teams, junior training, public tournaments, and international events. Today, the club maintains its official seat at Krížna 5 while regular matches and training activities take place at its clubroom on Sasinkova 24. The club’s current training schedule includes sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays. Its relationship with the City of Skalica is also important. Municipal support is visible in several of the club’s tournaments, particularly the Chess Slovak Open festival and community events staged around the city.

♜ Team Chess and Player Development

ŠK Skalica fielded multiple teams during the 2025–2026 Slovak league season. Its first team competed in 3. liga A2 and finished an excellent second among 12 teams, scoring 24 match points and 54.5 individual game points. The club’s B team competed in 4. liga A21, while ŠK Skalica C and ŠK Skalica D played in 5. liga A21. This multi-team structure gives players of different strengths opportunities to gain regular league experience. Youth chess is another important part of the club’s work. ŠK Skalica runs regular training sessions for children and organizes youth tournaments, including events connected with the Slovak junior Grand Prix structure. The club also has strong individual competitors. WIM Alena Mrvová, representing ŠK Skalica, won the 2026 Slovak Women’s Blitz Championship in Prešov and finished eighth overall in a 114-player field.

🏆 Tournament Activity

ŠK Skalica organizes tournaments throughout the year rather than focusing exclusively on its summer festival. The Trojkráľový zimný turnaj 2026 opened the year with seven rounds of classical chess. Jozef Benci won the event with 5.5/7 in a field of 30 players. The club introduced the Trdelník Open in June 2026. The inaugural edition ran from June 26–29 and was a seven-round FIDE-rated classical tournament with a €1,100 prize fund. Šimon Šalgovič won on tiebreak after scoring 6/7, while 23 players from Slovakia, Hungary, Czechia, and Argentina participated. ŠK Skalica also organizes rapid, blitz, Christmas, and youth events. Therefore, local players have access to competitive chess throughout the year rather than only during the main summer festival.

🌍 Chess Slovak Open 2026

The club’s flagship project is the Chess Slovak Open, now in its eighth edition. The 2026 festival is currently taking place from August 22–30 at Dom kultúry Skalica and carries a €15,000 total prize fund. The festival comprises seven competitions and activities, including Masters, Queen Masters, Open A, Open B – Kvarteto Cup, Blitz, Rapid, and Chess960. The classical Open sections use nine rounds, while the closed Masters competitions also use nine-round round-robin formats. The 2026 Masters field has an average rating of approximately 2600 and includes GMs Alexander Donchenko, Leon Luke Mendonca, Abhimanyu Mishra, David Navara, Ihor Samunenkov, Anton Korobov, Daniel Dardha, Aditya Mittal, Alexandr Fier, and Jerguš Pecháč. The tournament is designed to support GM and IM norms, while the separate Queen Masters competition offers opportunities for WGM and WIM norms. IO Milan Roman serves as Tournament Director, while IA Rastislav Diviak is Chief Arbiter. The festival combines high-level international chess with open sections accessible to strong club players and additional rapid and blitz competition.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Milan Roman is Chairman of Šachový klub Skalica and leads its major tournament projects. In addition to his club role, he is President of the Slovak Chess Federation, giving him significant experience in both local and national chess administration. Roman is also recognized as an International Organizer and serves as Tournament Director of the Chess Slovak Open. His work with ŠK Skalica has helped expand the club’s tournament program from local competition into an international festival that attracts titled players from several continents.
