The Federació Catalana d’Escacs, commonly known as the FCE, is the governing organization for federated chess in Catalonia, Spain. It coordinates clubs, licensed players, competitions, arbiters, trainers, schools, and development programs throughout the region.

The federation was constituted on August 2, 1925, to organize, promote, and direct chess activity in Catalonia. In 2025, it celebrated its 100th anniversary with tournaments, public activities, exhibitions, institutional events, and a centenary gala in Barcelona.

FCE operates from its headquarters at the historic Fabra i Coats complex in Barcelona. Its territorial structure covers Barcelona, Central Catalonia, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. Therefore, the federation can coordinate regional competitions while maintaining one unified Catalan chess system.

Ramon Chalmeta i Ugas has served as president since May 2025. He works with a board responsible for sporting competition, territorial coordination, institutional relations, finance, youth chess, technology, regulations, equality, social chess, and school programs. The professional structure also includes federation management, technical personnel, committees, arbiters, and territorial delegates.

🏆 Competitions and Tournament Structure

Federació Catalana d’Escacs manages an extensive program of classical, rapid, blitz, individual, team, youth, women’s, senior, and school competitions. Its official calendar combines federation championships with tournaments organized by affiliated clubs throughout Catalonia.

The Lliga Catalana is the central team competition. Clubs compete across several divisions, from local and territorial groups to the highest Catalan category. The federation also administers the Copa Catalana, team blitz championships, mixed-pairs events, and other official team competitions.

Individual events include the Catalan Absolute Championship, Catalan Women’s Championship, Veterans Championship, age-group championships, and territorial qualifying competitions. In addition, the federation organizes or supports rapid, blitz, online, school, and inclusive chess events.

The Circuit Català d’Oberts Internacionals d’Escacs is one of the federation’s most important international projects. Its 2026 edition includes 27 confirmed tournaments between May and September, with nine classical events and eighteen rapid competitions. The circuit brings together organizers across Catalonia and attracts players from Spain and abroad.

FCE also supports major events connected with Barcelona, including the Sants–City of Barcelona International Chess Open. Moreover, it publishes tournament regulations, official calendars, circulars, pairings, results, rating information, live games, broadcasts, and historical competition records.

Through its territorial delegations, the federation connects local club tournaments with Catalan championships and wider Spanish competition. This structure gives developing players and experienced competitors regular opportunities to play throughout the year.

🎓 Youth Development, Education and Inclusive Chess

Youth development is one of the federation’s principal responsibilities. Its Escacs Base program covers individual and team championships, territorial qualifying stages, development groups, training sessions, and representation at Spanish age-group events.

Young players can progress from school or club chess into official Catalan championships. Leading juniors may then join advanced training programs or represent Catalonia at national competitions. The federation works with coaches, clubs, families, and territorial organizers to support this pathway.

FCE also promotes chess as an educational tool. Its school programs provide teaching resources, competitions, online leagues, and activities for educational institutions. In addition, the federation supports conferences and professional exchanges involving teachers, chess instructors, researchers, and school administrators.

The federation trains and supports arbiters, instructors, coaches, and technical staff. Courses cover tournament regulations, arbitration, coaching, live-game transmission, and other practical areas required for organized chess.

Women’s chess and equality form another important part of the federation’s current work. FCE organizes women’s championships, mixed-pairs events, development activities, and public initiatives designed to increase the participation and visibility of girls and women.

In 2026, the federation introduced the FCE Equality Distinction for affiliated clubs. The program recognizes organizations that promote gender equality and provide safe, inclusive sporting environments.

FCE also supports social chess, accessible participation, online competition, club development, and public chess activities. Through these programs, the federation combines competitive administration with education, inclusion, technology, and community development.
