Federació Catalana d’Escacs (FCE) is the governing body for organized chess in Catalonia, Spain. Founded on August 2, 1925, the federation coordinates competitive chess across Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, Tarragona, and Central Catalonia. Its responsibilities include the Catalan Chess League, individual and team championships, youth competitions, rapid and blitz events, rating administration, arbiters and coaches, international open tournaments, school chess, social chess initiatives, and support for affiliated clubs. The FCE oversees one of Spain’s largest regional chess structures. Its calendar ranges from the Lliga Catalana and Copa Catalana to age-group championships, women’s chess, veterans’ competitions, territorial championships, and a large international summer tournament circuit. The federation also works beyond conventional competition through Escacs a l’Escola, chess-development programs for young players, equality initiatives, online chess and broadcasting, and social projects designed to introduce chess to new communities. Ramon Chalmeta i Ugas is the current President of the Federació Catalana d’Escacs. The current executive team also includes Sporting Vice President Ivan Marina i de la Torre, Institutional Vice President Teresa Muñoz i Muñoz, Treasurer Montse Gràcia i Escarp, and General Secretary David Ayza i León, who is also responsible for youth chess. In 2026, the FCE is managing a particularly extensive calendar that includes the Catalan League, Catalan youth championships, territorial competitions, and the 22nd Circuit Català d’Oberts Internacionals d’Escacs.

📜 A Century of Catalan Chess

The Federació Catalana d’Escacs was formally established on August 2, 1925 to organize, promote, and coordinate chess throughout Catalonia. Over the following century, it developed a broad network connecting clubs, players, arbiters, trainers, schools, and tournament organizers. The federation celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2025. The centenary program culminated in a major gathering at the historic Drassanes Reials in Barcelona, where more than 500 members of the Catalan chess community attended a gala celebrating a century of organized chess. The anniversary also highlighted the federation’s role in many important chapters of Catalan chess history, including major international tournaments, the development of a strong club network, youth competition, and the expansion of chess into schools and community programs.

♜ Lliga Catalana and Team Chess

The Lliga Catalana is one of the central competitions administered by the FCE. Clubs from throughout Catalonia compete across a multi-level league structure headed by the Divisió d’Honor. For the 2026 season, the top division returned to a 16-team format. Division of Honour matches were played on Saturdays from January through March, followed by the final round in April. Other categories played primarily on Sunday mornings, with Catalan finals and promotion stages continuing afterward. Games across the league use a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The federation also broadcasts selected Division of Honour matches through its digital platforms, allowing followers to watch leading Catalan clubs and players online. The FCE additionally organizes the Copa Catalana, team blitz championships, territorial team competitions, and youth team events, creating competitive pathways from developing local clubs to the highest level of Catalan team chess.

🎓 Youth Chess and Escacs a l’Escola

Youth development is another major responsibility of the federation. The FCE organizes the Campionat de Catalunya Individual per Edats, team youth championships, territorial qualification events, rapid competitions, and programs supporting Catalan players who compete at Spanish and international youth championships. The 2026 Catalan Individual Youth Championship was held in Lloret de Mar from March 28 to April 2, bringing together players across multiple age categories. Meanwhile, the long-running Escacs a l’Escola program uses chess as an educational tool in Catalan schools. In 2026, almost 900 students took part in regional gatherings connected with the program. The federation also provides training opportunities for teachers interested in introducing chess into the classroom. These initiatives complement the work of affiliated clubs and help create a continuous pathway from school chess to federation competition.

🌍 Circuit Català d’Oberts Internacionals 2026

One of the FCE’s most important international projects is the Circuit Català d’Oberts Internacionals d’Escacs, a summer series connecting major open tournaments held throughout Catalonia. The 22nd edition runs from May 1 to September 13, 2026 and consists of 27 confirmed tournaments: nine classical events and 18 rapid competitions. The circuit includes long-established tournaments in locations such as Barcelona, Sitges, Badalona, Sant Martí, Sants, Vallfogona, and other Catalan chess centers. International players can accumulate points across participating tournaments toward the overall circuit standings and rating-category classifications. The 2026 program includes additional prize support from the Generalitat de Catalunya. Therefore, the circuit functions not simply as a collection of independent opens but as a coordinated international tournament season promoted by the federation and local organizing clubs.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Ramon Chalmeta i Ugas serves as President of the Federació Catalana d’Escacs. Ivan Marina i de la Torre is Sporting Vice President and coordinates the territorial delegations, while Teresa Muñoz i Muñoz serves as Institutional Vice President. David Ayza i León is General Secretary and also oversees youth chess. For practical federation correspondence, he is one of the principal senior officials within the current organizational structure. Cristina Bosch i Porta serves as General Manager, while José Sequera Paolini directs the federation’s youth chess program. The FCE also maintains territorial representation in Barcelona, Central Catalonia, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona, enabling the federation to administer competitions and development programs throughout Catalonia.
