Escola Xadrez Pontevedra (EXP) is a chess club, training organization, and tournament organizer based in Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain. Founded in December 2001, it was created to promote chess throughout the city and has developed into a broad organization covering federated competition, player training, youth development, international tournaments, and community projects. EXP is independent of the University of Vigo, although the two organizations maintain a long-standing collaboration that connects chess with the university community and the Pontevedra campus. The club operates training programs for beginners, improving players, and advanced competitors, both in person and online. It also manages an exceptionally large federated structure, organizes events such as PonteXadrez, Xadrez Na Rúa, the Memorial Ramón Escudeiro Tilve, and the Torneo Internacional Ciudad de Pontevedra, and runs its annual Campus Internacional Ramón Escudeiro Tilve. In addition, EXP maintains the social project Xadrez: Estratexia pola Paz / Chess Strategy for Peace, which uses chess as an educational and social tool. IM Daniel Rivera is identified by the club as its President and Founder, while IM Pablo García Castro serves as Manager and is the principal operational contact for major competitions. García is also a FIDE Trainer and International Organizer and directs the Ciudad de Pontevedra tournament. The club had another highly active season in 2026: its first team finished runner-up in Galicia’s División de Honra, its extensive league structure covered almost every regional category, and the XIV Torneo Internacional Ciudad de Pontevedra took place from July 24–30, 2026.

📜 History and Development

Escola Xadrez Pontevedra began on December 1, 2001, with the objective of expanding access to chess in Pontevedra. Over the following two decades, its work expanded from chess instruction into competitive teams, major events, university cooperation, and social initiatives. A defining part of this development has been the relationship with the University of Vigo. EXP remains an independent organization, but the partnership allows it to promote chess among university students and the wider communities around the Pontevedra and Vigo campuses. The collaboration includes federated chess, university teams, beginner and advanced schools, and tournament organization. Consequently, EXP combines the characteristics of a traditional chess club with those of a large training and event-management organization.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Activity

EXP has built one of the largest team structures in Galician chess. In the 2026 Liga Galega de Xadrez, the organization again registered 20 teams across the regional system, including teams in División de Honra, Preferente, Primera, Tercera, and Cuarta División. Its principal team competes under the name Xadrez: Estratexia pola Paz. During the 2026 División de Honra season, the team remained in contention for the Galician title until the final round. The season ended with Xadrez: Estratexia pola Paz as Galician runner-up, scoring 42.5 board points behind champion Xadrez Ourense. Meanwhile, EXP-Zona Informática won its Tercera División group and earned promotion to Segunda División.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

Developing young players is a central part of the Escola’s work. EXP operates introductory, improvement, and advanced chess programs while creating a progression route from training into official Galician competition. The scale of its team structure also gives younger players opportunities to gain federated experience. The lower divisions regularly include developing juniors, while the strongest prospects can progress through the club’s higher-level teams. Another major program is the Campus Internacional Ramón Escudeiro Tilve. Its 14th edition ran from July 17–31, 2026 in Pontevedra and combined chess training, sports development, international interaction, and recreational activities for young participants.

🌟 Torneo Internacional Ciudad de Pontevedra

The Torneo Internacional Ciudad de Pontevedra is EXP’s flagship international competition and one of the largest recurring chess events in Galicia. The XIV edition took place from July 24–30, 2026 at the University Sports Pavilion in Pontevedra. Players competed over nine rounds with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The tournament was divided into a Masters group, where international title norms were available, and an Amateur group for developing players. The 2026 edition attracted competitors representing 22 countries and offered more than €13,000 in prizes. IM Muthaiah AL of India won the Masters tournament after defeating GM Sayantan Das in the decisive final round. The event also produced several international-title achievements. Meanwhile, Ricardo Oubiña Pazos won the Amateur tournament with 8/9. Pablo García Castro served as Tournament Director. The event received institutional support from the Concello de Pontevedra, while the University of Vigo continued its long-standing cooperation with EXP.

🤝 Social and Community Chess

EXP also uses chess beyond formal competition. Its Chess Strategy for Peace project began in cooperation with Syrian refugees and developed chess-based educational activities in refugee camps in Jordan. The project has included the delivery of chess materials, lessons, instructor training, and continued educational support. Moreover, it illustrates the club’s broader view of chess as an educational and social-development tool. Closer to home, EXP organizes public and school activities such as PonteXadrez, Xadrez Na Rúa, exhibitions, training courses, and community tournaments. As a result, its work ranges from beginner instruction and social chess to Galicia’s highest team division and international FIDE-rated competition.
