♟️ About Ugra Chess Federation

The Ugra Chess Federation (Chess Federation of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Ugra) is the regional governing body for chess in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Ugra, Russia. Established in 2006 and based in Khanty-Mansiysk, the federation coordinates regional championships, youth competition, mass-participation events, coach and arbiter development, and the participation of Ugra players in Russian and international tournaments. It works closely with the Chess Federation of Russia, the Ugra Department of Physical Culture and Sports, municipal chess federations, and the Ugra Chess Academy. The federation operates across a region with a particularly strong chess tradition. Its calendar covers Ugra championships in classical, rapid, and blitz chess, veterans events, school competitions, qualification tournaments, the Northern League, the Ugra Cup for young players, and high-level international competitions. Khanty-Mansiysk has also hosted some of world chess’s most important events, including the 2010 Chess Olympiad, multiple FIDE World Cups, World Team Championships, and, more recently, the Asian Chess Club Champions League 2025. The Ugra Chess Academy provides the principal venue for many of these competitions. Vasily Filipenko remains the President of the Ugra Chess Federation in 2026, while Natalia Bondareva serves as Executive Director and is an important operational figure in regional tournament activity. The federation is currently involved in implementing Ugra’s new Chess Development Concept through 2030, adopted in February 2026. Its 2026 program has already included the XXIII Anatoly Karpov International Tournament, the Northern League, regional youth and veterans competitions, arbiter education, and an extensive development program involving schools and municipalities across the autonomous okrug.

🏛️ Regional Chess Development

The Ugra Chess Federation plays a coordinating role across the autonomous okrug rather than operating as a single chess club. It works with municipal federations, sports schools, educational institutions, coaches, and local tournament organizers throughout the region. In February 2026, the Government of Ugra approved a formal Chess Development Concept for the period through 2030. The federation is one of the principal organizations involved in its implementation alongside the regional sports and education departments and the Ugra Chess Academy. The program includes a unified regional chess curriculum, additional training for coaches and teachers, support for talented juniors, expanded school chess, methodological seminars, and greater cooperation between municipalities. Agreements connected with the strategy are being developed across all 22 municipalities of Ugra.

🎓 Youth Chess and Education

Youth development is one of the federation’s central responsibilities. Its annual program includes regional championships across multiple age categories, qualification competitions, school events, and participation in national Russian tournaments. The federation also supports the regional stage of Belaya Ladya (White Rook), Russia’s major school team competition. The strongest school team represents Ugra at the national stage. Another recurring project is the Ugra Cup, a major competition for boys and girls in several age categories. The event brings together young players from different regions and combines competitive development with opportunities to gain national ratings and experience in large tournaments. The 2026 development plan also places greater emphasis on coach education. It includes professional retraining, qualification courses, seminars, masterclasses, and a regional system for identifying and supporting talented young chess players.

🌟 Anatoly Karpov International Tournament

The Anatoly Karpov International Chess Tournament is one of Ugra’s most important elite events. Originally associated with Poikovsky, the tournament moved to the Ugra Chess Academy in Khanty-Mansiysk and continues to attract strong international grandmasters. The 23rd edition took place from April 10–16, 2026. Ten grandmasters representing Belarus, Hungary, Armenia, India, Uzbekistan, China, and Russia competed in a nine-round round-robin tournament. The event used a faster classical format and formed part of the FIDE Circuit 2026–2027. Its total prize fund was close to RUB 12 million. GM Denis Lazavik of Belarus won the tournament with 6/9. Hungarian GM Benjamin Gledura finished second with 5.5 points, while Armenian GM Aram Hakobyan took third place with five points.

🌍 International Tournament Tradition

Few regional chess federations have hosted as many elite international events as Ugra. Khanty-Mansiysk staged the 39th Chess Olympiad in 2010 and later hosted multiple editions of the FIDE World Cup, including the 2019 event. The region has also hosted World Team Championships and other major FIDE competitions. More recently, the Ugra Chess Federation helped organize the Asian Chess Club Champions League 2025, the first edition of that competition staged in Russia after the Chess Federation of Russia joined the Asian Chess Federation. This international activity operates alongside the federation’s regional program. Consequently, Ugra combines elite tournament organization with grassroots competition, junior development, and chess education across a geographically large region.

🏆 2026 Regional Competition

The federation’s 2026 calendar includes numerous competitions throughout Ugra. In January, it helped stage the XI Diocesan Christmas Rapid Tournament in Khanty-Mansiysk. The spring program included regional rapid tournaments, veterans championships, qualification events, and the Northern League. The May 2026 Northern League in Fedorovsky attracted 139 players from eight municipalities, demonstrating the federation’s reach beyond Khanty-Mansiysk. The federation also organized an online arbiter seminar in March 2026 led by International Arbiter Evgeny Somkin, while additional educational and tournament projects are scheduled throughout the remainder of the year.
