♟️ About Academia de Xadrez da Maia

Academia de Xadrez da Maia (AXM), internationally presented as Maia Chess Academy, is a chess academy and tournament organizer based in Pedrouços, Maia, Portugal. Founded in September 2014, AXM was created around three connected areas: chess education, player development, and tournament organization. Its technical team consists of experienced chess instructors, while the organization works closely with the Maia City Council and within the Portuguese Chess Federation system. AXM provides chess opportunities for children, young people, and adults. Its activities have included regular lessons, school and municipal chess programs, youth competitions, camps, rapid and blitz events, and FIDE-rated classical tournaments. Over time, the academy has developed a pathway from introductory chess through competitive national and international play. Moreover, it has introduced initiatives focused on women and girls and has incorporated masterclasses and educational activities into its major festival program. Duarte Duarte is one of the current Tournament Directors of the 2026 Maia Chess Open and is therefore an appropriate primary public contact for AXM’s principal international tournament activity. As of August 27, 2026, the Maia International Chess Festival 2026 is currently taking place at TECMAIA. Its program includes the Maia Chess Open Masters and U2000 sections, Maia Rapid Cup, Douro Blitz Cruise, Queens Maia Blitz, Streamers Maia Blitz, team competition, and other chess activities.

📜 History and Development

Academia de Xadrez da Maia began operating in September 2014. Maia municipal records describe the project as an organization dedicated from its foundation to chess teaching, training, and the creation of chess events. Only a few months after its establishment, AXM organized the I Open Jovem Cidade da Maia in December 2014 with support from the Maia City Council. The tournament placed young players alongside major national chess competitions and demonstrated the academy’s early combination of education and organized competition. The partnership with the municipality subsequently expanded. AXM delivered chess programs through youth centers, municipal facilities, libraries, and other educational spaces in Maia. By 2019, the organization was celebrating five years of activity in chess education and tournament organization.

🎓 Chess Education and Community Development

Teaching remains a core part of AXM’s identity. The academy has offered instruction for beginners as well as players seeking to improve their tournament performance. Its programs cover both children and adults and combine formal instruction with practical chess. AXM has worked with Maia’s municipal youth infrastructure to extend chess beyond a single clubroom. Its activities have included classes at youth centers and libraries, open practice sessions, school-oriented competitions, and programs designed to develop concentration, logical reasoning, responsibility, and sporting behavior through chess. The academy also integrates education into its international festival. Recent editions have included Summer Chess Camp activities, masterclasses, lectures, and other learning opportunities, allowing younger players to combine training with tournament participation.

🏆 Maia International Chess Festival

The Maia International Chess Festival is AXM’s flagship tournament project. Recent editions have transformed the Maia Chess Open into a broader festival combining classical, rapid, blitz, team, educational, and social chess activities. The 2026 festival runs from August 20–29 at TECMAIA in Maia. Its main classical competition, the Maia Chess Open, takes place from August 21–29 and consists of two nine-round Swiss tournaments: Maia Masters and U2000. The Masters section is primarily intended for players rated 2000 and above, while the U2000 tournament gives lower-rated competitors a separate competitive field. Both competitions are submitted for FIDE rating and use a classical time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder, with a 30-second increment from move one. The current Masters field includes Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, strong juniors, and international competitors from numerous federations. AXM organizes the tournament with support from the Maia City Council.

⚡ Rapid, Blitz and Festival Events

AXM has deliberately developed the Maia festival beyond its classical Open. The Maia Rapid Cup 2026, held on August 25, used seven rounds and was submitted for both Portuguese and FIDE Rapid rating. Another distinctive event is the Douro Blitz Cruise, which combines a FIDE-rated blitz tournament with a cruise on the Douro River. The festival program also includes the Queens Maia Blitz, Streamers Maia Blitz, and Maia Team Cup. These formats give participants opportunities to play several forms of rated chess during the same visit. Consequently, Maia has developed into a full chess-festival program rather than a standalone nine-round Open.
