♟️ About the Latvian Chess Federation

The Latvian Chess Federation, officially known as Latvijas Šaha federācija, is the national governing body for chess in Latvia. Founded on April 13, 1924, the federation has played a central role in the country’s chess development for more than a century. It represents Latvia within the International Chess Federation and the European Chess Union. Moreover, it coordinates the national system for players, clubs, tournament organizers, arbiters, trainers, and official competitions. The federation maintains its headquarters in central Riga and manages player licensing, national regulations, ratings, tournament registration, and communication across the Latvian chess community. Toms Kalniņš has served as chairperson of the federation’s board since May 2025.

🏆 National Championships and Player Development

The Latvian Chess Federation oversees a broad program of classical, rapid, and blitz competition. Its principal events include the Latvian Individual Championships, women’s competitions, national youth championships, team leagues, qualification tournaments, and age-group events. In addition, the federation supports FIDE-rated tournaments organized by clubs, municipalities, schools, and regional chess organizations throughout Latvia. Players must maintain an active national licence to participate in competitions covered by the federation’s licensing system. The federation also develops arbiters, organizers, trainers, and other chess officials. Therefore, Latvian players can progress from introductory and school chess to national championships and international representation within one structured system.

🌍 Latvian Chess and International Competition

Latvia has a distinguished chess tradition associated with World Champion Mikhail Tal and many other internationally recognized players. The Latvian Chess Federation preserves this heritage while supporting a modern tournament program in Riga, Jūrmala, Liepāja, Daugavpils, and other cities. It selects and coordinates national delegations for Chess Olympiads, European championships, youth events, senior competitions, and other international tournaments. Furthermore, the federation cooperates with FIDE, the European Chess Union, neighboring Baltic federations, local organizers, and public institutions. In 2024, the federation celebrated its centenary with a special 100-board team competition involving Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and an international FIDE team. Through national championships, international cooperation, youth development, and organized club chess, the Latvian Chess Federation continues to strengthen Latvia’s position within European and world chess.
