The Bardejovské Kúpele FIDE Open 2027 takes place from January 2–5, 2027, at the four-star Hotel Alexander in Bardejovské Kúpele, Slovakia. The tournament is organized by ŠK BLS Bardejov together with Bardejovské Kúpele a.s., the City of Bardejov and PKŠZ. Its seven-round classical competition offers players an opportunity to start the year with internationally rated chess in eastern Slovakia’s historic spa district.

Competitors play the Swiss system with 90 minutes per player plus a 30-second increment for every move. Results count toward both FIDE Standard and the Slovak national rating list. Moreover, the official 2027 regulations announce a €2,400 prize allocation (approximately US$2,680), including six overall prizes and special awards for juniors, women, seniors and rating categories. The overall winner receives €500, while the organizers plan to broadcast games from 30 boards.

The event combines a four-day chess schedule with hotel accommodation and wellness facilities in Bardejovské Kúpele. Round 1 begins at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 2, following morning registration at the playing hotel. In addition, the organizer provides an online application form and reduced entry fees for qualifying players who register and pay by November 30, 2026. The program ends with the awards ceremony on January 5.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The Open uses a seven-round Swiss system under the FIDE Laws of Chess. Each player receives 90 minutes for the game, and the clock adds 30 seconds after every completed move. Therefore, the competition provides the longer time allocation associated with classical chess. Players must manage their clocks over two-game days and follow the pairings that the arbiter team publishes before each round.

The tournament counts for both international FIDE Standard ratings and Slovakia’s national rating list. In addition, Chess-Results identifies Adrián Knap as tournament director, Mgr. Ivan Dzuriš as chief arbiter, and Marián Jura and Adrián Knap as additional tournament arbiters. The player list and round schedule are available online through the official tournament record.

Playing Condition Official Rule
Pairing system Seven-round Swiss
Thinking time 90 minutes per player for the game
Increment 30 seconds per move
Ratings FIDE Standard and Slovak national Elo
Tournament director Adrián Knap
Chief arbiter Mgr. Ivan Dzuriš
Online transmission Games from 30 chessboards
Player registration January 2, 8:15–9:30 AM, Hotel Alexander

How Swiss Pairings Work

Unlike a round-robin event, the Swiss system does not require every participant to meet all the others. Instead, opponents change from round to round in line with the pairing rules and previous scores. Consequently, each player’s results influence their upcoming opponents. Participants should consult the tournament’s Chess-Results page and the on-site noticeboard for the current pairings.

International Rating

The organizer will submit the classical results for FIDE Standard rating calculation. Slovak federation members must also pay their membership fees for the relevant season under the official regulations. Moreover, players representing other federations should ensure their FIDE registration information is accurate before the event. The tournament’s national and international rating status is independently listed on Chess-Results.

🏆 Prize Fund

The 2027 regulations announce a total prize allocation of €2,400, approximately US$2,680. Six cash prizes in the unrestricted Open account for €1,300. The remaining €1,100 represents listed category prizes, including the junior, senior, women’s and rating awards. In particular, the overall winner earns €500, followed by €300 for second and €200 for third.

The approximate USD conversions use the European Central Bank reference rate for October 30, 2026, of €1 = US$1.1172. However, the organizer awards prizes in euros, so the displayed USD amounts are illustrations rather than guaranteed payment values. Furthermore, cash prizes cannot be combined: a player who qualifies for more than one award cannot collect multiple prizes under the stated rules.

Open Overall Standing Cash Prize
1st €500 (≈ US$560)
2nd €300 (≈ US$340)
3rd €200 (≈ US$220)
4th €150 (≈ US$170)
5th €100 (≈ US$110)
6th €50 (≈ US$60)
Open subtotal €1,300 (≈ US$1,450)

Special Category Awards

Five categories offer identical three-place award structures of €100, €60 and €40. A separate Elo 1000 category awards €50, €30 and €20. Thus, the six category ladders together account for €1,100 of the published nominal fund. The junior category is for players born in 2008 or later, while the S62 senior prize category is for those born in 1964 or earlier.

Prize Category 1st / 2nd / 3rd (EUR)
Juniors — born in 2008 or later €100 / €60 / €40
S62 — born in 1964 or earlier €100 / €60 / €40
Women €100 / €60 / €40
FIDE Elo below 1800 €100 / €60 / €40
FIDE Elo 1801–2000 €100 / €60 / €40
Elo 1000 €50 / €30 / €20
Category subtotal €1,100

These category awards depend on the number of eligible competitors. Specifically, the organizer guarantees the full junior, senior, women’s and rating-group prize ladder when at least ten players meet that category’s participation condition. If the threshold is not met, the published rule provides only a €50 winner’s award instead of the full category distribution. As a result, the €2,400 figure represents the advertised allocation, while the final payouts depend on applicable conditions.

♟️ Sections / Groups

The tournament operates as a single seven-round FIDE Open, rather than several different Swiss groups with separate pairings. All participants compete in the overall standings. However, the prize chart also recognizes age, gender and rating categories. Therefore, players should not confuse these additional award classifications with separate competitions or additional games.

Classification Participation / Award
Main Open All entrants compete together in the seven-round Swiss
Junior prize Players born in 2008 or later
Senior S62 prize Players born in 1964 or earlier
Women’s prize Separate women’s podium
Elo below 1800 Separate rating-category podium
Elo 1801–2000 Separate rating-category podium
Elo 1000 Separate three-place award structure

Junior and Senior Participation

The published junior prize category covers competitors born in 2008 or later, which allows many teenage and younger players to compete for an additional classification. Meanwhile, the S62 awards reward players born in 1964 or earlier. The reduced entry-fee age cutoff for seniors is different, applying to participants born in 1963 or earlier; consequently, eligibility for a prize and eligibility for a fee discount should not be treated as identical.

Rating-Based Recognition

The Elo award classifications give lower-rated and intermediate players a chance to compete for a placing beyond the unrestricted top six. Nevertheless, the non-cumulative prize rule still applies when someone places in both lists. The organizer determines the actual awards based on the published eligibility criteria and final results.

📅 Schedule

The Open starts on Saturday, January 2, 2027. Participants check in at Hotel Alexander from 8:15 to 9:30 AM, followed by the opening ceremony from 9:30 to 9:45 AM. Round 1 begins at 10:00 AM. In addition, the event has three double-round days: January 2, January 4 and January 5. All times follow Central European Time (CET, UTC+1).

Date & Local Time (CET) Activity
Sat, Jan 2 · 8:15–9:30 AM Participant registration
Sat, Jan 2 · 9:30–9:45 AM Opening ceremony
Sat, Jan 2 · 10:00 AM Round 1
Sat, Jan 2 · 3:00 PM Round 2
Sun, Jan 3 · 9:00 AM Round 3
Mon, Jan 4 · 9:00 AM Round 4
Mon, Jan 4 · 2:00 PM Round 5
Tue, Jan 5 · 9:00 AM Round 6
Tue, Jan 5 · 2:00 PM Round 7
Tue, Jan 5 · 6:00–7:00 PM Awards and closing

The single-round Sunday schedule provides a different pace from the double-round days. By contrast, Monday and Tuesday require players to prepare for games in both the morning and afternoon. The final round starts at 2:00 PM on January 5, followed by the announced closing ceremony from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Consequently, prize contenders should avoid arranging a return trip that conflicts with the award presentation.

📝 Registration

Participants may apply through the official online registration form published in the Slovak Chess Federation’s 2027 tournament regulations. The standard fee is €39 for players who register and pay by November 30, 2026. After that deadline, the standard fee rises to €49. Furthermore, juniors, women and qualifying seniors have a separate reduced-fee schedule.

Registration Category Entry Fee / Conditions
Standard fee, paid by Nov 30, 2026 €39
Standard fee after Nov 30, 2026 €49
Juniors born in 2008 or later, women, seniors born in 1963 or earlier — early €29
The same reduced groups — after Nov 30 €35
Accommodation discount 10% off the applicable entry fee for guests staying in Alexander, Ozón or Fontána
Early-fee cutoff Registration and payment by November 30, 2026
Online application Official entry form
Event contact marianjura@seznam.cz

The organizer offers a further 10% reduction on the entry fee for players staying in one of three designated spa hotels: Alexander, Ozón or Fontána. This accommodation discount appears separately from the age- and gender-based fees. Therefore, players who plan to use it should confirm their hotel arrangement with the event contact and calculate the final fee before making payment.

The discounted prices apply only when the organizer receives both the application and the applicable payment by November 30. Accordingly, that date is an early-payment cutoff, rather than a confirmed final entry deadline for the competition. The official brochure provides bank transfer instructions and asks players to include their name with the payment. For accuracy and security, entrants should follow the original brochure rather than copy account details from a third-party listing.

Registration Contact

Marián Jura is the main tournament contact. Players can reach him at marianjura@seznam.cz or +421 911 659 595. Additionally, entrants can review the Chess-Results starting list for their current status after processing. The event’s official registration form appears in the three-page 2027 regulations.

📍 Venue

Hotel Alexander, Bardejovské Kúpele, 086 31 Bardejov, Prešov Region, Slovakia. The official brochure identifies this four-star hotel as the playing venue for all seven rounds. It stands within the Bardejovské Kúpele spa resort, northeast of Bardejov’s historic center. Furthermore, the hotel’s own contact page provides precise building coordinates and the full resort postal address, so visitors should navigate to Hotel Alexander rather than to Bardejov city center.

Hotel Alexander provides guest accommodation, conference facilities, catering and wellness services. The hotel also connects to Hotel Ozón by an indoor corridor. As a result, participants staying at either property can access the facilities without arranging a daily road transfer for chess. Players should follow the tournament signage to the registration area and playing hall after arrival.

🏨 Accommodation

The 2027 invitation includes three official hotel options in the Bardejovské Kúpele spa resort. All advertised prices refer to one person per night in a double room and include buffet breakfast. Consequently, these figures should not be confused with the full price of a room or with a single-occupancy tariff. Players seeking a single room should request a separate quote from the organizer or hotel.

2027 Hotel Offer Price per Person / Night
Hotel Alexander (4-star) €66 including buffet breakfast
Hotel Ozón (3-star) €55 including buffet breakfast
Hotel Fontána (2-star) €47 including buffet breakfast

Wellness Benefits

Participants staying in Alexander, Ozón or Fontána enjoy unlimited access to Hotel Alexander’s wellness area and Ozón Spa under the festival’s accommodation offer. Meanwhile, players who do not stay in those hotels receive one complimentary entry to Ozón Spa during the competition. The organizer also advertises free parking near Hotel Alexander or the nearby Srdiečko buffet.

Refreshments and drinking water will be available for every player. Additionally, Hotel Alexander and Ozón offer optional buffet lunches and dinners for guests who prefer to remain in the spa area between games. The accommodation and wellness offer can be especially convenient on January 2, 4 and 5, when players have two classical rounds in one day.

🚆 How to Get There

From Bardejov by Bus

Bardejovské Kúpele lies approximately five kilometers from central Bardejov. Local urban transport connects the town with the spa district, including Bardejov city bus routes 1, 2 and 5. Therefore, participants arriving at Bardejov’s bus or train station can continue by local bus or taxi to the resort. Visitors should check the latest municipal schedule, especially for early morning arrivals and evening returns.

By Train

Bardejov railway station lies next to the town’s bus station, making onward travel within the region possible. Regional trains connect Bardejov with Prešov. However, the playing hotel is in the spa district rather than beside the station, so travelers will need a final bus or taxi transfer. The nearest larger rail interchange is in Prešov, while Bardejov serves the branch-line connection.

By Road and Air

Drivers should follow local directions to Bardejovské Kúpele and use the hotel name and postal code for their final navigation. In addition, the organizer lists free parking for tournament participants near the hotel. For international visitors, Košice International Airport (KSC) is a possible regional arrival airport; onward transport to Bardejov requires additional travel by road or public transportation.

ℹ️ Other Information

Online Games and Spectators

The organizer plans online game transmission from 30 chessboards, allowing chess followers to watch selected encounters outside the playing hall. Furthermore, the official Chess-Results tournament record includes the current participant list, event details and seven-round schedule. Players should use the organizer’s latest tournament information for pairings and results as the competition progresses.

Bardejovské Kúpele Spa Setting

The spa district combines medical and wellness facilities with parks and accommodation in a quiet part of eastern Slovakia. Bardejov itself is known for its preserved historic center, while the spa resort offers a different environment for a winter chess trip. Moreover, the published accommodation options make it practical to stay near the playing venue and enjoy the resort between rounds.

Prize and Registration Conditions

The organizer’s €2,400 prize allocation includes several category ladders with minimum participation thresholds, so not all amounts necessarily become payable exactly as advertised. In addition, an individual player cannot collect more than one cash prize. The official Slovak regulations remain the definitive document for entry fees, prizes, accommodation benefits and any changes the organizing committee announces before January 2027.

About Šachový klub BLS Bardejov

Šachový klub BLS Bardejov (ŠK BLS Bardejov) is a Slovak chess club based in Bardejov, a historic town in the Prešov Region of northeastern Slovakia. Established in 2007, the club focuses on competitive chess, junior development, school chess education, and the organization of rated tournaments. Its activities bring together children, experienced players, coaches, and chess enthusiasts from Bardejov and the surrounding region.

The club has grown into an active organization with more than 100 members, according to its official website. Under the leadership of Marián Jura, ŠK BLS Bardejov combines regular training with participation in regional chess leagues, youth competitions, and international open tournaments. Its programs include individual coaching, chess instruction in schools and kindergartens, and events that give young players practical tournament experience.

One of the club's main international projects is the Bardejovské Kúpele FIDE Open, held at the renowned Bardejovské Kúpele spa resort. Through cooperation with the City of Bardejov, regional chess organizations, and local partners, the club helps connect competitive chess with the area's cultural and sporting traditions.

History & Development

Šachový klub BLS Bardejov was founded in 2007 and became part of an established chess community with roots extending back several decades. Organized club chess in Bardejov dates to 1975, while the city's international chess history reaches back to a tournament held at Bardejovské Kúpele in July 1926. That historic competition took place long before the establishment of ŠK BLS Bardejov, but it remains an important milestone in the region's chess heritage.

The club developed its activities around teaching chess to young people, providing tournament opportunities, and building a community of players who share an interest in the game. Its development has included school partnerships, participation in regional competitions, and regular chess events for players with different levels of experience.

In 2025 and 2026, the Bardejov chess community celebrated 50 years of organized club chess and the centenary of the historic 1926 international tournament. ŠK BLS Bardejov participated in these commemorative activities through competitions at Bardejovské Kúpele, including classical and rapid chess events. The celebrations also highlighted the region's documented chess history and the contributions of successive generations of local players.

Competitive Chess & Regional Leagues

ŠK BLS Bardejov competes in the Slovak regional league system, providing opportunities for its members to gain experience in organized team chess. During the 2026–2027 season, the club's teams participate in 3. liga D2, including a junior team that competes against clubs from Prešov, Humenné, Stropkov, Svidník, and other regional chess centers. The club's league activities connect experienced competitors with developing players. Young members can gain valuable experience in longer games, team preparation, and competitive decision-making while representing Bardejov against established regional opponents. In addition, the club organizes individual competitions that allow players to build their national and international ratings.

Players associated with ŠK BLS Bardejov include Michal Jura, Matej Viglaš, Richard Viglaš, Timur Karol, Alica Banasová, and other members who regularly participate in rated competitions. Their appearances in regional events and international tournament starting lists illustrate the club's involvement across different generations of competitive chess.

Bardejovské Kúpele FIDE Open

The Bardejovské Kúpele FIDE Open is an important classical chess tournament organized by ŠK BLS Bardejov in cooperation with Bardejovské Kúpele a.s., the City of Bardejov, and the Prešov Regional Chess Federation (PKŠZ). The tournament takes place in the spa resort of Bardejovské Kúpele, combining international chess competition with a distinctive setting in northeastern Slovakia.

The January 2026 edition took place at the four-star Hotel Alexander from January 14–17. It attracted 41 players and featured seven Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. Jozef Benci won the tournament with six points, ahead of Patryk Mrozowski and Radovan Priechodský, who each scored 5.5 points.

The competition attracted participants from several countries, including Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. Its classical format offered players opportunities to gain experience in FIDE-rated games while competing against opponents with different playing styles and competitive backgrounds. The club also organized rapid chess competitions during the same tournament period. In January 2026, Ukrainian player Mykola Domanskiy won the Bardejovské Kúpele Rapid Open with 6.5 points from seven games, ahead of Radovan Priechodský and Ján Tokarčík.

Bardejovské Kúpele FIDE Open 2027

The Bardejovské Kúpele FIDE Open 2027 will take place from January 2–5, 2027, at Hotel Alexander in Bardejovské Kúpele, Slovakia. The event will feature seven classical Swiss-system rounds, with a time control of 90 minutes per player plus a 30-second increment per move. The announced prize fund totals €2,400, with €500 awarded to the overall winner. Additional prizes will recognize leading players in the women's, junior, senior, and rating categories. The organizers also plan to broadcast games from 30 chessboards, allowing spectators to follow the competition online.

Marián Jura serves as the principal contact person, while Mgr. Ivan Dzuriš is the Chief Arbiter. The tournament will provide opportunities for Slovak national and FIDE classical rating calculation, bringing together players from different clubs and countries. Junior Chess & School Education

Youth development forms a central part of ŠK BLS Bardejov's activities. The club provides chess training for children and teenagers, including lessons in schools and kindergartens, individual instruction, and organized competitions. Its programs introduce young players to chess fundamentals and help them progress toward structured competitive play. The club has established a close relationship with Základná škola Wolkerova, a primary school in Bardejov that regularly participates in regional and national school chess competitions. Together, they organize tournaments and support school teams competing in rapid chess championships.

In February 2024, ŠK BLS Bardejov helped organize the Slovak national championship for four-player school teams. The competition took place at the Mier Sports Hall in Bardejov and brought together students from primary and secondary schools. Its format required each participating team to include at least one girl, supporting mixed-team participation. The club continued these activities in March 2025 by organizing the Prešov Regional School Team Championships at ZŠ Wolkerova. The competition offered students the opportunity to represent their schools, develop teamwork, and qualify for higher-level events.

National School Chess Achievements

Young players associated with the club's training activities have achieved notable results in national school competitions. At the 2026 Slovak School Team Rapid Chess Championships, held on March 26 in Ružomberok, the ZŠ Wolkerova team won the silver medal in the older primary-school category. The successful team included Matej Viglaš, Richard Viglaš, Tomáš Kuľka, and Alica Banasová. Their performance was particularly impressive because the team completed the competition without losing a match. The national championship brought together more than 650 young participants, making the result an important achievement for the Bardejov school chess community.

The club's youth development program also supports students who compete individually in regional and national tournaments. By combining lessons, regular competitions, and opportunities to represent their schools, ŠK BLS Bardejov helps young players develop both their technical chess skills and competitive confidence.

Grand Prix Mládeže & Youth Tournaments

ŠK BLS Bardejov regularly organizes events within Slovakia's Grand Prix Mládeže (GPX) youth chess system. These competitions provide structured tournament opportunities for children in several age categories, allowing young players to compete against similarly aged opponents and progress through regional qualification stages. On June 7, 2025, the club organized the eastern Slovakia semifinal of the 2024–2025 Grand Prix Mládeže at ZŠ Wolkerova. The competition featured separate round-robin tournaments across seven categories, including boys' and girls' divisions for players under 8, under 11, and under 14, along with a GPX+ category.

Participants qualified through the regional Grand Prix series, and leading finishers advanced toward the national finals. The event brought together successful young competitors from eastern Slovakia and provided an opportunity to test their skills against other regional qualifiers. The club also organizes the Wolkerova Open and accompanying youth tournaments. Its October and November 2025 events included competitions for adult players and juniors, with separate categories for younger children and online broadcasts of selected games. These events connect local school chess activities with the wider Slovak competitive chess system.

Women's Chess & Inclusive Participation

ŠK BLS Bardejov supports participation by women and girls through school championships, junior competitions, and open tournaments with dedicated prize categories. Its school team events have included mixed-team requirements, encouraging girls to participate alongside boys in competitive chess. The Bardejovské Kúpele FIDE Open and rapid tournaments also include women's prize categories, recognizing competitive achievements within the wider tournament field. Young female players such as Alica Banasová and Anna Blaňarová have represented the Bardejov chess community in youth events and rated competitions.

Through these activities, the club provides competitive opportunities for players of different ages, experience levels, and backgrounds.

Rapid Chess & Community Events

Alongside classical chess, ŠK BLS Bardejov organizes rapid tournaments that bring together junior, adult, and senior players. These competitions provide additional opportunities for FIDE rating development and allow participants to compete in formats that require less time than multiday classical events. On December 28, 2025, the club organized the Bardejovské Kúpele Rapid Open at Hotel Alexander. The main tournament attracted 53 participants, while the accompanying youth Grand Prix event brought together 27 children. Benjamin Kardiš won the main competition with six points from seven rounds.

The club's program also includes local open tournaments, online chess sessions, and activities designed to introduce new players to competitive chess. Its official website promotes weekly online games through Lichess, providing another way for members to practice and remain connected between over-the-board events.

Partnerships & Regional Chess Development

ŠK BLS Bardejov works with schools, the City of Bardejov, regional chess authorities, and local institutions to organize competitions and develop chess participation. Its partnerships have supported school championships, international open tournaments, and youth qualification events. The club has cooperated with Bardejovské Kúpele a.s. and the Prešov Regional Chess Federation in staging the Bardejovské Kúpele FIDE Open. At the same time, its relationship with ZŠ Wolkerova has provided a foundation for school tournaments and the development of young players.

These partnerships connect community chess, educational activities, and competitive tournaments, allowing participants to progress from introductory lessons to rated events and national school championships.

Leadership & Organization

Marián Jura leads ŠK BLS Bardejov and serves as the principal contact person for its activities. He coordinates tournament organization, supports youth chess development, and represents the club in cooperation with schools and regional chess bodies. Jura has also served in organizational and officiating roles at school championships and youth competitions. His involvement extends to the Bardejovské Kúpele FIDE Open, where he handles participant communication and tournament arrangements.

The club's activities involve additional officials, coaches, volunteers, and players who contribute to junior training, regional team competitions, and tournament organization.
