♟️ About Federação Brasiliense de Xadrez
The Federação Brasiliense de Xadrez (FBX), or Brasília Chess Federation, is the governing chess organization for Brazil's Federal District. Founded on July 20, 1965, the federation promotes competitive chess, organizes official championships, supports affiliated clubs, and develops opportunities for players of different ages and skill levels. Based in Brasília, the country's capital, FBX operates within the Brazilian chess system and maintains its affiliation with the Confederação Brasileira de Xadrez (CBX). The federation oversees a varied competitive program that includes classical, rapid, and blitz tournaments, district championships, youth festivals, women's competitions, and major national open events. Its flagship international competition, the Brasília Chess Open, brings together experienced masters, ambitious competitors, and emerging talents. Beyond tournaments, FBX also supports chess education, community activities, and the development of young players who represent the Federal District in Brazilian championships.📜 History & Development
The history of the Federação Brasiliense de Xadrez dates to July 20, 1965, just five years after the inauguration of Brasília as Brazil's capital. Over the following decades, the federation developed an organizational framework for chess across the Federal District, establishing official competitions and coordinating activities involving local players and clubs. Its historical leadership records identify Lindner Reis as president in 1968, followed by several generations of administrators who helped guide the organization. An important chapter occurred between 1995 and 2002, when two organizations claimed responsibility for representing chess in the Federal District. The institutional division ended in 2002 through an agreement that restored a unified federation. In subsequent years, FBX maintained its district championship structure and expanded its activities across classical chess, faster time controls, scholastic tournaments, and community events. More recently, the federation has strengthened its public tournament program through initiatives such as the Brasília Chess Open, the Circuito de Xadrez Blitz FBX, and regional youth championships. These activities connect the Federal District's chess community with national competitions while providing regular opportunities for rated tournament participation.🏆 District Championships & Competitive Chess
FBX organizes the Campeonato Brasiliense de Xadrez Clássico, the principal classical chess championship of the Federal District. The competition uses qualifying stages and a championship final, giving eligible local players a structured path toward the district title. For example, the 2024 final took place at the Minas Brasília Tênis Clube and featured an 11-round round-robin competition involving players who qualified through earlier stages and designated championship categories. The federation continued this competitive structure in 2025 and 2026. Its 2026 classical championship program included qualifying semifinals, FIDE and CBX rating opportunities, and places in the district final. In addition, FBX organizes official rapid and blitz championships, senior competitions, and age-category events, creating competitive pathways for experienced players and younger generations. District championships also recognize achievements beyond the overall standings. Depending on the competition, the federation awards distinctions for women, senior players, and junior age groups. This format allows players to compete in the same broader chess community while pursuing titles and recognition within their respective categories.🌍 Brasília Chess Open — Major International Tournament
The Brasília Chess Open is one of the federation's principal tournament projects. Organized in cooperation with the Confederação Brasileira de Xadrez, the event brings national-level competition to Brazil's capital and attracts players seeking FIDE-rated games, championship qualification opportunities, and international title norms. The festival combines serious classical chess with faster tournaments, offering different competitive formats within a single event. The 2025 edition took place at the Grand Bittar Hotel and included classical, rapid, and blitz tournaments, with an announced prize package exceeding R$28,000. The 2026 edition moved to the Biblioteca Nacional de Brasília, where the federation continued its partnership with CBX and maintained the event's role in opening the Brazilian national open tournament circuit. The Brasília Chess Open 2027 is scheduled for January 11–17, 2027, at the Kubitschek Plaza Hotel in Brasília. Its main classical competition will feature nine Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The festival will also include rapid, blitz, bullet, and chess-problem-solving competitions. The announced festival prize package exceeds R$27,000, with prizes across the overall standings and multiple player categories. The classical competition will provide qualification opportunities for the finals of the Brazilian Absolute and Women's Championships, while eligible participants may pursue international title norms under FIDE regulations. Through this event, FBX connects the local chess community with leading players and broader competitive opportunities across Brazil and internationally.🎓 Junior Chess & Youth Development
Youth chess represents a substantial part of the federation's activities. FBX organizes championships for children and teenagers, including the Festival Brasiliense de Xadrez da Criança and the Festival Brasiliense da Juventude de Xadrez. These competitions award district titles across different age groups and provide opportunities for young players to progress toward regional and national events. In February 2026, the federation organized the Festival Brasiliense da Juventude de Xadrez for the under-14, under-16, and under-18 categories. The tournament included both open and girls' divisions and helped identify representatives for national youth competitions. Later that year, the Festival Brasiliense de Xadrez da Criança – Ímpares brought together players in the under-7 through under-17 age categories at the Clube do Exército in Brasília. Another important initiative is Xadrez Nova Geração (XNG), a youth development project featured within the federation's activities. XNG connects young players, parents, coaches, and tournament organizers through competitions, educational experiences, and participation in events beyond the Federal District. Its first Campeonato XNG in October 2026 welcomed children and young adults aged 6–20 at the S4 Hotel in Águas Claras.🌟 Youth Achievements & National Representation
Players from the Federal District have recorded notable results in Brazilian junior and scholastic competitions. During the 2026 Jogos Escolares do Distrito Federal, Miguel Souza Damaceno Martins and João Lehmann Cavalcanti qualified for national school competition in the boys' division. Larissa Alencar Lyra and Isabela Paiva Silva secured the corresponding places in the girls' competition. At the Jogos Escolares Brasileiros in September 2026, Miguel Damasceno and João Cavalcanti won the Bronze Series title in the rapid chess team event. Meanwhile, Isabela Paiva finished 12th in the girls' individual competition. These achievements illustrate the competitive opportunities available to young Brasília players who progress from local events to national school championships. The district also recorded three runner-up finishes at the 2026 Brazilian School Chess Championship, with Lucas Falcão, Marina Ferreira, and Rafael Júnior among the successful representatives. Such results provide tangible examples of the achievements of the Federal District's emerging chess generation.♕ Women's Chess
Women's chess has a dedicated place in the federation's organizational structure and competitive activities. FBX maintains a Director of Women's Affairs, a position held by Amanda Ketley Dourado da Silva during the 2026–2030 administration. Its championship program includes women's categories, dedicated competitions, and qualification opportunities for female players. In March 2025, the federation organized the Festival Brasiliense Feminino as part of its International Women's Day activities. Women's competitions also form part of the broader district championship program, while the Brasília Chess Open provides prizes and national championship qualification opportunities for female participants. Additionally, several FBX events offer reduced registration fees to encourage participation by women and girls.♜ Team Chess, Regional Cooperation & Affiliated Clubs
FBX works with affiliated clubs and sporting associations throughout the Federal District. Its published affiliation network includes ASCADE, ASES-DF, APCEF-DF, ASTCU, Sindilegis, and Mearas Escola de Xadrez, among other organizations. Through these relationships, the federation connects chess activities across clubs, educational environments, and community institutions. Team chess also forms part of its competition program. The federation has promoted the Campeonato Brasiliense por Equipes and publicized team tournaments involving local clubs and sporting organizations. In addition, regional competitions such as the Campeonato Regional Centro-Oeste strengthen connections between Brasília players and the wider chess community of Brazil's Central-West Region. The federation's cooperation with CBX provides an additional link between local competition and the national championship structure. This relationship is particularly visible in the Brasília Chess Open and in tournaments where official ratings and qualification rules apply.⚡ Rapid, Blitz & Community Chess
Alongside classical championships, FBX maintains an active program of shorter time-control competitions. The Circuito de Xadrez Blitz FBX 2026 featured monthly tournament stages at the Biblioteca Nacional de Brasília, using a time control of three minutes plus a two-second increment. The circuit provided opportunities for FIDE and CBX blitz rating development and welcomed players across multiple age groups. The federation also organizes rapid championships and supports other community chess activities. These events offer additional competitive opportunities for players who cannot always commit to multiday classical tournaments. Moreover, they help sustain regular tournament participation between major district championships and national open events.👤 Leadership & Organization
Marcos de Sousa Silveira serves as President of the Federação Brasiliense de Xadrez. The federation reelected him during its General Assembly on June 27, 2026, for the administrative term running from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2030. His leadership follows an earlier presidential term that began in 2023. The executive administration also includes First Vice President Neyde Lúcia Moraes Lira de Siqueira, Second Vice President Bárbara Ribeiro Araújo, Technical Director Clodomiro Vitorino Leite, Finance Director Cláudio Nishizawa, and Communications Director Carolina Araújo de Andrade. The organization maintains dedicated responsibilities for affiliated clubs, women's chess, youth development, and administrative operations.🏠 Headquarters & Chess Venues
The federation identifies Clube de Xadrez ASCADE, in Brasília's Setor de Clubes Sul, as its operating location. However, FBX conducts tournaments at several venues throughout the Federal District, depending on the size and format of each competition. Its tournament history includes events at the Biblioteca Nacional de Brasília, Minas Brasília Tênis Clube, Clube do Exército, and other local sporting facilities. Major Brasília Chess Open editions have also used central hotel and cultural venues, including the Grand Bittar Hotel and Kubitschek Plaza Hotel.
