♟️ About Corinthia Chess Academy “Argonautis”

Corinthia Chess Academy “Argonautis” (Σκακιστική Ακαδημία Κορινθίας «Αργοναύτης») is a Greek chess club and training academy based in Corinth, in the Peloponnese region. Established in late 2010, the organization combines competitive chess, junior instruction, school outreach, and tournament organization. Its activities include the Corinth Open, rapid competitions, regional championships, and Greek national team events. The academy also helps children and adults develop their chess skills through structured coaching. Argonautis has built a strong position within the Corinthian chess community. In addition to organizing events in its home city, the club participates in competitions across Greece and supports players seeking experience at progressively higher levels. Its work connects school chess with established club competition and wider opportunities in the Peloponnese.

📜 History & Development

Corinthia Chess Academy “Argonautis” was founded in late 2010 and registered with the Greek Chess Federation on January 7, 2011, under registration number 492. Its founders sought to expand access to chess coaching and organized competition in Corinthia, particularly for young players. The club gradually developed a competitive team while establishing relationships with schools and other local organizations. By 2018, the academy had secured teaching facilities at the Corinth Youth Center on Koliatsou Street. As its activities expanded, Argonautis organized international opens, local rapid competitions, and school championships. Its players also represented the region in Greek team competitions. These connected activities helped the academy develop from a new regional organization into an established part of chess life in Corinth.

🏆 Greek National Team Chess Championships

Team chess is an important part of Argonautis's identity. The academy's published history records a national team title in 2013, along with second-place results in 2012 and 2014. It competed regularly at the highest national level through 2018 and returned to the Greek top division in 2022. These appearances placed the Corinthian club alongside established teams from across the country. In July 2026, Argonautis participated in the Greek A' Ethniki Team Championship in Patras, where 34 teams competed. The event marked the club's fourth consecutive appearance in that competition and its tenth participation at the highest national level since its foundation. Its delegation represented Corinthia and the broader Peloponnese region. Through team competitions, Argonautis offers both experienced players and developing juniors opportunities to represent their club.

🥇 Peloponnese Regional Championships

Argonautis has also achieved notable results in regional team chess. According to its official historical summary, the club secured 12 regional team honors between 2019 and 2026, including youth championships, cup victories, and team championship titles. These results demonstrate the depth of its competitive activity across age groups. Regional competitions also provide a bridge between regular club training and national events. In March 2026, Argonautis won the Peloponnese Regional Team Championship in Tripoli. Under captain and coach Kostas Georgiou, the team won all five matches against a field of 13 participating teams. The victory secured qualification for the Greek A' Ethniki Championship. Moreover, it continued the club's record of strong regional performances.

🌍 International Tournaments: Isthmia & Hermes

Tournament organization has been part of the academy's work since its early years. In cooperation with Peristeri Chess Club, Argonautis helped stage the inaugural Isthmia International Chess Tournament from August 18–25, 2011, at the Alkyon Hotel in Vrachati, Corinthia. The event featured a nine-round Swiss format with separate rating groups and drew on local institutional support. The Isthmia series continued through 2016, bringing visiting players to the region. The club also organized the Hermes International Chess Tournament in 2018. Together, these events formed part of its efforts to develop opportunities for classical tournament play beyond regular club matches. They also connected chess in Corinthia with a wider national and international audience.

🏆 Corinth Open Tournament

The Corinth Open is one of Argonautis's established tournament series. It brings together players from different rating categories and age groups, providing opportunities to compete during the holiday period. The event complements the club's regular rapid competitions, school activities, and participation in regional championships. Its multi-group structure makes the tournament accessible to competitors with different levels of experience.

🌍 11th Corinth Open Tournament 2026 — Groups A, B & C

Corinthia Chess Academy “Argonautis” will organize the 11th Corinth Open Tournament 2026 from December 27–30, 2026, in Corinth, Greece. The competition is scheduled for seven rounds and offers three groups according to playing strength. Matches will take place at the academy's facilities and the nearby 3rd Elementary School of Corinth, approximately 50 meters from the club. The organizers have announced a total cash prize fund of €1,500. The event provides a year-end opportunity for club players, juniors, and visiting competitors to play tournament chess in Corinth. Its group divisions accommodate different levels of competitive experience while keeping participants within one festival. Full information is available on the 11th Corinth Open Tournament 2026 page.

⚡ Rapid Chess Competitions

Argonautis operates a continuing series of rapid tournaments at its academy. In October 2026, the club announced its 53rd and 54th rapid events, including a competition scheduled for October 18. These events give members and visitors regular opportunities to gain practical experience between longer tournaments. Moreover, the shorter format is useful for juniors developing confidence with chess clocks and competitive decision-making.

🎓 Chess Academy & Player Development

Chess education forms a central part of Argonautis's mission. The academy offers instruction to children and adults at different playing levels, with an emphasis on fundamental knowledge, strategic understanding, calculation, and practical play. Its coaching activity is associated with Kostas Georgiou, who also leads team competition efforts. The club has reported a program involving more than 100 young students and has continued offering groups for beginners and more experienced players. Training and competition reinforce one another. Students can begin with lessons, move into local rapid or school tournaments, and eventually represent the club in larger competitions. This progression helps players build experience while remaining connected to the local chess community.

🏫 School Chess & Youth Championships

Argonautis works with schools and parents' associations throughout Corinthia to make chess instruction accessible to children. Its documented educational activities include schools in Corinth, Loutraki, Perachora, Velo-Vochas, Lechaio, Kiato, Perigiali, Xylokeriza, Agioi Theodoroi, and nearby communities. The club has organized lessons on school premises as well as activities at its own academy. As a result, students can discover chess without necessarily traveling to the club's headquarters for every session. The academy has also contributed to Peloponnese school chess championships and qualifying competitions for national scholastic events. Its history records involvement in nine regional school championship editions between 2012 and 2023. In addition, its youth teams have earned regional honors over multiple seasons. These activities connect classroom learning with organized tournament experience.

🌍 Chess Beyond Corinth

Players from Argonautis take part in chess events elsewhere in Greece, including tournaments in Ikaria, Paleochora, Kavala, Trikala, and Thessaloniki. Its players have also participated in European championship competition. Traveling to different events offers opportunities to face unfamiliar opponents, improve tournament skills, and build relationships with other chess communities. Meanwhile, the academy continues welcoming visiting competitors to its own tournaments in Corinth.

🏠 Club Headquarters & Playing Facilities

The academy operates from the Corinth Youth Center, Koliatsou 112, 20131 Corinth, Greece. These facilities support lessons, regular club meetings, and rapid chess tournaments. For larger events, the organizers may also use nearby educational premises. The 11th Corinth Open 2026 is scheduled to use both the academy and the nearby 3rd Elementary School of Corinth.

👤 Leadership & Organization

Ioannis (Giannis) Papakyriakos serves as President of Corinthia Chess Academy “Argonautis”. The academy's published organizational information also identifies Dimitris Alepoudeas, Vasiliki Lourida, Nikos Zervas, and Michalis Karsiotis among its leadership team. Kostas Georgiou contributes to coaching and competitive team activities, while Vasiliki (Vicky) Lourida is a principal public contact for information and registrations.
