Chess has been an established part of Mezőkövesd's sporting life for decades. The chess department has developed a competitive identity through participation in Hungarian team championships and the organization of local events. One of its best-known traditions is the Matyó Cup, a team chess tournament with a history extending across several decades. The department organized its 40th edition in 2016, while the 50th Matyó Cup took place in June 2026. This long-running event has helped establish Mezőkövesd as a regular meeting place for chess clubs from different Hungarian regions. The department has also maintained individual chess competitions, including the Kis Matyó Rapid Open series and the Hegedűs Rafael Memorial. Through these events, it combines competitive chess with the preservation of local sporting history.🏆 Matyó Cup — A Longstanding Team Chess Tradition
The Matyó Cup is one of the department's principal sporting events. The competition emphasizes team chess, club cooperation, and friendly sporting relationships. The 50th edition took place on June 27, 2026, at the Rendezvényközpont in Mezőkövesd. The event featured nine rounds of Swiss-system team competition, with four players representing each team and a time control of ten minutes per player. A total of 19 teams competed, with participants arriving from Budapest, Miskolc, Eger, Tiszaújváros, Edelény, Salgótarján, and other locations. Mezőkövesd fielded six teams, demonstrating the scale of local involvement. The home club achieved a significant result when Mezőkövesd Zsóry SE I finished third. Its lineup consisted of Zoltán Becskei, Krisztián Kerek, Albert Vajda, and Tibor Barabás. In addition to the team standings, the event recognized outstanding performances on individual boards and presented special awards for women, junior competitors, seniors, and local players. Consequently, the Matyó Cup supports both competitive achievement and wider participation in chess.🕯️ Hegedűs Rafael & Kántor József Memorial Tournament
The Hegedűs Rafael Memorial commemorates a player who represented the Mezőkövesd chess team for more than thirty years. Rafael Hegedűs played on the team's leading boards and became known for his exceptional loyalty to the club, despite not originally being from Mezőkövesd. The chess department established a memorial tournament to honor his contribution and preserve his memory within the local chess community. The fifth edition took place from December 27–29, 2024, at Kispipa Restaurant. The event followed a six-round FIDE-rated classical format and continued the department's tradition of organizing competitive chess during the final days of December. In 2026, the tournament also honors József Kántor, who passed away in 2025. The organizers remember him as a dependable member and supporter of the Mezőkövesd chess team. By commemorating these two individuals, the department recognizes the importance of loyalty, friendship, and sustained personal commitment to club chess.🌍 VII Hegedűs Rafael – II Kántor József Memorial 2026
