♟️ About Cheshire and North Wales Chess Association

Cheshire and North Wales Chess Association (CNWCA) is a long-established regional chess organization representing players and chess activity across Cheshire and North Wales in the United Kingdom. The association coordinates competitive chess, county representation, junior development, tournaments, and regional chess initiatives while maintaining links with the wider English chess structure. Founded in 1888, the organization is one of the older county chess associations in Britain. Its geographic remit was expanded in 1968 to incorporate North Wales, creating the modern Cheshire and North Wales structure. CNWCA is affiliated with the English Chess Federation (ECF) and the Northern Counties Chess Union (NCCU). The current President is Glenn Trueman, an experienced chess coach and long-time contributor to chess in Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

CNWCA supports a varied tournament program covering classical, Rapid, Blitz, junior, and county competition. One of its most visible recent projects is the Cheadle FIDE Open, a midweek classical tournament held at Village Hotel Cheadle. The event was introduced in 2025 and quickly became an established annual tournament offering both FIDE and ECF-rated games in professional playing conditions. The inaugural Cheadle FIDE Open 2025 attracted a strong field and was won by Grandmaster Keith Arkell, who scored a perfect 6/6. The second edition followed in February 2026, again using the Altitude Suite at Village Hotel Cheadle and operating under FIDE and ECF rating regulations. CNWCA also supports shorter-format events, including the recurring Cheadle Blitz series. These competitions provide additional rated opportunities for local club players, juniors, and stronger regional competitors. Together, these events form part of a wider effort to expand organized chess opportunities across Cheshire and neighboring areas.

🌱 Junior Chess & Development

Junior chess is an important part of CNWCA’s current activity. The Cheshire and North Wales Junior Championships bring together young players from across the region in age-group competition. The 2026 championship at Cheadle Hulme School included U9, U11, and U18 sections, with six rounds of ECF-rated chess. The event also plays an important role in county-team selection. Strong performers in the younger age groups can be selected to represent Cheshire and North Wales in English Primary Schools Chess Association inter-association competitions. Regional junior teams compete in national and northern qualifying events, including U9 and U11 inter-association championships. This gives young players a pathway from local school and club chess into representative county competition. CNWCA-linked junior activity also connects with established local events such as the Cheshire Megafinal, junior Rapid tournaments, school chess, and the wider UK Chess Challenge structure.

🌍 County & Regional Chess

As an affiliated county association, CNWCA provides a representative structure for players across Cheshire and North Wales. The association works within the Northern Counties Chess Union, alongside other northern county organizations. Historically, this has included county championships, representative matches, regional titles, and qualification routes into wider English competitions. The association also maintains connections with local clubs and organizers across areas including Cheadle, Stockport, Warrington, Macclesfield, Chester, North Wales, and surrounding communities. Recent ECF records show Cheshire and North Wales teams continuing to participate in junior inter-association competition, while individual players regularly compete under the regional association designation in rated events.

📚 History & Development

The Cheshire chess organization was established in 1888, giving the association more than a century of competitive history. In 1968, its structure was enlarged to incorporate North Wales. The organization subsequently became known as the Cheshire and North Wales Chess Association and continued its affiliation with national and northern regional chess bodies. The association has passed through several generations of administrators, players, and tournament organizers. In recent years, its activity has entered a period of renewed development, particularly through new tournaments and junior events. The launch of the Cheadle FIDE Open in 2025 is one example of this renewed tournament program. Support for new chess events in Cheshire has also formed part of the ECF’s grassroots development activity. The current program combines the association’s traditional county role with modern FIDE-rated tournaments, junior championships, local Blitz events, and wider development initiatives.

♟️ Cheadle FIDE Open

The 3rd Cheadle FIDE Open 2027 is scheduled for February 2–4, 2027, at Village Hotel Cheadle in Greater Manchester. The tournament is a six-round FIDE and ECF-rated classical Open held in the hotel’s Altitude Suite. It continues the series established in 2025 and provides players with several internationally rated classical games during a compact three-day schedule. Alex Longson is the organizer contact for the 2027 edition. He is an experienced tournament organizer and arbiter who is also closely involved with major UK junior competitions. The Cheadle Open has become one of CNWCA’s most recognizable current events and reflects the association’s renewed emphasis on high-quality rated tournament chess.
