♟️ About Ikaria Chess Club
Ikaria Chess Club “Ioannis Tzelepis”, officially known in Greek as Skakistikos Omilos Ikarias “Ioannis Tzelepis,” is a historic chess organization based in Aghios Kirykos on the Greek island of Ikaria. Founded in 1981, the club promotes chess throughout the year through activities held both on Ikaria and in Athens. It welcomes children, adult players, beginners, experienced competitors, and members of the wider Ikarian community. Moreover, the club uses chess to connect Ikarians who live on the island with those based elsewhere in Greece and abroad. Its program combines competitive tournaments, training, cultural activities, social events, and initiatives that preserve the island’s distinctive chess tradition. Kosmas Kefalos serves as club president and plays a central role in its organizational work.🏆 Local Chess, Training and Aegean Cooperation
The club organizes regular activities in Aghios Kirykos and other parts of Ikaria. Its program includes chess lessons for children, local championships, the Ikaria Individual Cup, rapid and blitz tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions, blindfold displays, memorial events, and public chess activities. In addition, the club has organized arbiter seminars and competitions approved for national or international rating. It also cooperates with chess organizations from Samos, Rhodes, Kalymnos, Lesvos, Karpathos, and other Aegean islands. Through these partnerships, Ikaria Chess Club supports regional team championships, youth events, hybrid competitions, and online tournaments. Therefore, players from smaller island communities can gain regular competitive experience and maintain stronger links with the wider Greek chess network.🌍 Ikaros International Chess Festival
The annual Ikaros International Chess Festival is the club’s principal event and the highlight of its tournament calendar. The festival began in the late 1970s, while Ikaria Chess Club has supported its continued development since the club’s establishment. Held every July in Aghios Kirykos, Ikaros has become one of Greece’s longest-running international chess events. Its program traditionally combines the Aegean Open Championship with youth, women’s, veteran, rapid, blitz, team, problem-solving, simultaneous, and cultural activities. The club works with the Municipality of Ikaria, Aegean chess bodies, local sports organizations, arbiters, sponsors, accommodation providers, and transport companies. It manages participant communication, hospitality arrangements, registrations, side events, local support, and much of the festival’s practical organization. Through Ikaros and its year-round activities, the club promotes Ikaria as an international chess destination where serious competition meets island hospitality and community participation.
