♟️ About Markus Hansson
Markus Hansson is an Estonian chess tournament organizer, FIDE Arbiter (FA), chess coach, and competitive player based in Tallinn, Estonia. He is increasingly active in the organization and technical management of FIDE-rated events, ranging from national championships and large open festivals to specialized round-robin tournaments designed for title norms and rating development. Hansson holds FIDE ID 4505620 and received the official FIDE Arbiter title in 2025. His work now combines tournament organization, arbitration, coaching, player communication, and competition administration. He is particularly associated with a developing series of closed classical tournaments in Tallinn. These events provide structured opportunities for players seeking International Master norms as well as competitors who want intensive FIDE-rated round-robin experience.🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities
One of Hansson’s main current projects is the Tallinn IM Norm Tournament. The November 2026 edition takes place at Kreutzwald Hotel Tallinn and uses a ten-player, nine-round round-robin format at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The IM tournament is accompanied by the Tallinn Rating Group Tournaments A & B. These groups give rated players nine classical games against opponents of broadly similar strength. Registration, player communication, group formation, and tournament administration are handled directly by Hansson. The series is already continuing into 2027. A further Tallinn IM Norm Tournament is scheduled for January 11–15, 2027, confirming that the norm events are being developed as a recurring project rather than as a one-off competition. Hansson is also involved in other major Estonian events. He has served as Chief Arbiter at Estonian championship competitions and at tournaments within the Tallinn Chess Festival. At the 2026 festival, he was Chief Arbiter for major events held at Tallinn University of Technology. His tournament work also includes the Lasnamäe Chess Tournament 2026, where he served in the organizational and arbitration team, as well as other national and regional events recorded through the Estonian Chess Federation calendar.⚖️ Arbitration & Tournament Management
Tournament arbitration has become a central part of Hansson’s chess activity. After receiving the FIDE Arbiter title in 2025, he has worked at national championships, international festivals, team competitions, youth events, and open tournaments. In July 2026, he served as Chief Arbiter of the Estonian Women’s Blitz Championship at the Paul Keres Chess House in Tallinn. He has also worked as Chief Arbiter or tournament official at Tallinn Chess Festival events and other competitions organized in cooperation with the Estonian Chess Federation. At the Saaremaa Chess Festival 2026, Hansson was listed both as Chief Arbiter and as a contact for communications and social media. This reflects a broader role that extends beyond enforcing tournament rules to event administration and participant communication. His norm tournaments require a different type of management. Closed round robins must satisfy detailed FIDE requirements concerning titles, ratings, federation representation, pairings, and tournament conditions. Hansson manages registration directly and works with International Arbiter Gabriel Andreas Doujak on the Tallinn IM Norm and Rating Group events.🌱 Chess Coaching & Player Development
Hansson has also been active as a chess coach for more than a decade. He teaches players online and in person and continues to maintain a coaching presence through Chess.com. In 2023, Chess.com selected him as one of its Coach of the Month featured coaches. His public coaching profile emphasizes structured lessons and individual development, while his MarkusChess' Chess Club on Chess.com provides an online community for students and players. The club has hosted recurring student tournaments and serves as another connection between Hansson’s coaching and tournament work. His experience as an active tournament player also allows him to approach coaching from both the organizational and competitive sides of chess.📚 Development & Current Projects
Hansson remains active as a player while increasingly focusing on arbitration and tournament organization. He competes for MK Kaksikodad and has participated in Estonian national competitions and international opens. His role in Estonian chess has expanded particularly quickly since receiving the FA title. Alongside federation events, he is now developing independent tournament projects that create additional opportunities for serious classical players in Tallinn. The Tallinn IM Norm & Rating Group Tournaments 2026 illustrate this approach. Stronger players can pursue an IM norm in a controlled round-robin environment, while developing players can enter Rating Groups A and B for nine FIDE-rated classical games. The continuation of the project in January 2027 suggests a longer-term tournament series focused on title norms and intensive rating competition in Tallinn.
