♟️ About Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs de Haute-Savoie

The Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs de Haute-Savoie (CDJE74) is the official departmental chess organization for Haute-Savoie, France. Founded on May 25, 1993, the committee operates as a decentralized body of the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) and is affiliated with the Ligue Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes des Échecs. CDJE74 is responsible for organizing, coordinating, promoting, and developing chess throughout Haute-Savoie. Its role includes departmental championships, youth and school competitions, club support, tournament regulation, arbitration, training, and qualification pathways toward regional and national events. The committee is led by Michel Carobbio, President. The current leadership also includes Richard Weber as Vice-President, Veronica Dmitriev as Treasurer, and Stéphane Dudognon as Secretary. Specialized commissions cover technical matters, youth and school chess, arbitration, women’s chess and inclusion, as well as health, social, and disability initiatives.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

CDJE74 coordinates a broad annual competition program across Haute-Savoie. Its calendar includes the Open de Haute-Savoie, departmental youth and school championships, regional team competitions, Coupe Loubatière activity, rapid and blitz events, and tournaments organized in cooperation with affiliated local clubs. The Open de Haute-Savoie is one of the committee’s principal adult events. The 2026 edition was held in Vétraz-Monthoux from May 14–17 and featured seven FIDE-rated rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The tournament awarded the Haute-Savoie Open champion while also recognizing the leading female and junior players. CDJE74 also provides a framework for competitions organized by clubs throughout the department. Its website maintains a calendar covering classical, rapid, blitz, women’s, team, and youth events, allowing clubs and players to coordinate activity across the region. For the 2026/2027 season, the committee continues to expand its tournament structure while publishing updated sporting regulations and event specifications. These regulations establish common standards for the Open de Haute-Savoie, youth championships, school competitions, and the new departmental youth rapid circuit.

🌱 Junior Chess & Development

Youth development is one of CDJE74’s most active areas. The Championnat Départemental d’Échecs Jeunes de Haute-Savoie serves as the official departmental qualifying stage for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Youth Championship and, subsequently, the French Youth Championships. The 2026/2027 championship takes place on November 14–15, 2026, at Espace Grand-Bo in Le Grand-Bornand. Separate tournaments are organized for U8, U10, U12, U14, and U16 players. U10 through U16 compete over six rounds at 50 minutes plus 10 seconds per move, while U8 plays seven Rapid rounds at 25+10. The previous departmental championship in 2025 attracted more than 150 young competitors, demonstrating the strong level of junior participation in Haute-Savoie. CDJE74 also organizes school chess. Its 2026 departmental school championship brought together 262 children from 27 schools, including 60 girls. For the 2026/2027 season, the committee introduced the Circuit Rapide Jeunes 74 (CRJ 74). The circuit replaces and develops the earlier Challenge des Jeunes des Savoie at departmental level. Each stage offers an Open tournament alongside an Accession section for players rated below 1100, creating a more accessible pathway for beginners. CDJE74 also supports stronger juniors preparing for national competition. In April 2026, the committee organized a two-day preparation camp in Veigy-Foncenex for 18 qualified young players, with technical training led by GM Christian Bauer and physical preparation by Marc Carrère.

🤝 Clubs, Training & Inclusion

The committee works directly with FFE-affiliated clubs throughout Haute-Savoie. Its statutes give CDJE74 responsibility for supporting existing clubs, assisting the administrative development of new clubs, coordinating departmental competitions, and helping organizers with equipment and regulatory requirements where possible. Training and arbitration also form part of this structure. Dedicated commissions oversee technical development, youth programs, and arbitration, helping maintain consistent tournament standards across affiliated clubs and events. CDJE74 also supports broader access to chess. Its organizational structure includes a Commission Féminines et Mixité for women’s chess and mixed participation, together with a Commission Santé Social Handicap focused on chess as an inclusive sporting and social activity. The committee’s calendar includes women’s competitions such as the Coupe de la Parité, Nationale 2 Féminine, and activities connected with the Trophée Roza Lallemand. This work complements the committee’s school, junior, club, and general competition programs.

📚 History & Development

Since its creation in 1993, CDJE74 has developed into the central coordinating body for organized chess in Haute-Savoie. Its responsibilities extend beyond running tournaments: the committee implements FFE policy at departmental level, supports clubs, establishes competition regulations, awards departmental titles, and selects players and teams for regional and national stages. Recent seasons show continued growth in youth and school participation. At the same time, the committee has modernized its competition structure with online registration, digital tournament information, updated regulations, and new formats such as the Circuit Rapide Jeunes 74. The Championnat Départemental Jeunes Haute-Savoie 2026/2027 reflects this wider role. Rather than functioning as an isolated youth tournament, it forms part of a structured pathway linking local clubs, departmental qualification, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes championship, and the French national youth championship system. Through its combination of competition management, club support, youth development, training, inclusion, and federation coordination, CDJE74 remains the principal chess organization serving players and clubs throughout Haute-Savoie.
