Club Ajedrez Diagonal Alcorcón is a chess club based in Alcorcón, in the Madrid metropolitan area of Spain. Founded in 2018, the club combines competitive chess, structured training and regular tournament organization. The club operates from the Centro Municipal de las Artes – Teatro Buero Vallejo in Alcorcón. The club was founded by chess coaches Alfredo Pérez Bruni and Ismael Martínez Barahona, with a strong emphasis on developing young players. Alfredo Pérez Bruni currently serves as President of Club Ajedrez Diagonal Alcorcón. He also directs and coordinates the club’s chess school and remains closely involved in its tournament program. Today, Diagonal Alcorcón combines chess education with extensive competitive activity. The club fields teams throughout the Madrid league structure and organizes regular training, tournaments and club meetings. In addition, its members compete in regional, national and international events. This combination has created a clear pathway from introductory chess lessons to serious federated competition.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Diagonal Alcorcón runs classical, rapid and blitz competitions, while also supporting other chess events in and around Madrid. Its calendar has included the Open Sub2400 Diagonal Alcorcón, Slowblitz events, rapid competitions and larger seasonal festivals. One of its principal recurring events is the International Christmas Open Diagonal Alcorcón. The fifth edition takes place from December 26–30, 2026 at Teatro Buero Vallejo. Club Ajedrez Diagonal Alcorcón organizes the event together with the Alcorcón City Council, while Alfredo Pérez Bruni serves as Tournament Director. The 2026 Open features nine rounds of FIDE-rated classical chess and offers opportunities to satisfy title-norm requirements when all FIDE conditions are met. The wider Christmas program has developed beyond a single open tournament. Previous editions have included closed competitions, rapid events and other festival activities. Moreover, the club regularly organizes smaller events during the year. These tournaments give local players frequent competitive opportunities while also attracting participants from outside Alcorcón.

🌱 Junior Chess & Development

Junior development has played a central role in Diagonal Alcorcón since its foundation. The club’s chess school offers in-person and online group classes, as well as individual training. Programs are available for children, young players and adults, so students can enter at an appropriate level and progress toward competitive chess. The club also works with schools and other educational centers. It can provide instructors, teaching materials and structured chess activities adapted to each institution. Young members can then move from lessons into club competition, regional championships and national events. Diagonal Alcorcón has achieved notable results in youth chess. The club reached Madrid’s top regional division only a few years after its creation. During the 2022–23 season, its first team finished runner-up in División de Honor. The club also won the Madrid Children’s League and achieved first-place results in Madrid rapid competition during that period. In addition, Diagonal players have represented the club in Spanish team championships and European competition. This broad team structure supports both experienced players and developing juniors. Younger members can therefore progress from training and age-group competition into adult league teams. 📚 History & Development

Club Ajedrez Diagonal Alcorcón began in 2018, when Alfredo Pérez Bruni and Ismael Martínez Barahona created a club with a particular focus on youth development. Results followed quickly. Within four years, the organization had promoted a team into Madrid’s División de Honor and established successful junior and rapid teams. Since then, the club has expanded its activities across training, league chess, individual tournaments and travel to competitions elsewhere in Spain and Europe. Regular Friday chess meetings complement its formal courses and competitive calendar. Meanwhile, the Christmas festival and other recurring tournaments have strengthened its role as an event organizer in Alcorcón. The club continues to connect educational chess with organized competition. Players can begin with lessons, participate in internal activities, join league teams and eventually compete at regional, national or international level. That structure remains one of the defining features of Club Ajedrez Diagonal Alcorcón.
