Le Palamède – Club d’Échecs de Rethel et du Pays Rethélois is an established chess club based in Rethel, Ardennes, France. The organization serves Rethel and the wider Pays Rethélois area through competitive chess, training, junior development, school activities, and regular tournament organization. The modern club was created in 1985 by Alain Lhoest after his arrival in Rethel. It was formally registered as an association on April 1, 1988, with the purpose of promoting the sporting practice of chess both inside and outside its club premises. The club initially met in Salle Marcy beneath Rethel Town Hall before moving to its present base at Centre Linard. Régis Noizet currently serves as President. The management team also includes Emmanuel Robert as Vice-President, Donatien Noizet as Treasurer, and Frédéric Bohr as Secretary and Webmaster. The French Chess Federation currently records 76 Licence A and 44 Licence B players, giving Le Palamède around 120 registered members. Its leading adult team competes in Nationale 3, while its youth players participate in regional interclub competition.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Le Palamède maintains an active competitive calendar covering rapid chess, classical events, internal tournaments, team competition, and participation in events throughout the Grand Est region. One of the club’s principal recurring competitions is the Rapide de Rethel, traditionally held around November 11. The event uses separate playing groups so that lower-rated players can compete in an appropriate section while remaining part of the same tournament day. The 2025 edition consisted of a Principal Open and a U1600 section, each played over nine FIDE-rated rapid rounds. The event attracted enough interest for the main tournament to reach capacity before play began. The Rapide de Rethel 2026 continues this format on November 11. For this edition, the playing venue moves to nearby Neuflize, where the Principal and U1600 sections are held at Salle des Fêtes Emile Lescieux. Both use a 12+3 time control and are rated for FIDE Rapid. Régis Noizet is the organizer and Jordan Akremann serves as arbiter. The club also supports and promotes tournaments elsewhere in the Ardennes and Grand Est, giving members regular opportunities to compete throughout the season.

🌱 Training & Junior Development

Chess instruction is a central part of Le Palamède’s program. At its Centre Linard base in Rethel, Wednesday sessions are divided into beginner training, improvement classes, and practice for competitive players. The club welcomes players interested in formal competition as well as those who simply want to learn and play socially. The organization has expanded its activities beyond Rethel. Current FFE information lists regular chess sessions in Rethel, Neuflize, and Saulces-Monclin, creating a wider training network across the Pays Rethélois. Junior development also extends into local schools. During the 2025/26 season, Le Palamède worked with Collège Sorbon in Rethel to establish chess activity within the school. The program concluded with an internal tournament in June 2026. Young players from Le Palamède participate in departmental, regional, and national events. In 2026, several club juniors represented the Ardennes at the French Youth Chess Championships in Albi, including players in the U8, U14 Girls, and Open B sections.

🥇 Team Chess & Competitive Development

Le Palamède participates actively in French team chess. Its leading adult team currently competes in Nationale 3, while a junior team participates in the regional youth championship. The club has produced several successful regional players during its history. Thierry Bardoux became Champagne-Ardenne Champion in 2000 and 2002, while Jean-Christophe Bouffin and Pascal Prioux won Ardennes titles. Renaud Sohier, who joined the club at age nine, became Champagne-Ardenne youth champion in both the Benjamin and Cadet categories. This combination of adult competition, junior development, internal training, and tournament organization gives Le Palamède a broad role in chess throughout the Rethel area.

📚 History & Development

The club’s history stretches back more than four decades. Although earlier chess organizations had existed in Rethel and the Ardennes, the modern Le Palamède was founded in 1985 and formally established as an independent association in 1988. Its name refers to Palamedes, the legendary Greek prince traditionally associated in European mythology with the invention of chess and several other intellectual and military arts. Over time, Le Palamède expanded from a Rethel-based club into an organization serving the wider Pays Rethélois. Today, activities take place in multiple communities, while the club works with local schools, the Comité du Jeu d’Échecs des Ardennes, the Ligue des Échecs du Grand Est, and local public institutions.
