Cambrai Échecs is a long-established chess club based in Cambrai, Nord, France. The association was officially declared on February 2, 1971 and is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under club code R59032. The club operates from 1 Rue du Temple, 59400 Cambrai, which serves as both its registered headquarters and regular playing venue. Current FFE records list 30 Licence A and 25 Licence B members, giving Cambrai Échecs a solid base of competitive and recreational players. Philippe Sauvé serves as President and is also one of the club’s principal tournament organizers and arbiters. Jean-Marc Devaux is listed by the FFE as the general club contact. Regular club sessions are held on Saturdays from 16:00 to 20:00 outside school holidays.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Cambrai Échecs has a long tradition of tournament organization, covering classical, rapid, closed norm events, internal competitions, and age-category tournaments. One of its most distinctive current projects is Les Bêtises de Cambrai, a series of closed FIDE tournaments designed to create opportunities for international title norms. In June and July 2026, the club organized Les Bêtises de Cambrai IM 2026, a nine-round round-robin tournament officially listed by the FFE among its norm events. The club has taken this project a step further for 2027, when Les Bêtises de Cambrai – GM 2027 is scheduled from February 22–26. The tournament is a nine-round closed event and appears on the official FFE list of norm tournaments. Philippe Sauvé is both organizer and arbiter. Cambrai Échecs also stages rapid events. The Rapide Cambrai in June 2026 was a seven-round tournament open to players from other clubs, while the club additionally runs internal FIDE-rated classical competitions for its own members.

👴 Veteran & Senior Chess

Veteran and Senior Plus chess is another important component of the club’s tournament program. The Open Vétérans et Seniors Plus – Cambrai 2026 takes place from December 18–20 at the club’s own premises. It is a six-round FIDE-rated classical event with a 90+30 time control and a published €600 prize fund. Because the tournament is being played directly inside the Cambrai Échecs club room, participation is deliberately limited to 39 players. The venue can accommodate 19 boards, making advance registration especially important. Philippe Sauvé serves as both tournament organizer and arbiter. The club also organized the same Veteran/Senior Plus event in 2025, confirming that this has become part of its recurring annual program.

🌱 Junior Chess & Development

Cambrai Échecs maintains activity for younger players alongside its adult competitive program. The FFE currently lists a regional youth interclub team, giving junior members an opportunity to participate in official team chess. The club also provides Saturday sessions where developing players can practice, learn and prepare for competition. The club’s structure allows players to progress from recreational chess into federation-rated competition. Its Licence B membership provides an entry point for newer or casual players, while Licence A members can participate fully in classical FFE and FIDE competitions. Cambrai Échecs also maintains a chess library designed to help members improve their play, complementing the practical training available during weekly club sessions.

🥇 Team Chess & Competitive Activity

The club participates in the French national interclub structure. Its leading team currently competes in Nationale 4, while its youth team plays in the regional youth division. FFE competition records show Cambrai competing against clubs including Lille, Douai, Arras, Marcq-en-Barœul and Noyelles-sous-Lens within its national team group. Philippe Sauvé also serves as group director within this competition structure. This combination of league play, junior competition, FIDE-rated opens and closed norm events gives Cambrai Échecs a broader competitive program than its relatively modest membership size might suggest.

📚 History & Development

Cambrai Échecs has been active for more than five decades. The association was formally established in 1971, but its tournament tradition also extends back many years. By 2010 the club was already staging the 3rd Open de Cambrai, and the fourth international edition followed in 2011. That tournament attracted 56 players, including Grandmasters and an International Master, demonstrating an early ambition to bring strong competitive chess to the city. More recently, the club has shifted part of its organizational focus toward compact FIDE-rated events, including the Veteran/Senior Plus Open and the Les Bêtises de Cambrai norm-tournament series. Today, Cambrai Échecs combines its long local history with national team competition, youth chess, FIDE-rated events and ambitious title-norm tournaments.
