A.S.D. Circolo Scacchi “Leopoldo Pilla” Città di Venafro is an active chess club based in Venafro, Molise, Italy. The association is affiliated with the Italian Chess Federation and promotes competitive chess through tournaments, team competitions, local events, and activities for players of different ages and strengths. The chess club developed within the historic Circolo Culturale “Leopoldo Pilla” in Venafro and began its modern organized activity around 2019. It takes its name from Leopoldo Pilla, the noted geologist, scientist, and Risorgimento figure who was born in Venafro in 1805. The club is led by Mario Giacona, who serves as President. The Italian Chess Federation also lists Gianluca Angelicola, Maurizio Basalico, Omero Mian, and Giuseppe Russo among the club’s current board members.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Tournament organization is one of the principal activities of Circolo Scacchi “Leopoldo Pilla”. The club has organized regional championships, national tournaments, rapid competitions, and increasingly ambitious FIDE-rated events in Venafro. Its principal event is the Torneo Internazionale di Scacchi – Venafro, held at the Venafro Palace Hotel. The international tournament has developed rapidly, attracting players from several Italian regions as well as competitors representing foreign federations. The second international edition in 2025 attracted approximately 140 players, significantly expanding the scale of the event. The tournament featured separate Open A and Open B sections and brought together experienced players, strong juniors, and international participants. The 3° Torneo Internazionale di Scacchi – Venafro 2026 takes place from December 4–6, 2026. It consists of two FIDE Standard-rated sections played over five rounds, with a total published prize fund of €2,250. The club has also organized the Molise Regional Chess Championship in Venafro. These events have helped establish the city as an increasingly important tournament destination for players from central and southern Italy.

Circolo Scacchi “Leopoldo Pilla” was created to provide a stable home for chess players and enthusiasts in Venafro. One of the club’s notable early achievements came in 2021, when Giancarlo Iadicola, representing the Venafro club, won the Molise Regional Championship. It was an important result for the developing organization and strengthened its competitive presence within regional chess.

Archaeological chess pieces discovered in the area and preserved at the city’s Museo Archeologico di Santa Chiara have traditionally been associated with some of the earliest evidence of chess in medieval Europe. The international tournament has increasingly contributed to this objective.
