SK Blauer Springer Paderborn 1926 e.V. is an established chess club based in Paderborn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The present organization was formed in 2003 through the merger of SK 1926 Paderborn and Schachfreunde Blauer Springer e.V. von 1988. Through the tradition of SK 1926 Paderborn, the club celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2026. The club has developed into a substantial chess organization with more than 140 members, almost half of whom are children and juniors. Its activities combine competitive team chess, individual tournaments, regular club evenings, structured training, and a particularly strong youth program. Regular chess activities take place at Schachzentrum Paderborn, the club’s dedicated playing venue at Klingenderstraße 22. The venue hosts training sessions on several days of the week, Friday club evenings, league matches, and other chess activities. Dr. Ulrich Rust serves as Chairman, while Wolfgang Vullhorst is Deputy Chairman and is also closely involved in the club’s major tournament projects.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

The club’s flagship tournament is the Paderborner Schachtürken-Cup, a major annual open held at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn. The event has developed into a nationally recognized chess festival and has recently attracted almost 400 participants, ranging from young U8 players to grandmasters. The 20th Paderborner Schachtürken-Cup takes place from December 27–30, 2026. Its program includes A and B Open competitions, the alternative Chess & Culture tournament, and dedicated children’s and junior competitions. The festival combines competitive chess with the distinctive setting of the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum, one of the world’s largest computer museums. The tournament’s name refers to the famous eighteenth-century chess automaton known as the Mechanical Turk or Schachtürke. The idea for a major Paderborn tournament developed through cooperation between the chess club and the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum. It was strongly promoted by former club chairman Michael W. Barz, who died before the original project could be realized. The tournament subsequently became a lasting part of his legacy. Beyond the Schachtürken-Cup, the club organizes internal competitions, training events, rapid and other tournaments. It also participates extensively in regional and North Rhine-Westphalian team competitions.

🌱 Junior Chess & Player Development

Youth development is one of the strongest elements of SK Blauer Springer Paderborn. The club provides structured chess training for children and young players from approximately six to twenty years old, with different groups adapted to experience and playing strength. Training takes place on several weekdays at Schachzentrum Paderborn. The program ranges from beginner instruction to advanced sessions for strong junior players. In addition, young members regularly compete in regional, state, and German national championships. The club fields junior teams across several age categories from U10 through U20. Its players have achieved notable results at North Rhine-Westphalian and German youth championships. This combination of regular coaching and competitive opportunities has made junior development a central part of the club’s identity.

🏅 History & Achievements

Although the current organization was created through the 2003 merger, its chess tradition reaches back to 1926. That heritage was highlighted during the club’s centenary celebrations in 2026. The anniversary year included a particularly significant national event. In June 2026, SK Blauer Springer Paderborn hosted the German Individual Rapid Chess Championships and German Women’s Rapid Chess Championship at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum on behalf of the German Chess Federation. The club also enjoyed a successful 2025/2026 team season. Its first team secured promotion to the NRW-Liga, while several other teams also achieved promotion. Alongside these competitive results, the club continues to maintain a broad community program for adult and junior players. Today, SK Blauer Springer Paderborn combines a century of Paderborn chess tradition with an active tournament program, a dedicated chess center, competitive team chess, and extensive youth development.
