Schach-Klub Nordhorn-Blanke von 1955 e.V., commonly known as SK Nordhorn-Blanke, is an established chess club in Nordhorn, Lower Saxony, Germany. Founded in 1955, the club has built a long tradition of competitive chess, tournament organization, and youth development. Its activities include league chess, individual competitions, training, and major open tournaments. The club provides regular playing and training opportunities for both adults and juniors. Adult players meet on Monday evenings, while several sessions are available for young players during the week. Its current playing venue is the Ludwig-Povel-Schule in Nordhorn. SK Nordhorn-Blanke is particularly well known for organizing the Nordhorner Schachfestival, one of the club's long-running tournament traditions. The 2026 edition is the 37th Nordhorner Schachfestival and, for the twelfth time, is being held as the Andreas-Schaar-Gedenkturnier. The tournament forms part of the Niedersächsischer Schachverband Grand Prix series. The 2026 festival offers separate A and B tournaments and uses a five-round Swiss system. The A tournament is both FIDE Elo and DWZ rated, while the B tournament is DWZ rated. Therefore, the event provides competitive opportunities for players across different rating levels. The club also hosts regional competitions and has supported events such as the Grafschaft Bentheim individual championship. Tournament organization has been a consistent part of the club's identity. In recent editions, the Andreas Schaar Memorial has attracted more than 100 players, including titled players and strong juniors. Moreover, the club continues to combine competitive tournament chess with a strong local and regional community focus.

🌱 Youth Development

Youth chess has played an important role in SK Nordhorn-Blanke for decades. The club runs several weekly junior training sessions and has also maintained specific training opportunities for girls. The Niedersächsischer Schachverband has highlighted the club's continuous youth work and its particular commitment to supporting girls and women in chess. This tradition is closely connected with Andreas Schaar, who spent more than 30 years in the club and its leadership. He devoted much of his work to youth training and junior teams. Following his death in November 2011 at the age of 49, the club renamed its major annual tournament in his memory. The first Andreas Schaar Memorial was held in 2012.

SK Nordhorn-Blanke has competed successfully at a high level in German team chess. One of the club's major sporting achievements came in 2012, when its first team won promotion from the Oberliga to the 2. Bundesliga West. The promotion represented an important milestone in the club's competitive history. The club has continued to maintain a strong presence in Lower Saxony chess. Its combination of league competition, youth development, tournament organization, and volunteer work has also received recognition from the regional federation. In 2022, the Niedersächsischer Schachverband awarded honors to Hartmut Stinn and Fabian Stotyn for their contribution to the club and chess in the region.
