Schachclub Heusenstamm e.V. (SC Heusenstamm) is a chess club based in Heusenstamm, Hesse, Germany. Founded in 1982, the club continues a much older local chess tradition that can be traced back to the 1880s. SC Heusenstamm is affiliated with the Hessischer Schachverband and combines league competition, youth development, club tournaments, training, and large-scale open tournament organization from its base in Heusenstamm. The club runs regular competitive and social chess for its members. Its activities include league matches, youth training, rapid and classical events, club competitions, and participation by members in tournaments throughout Germany and abroad. In addition, SC Heusenstamm organizes the Heusenstamm Sparkassen Open, which has developed since 2014 into one of the largest recurring open chess events in Hesse and attracts several hundred players each year. Dr. Rudolf Benninger serves as Chairman of SC Heusenstamm, while Hans D. Post is the principal operational contact for the club’s major tournament activity. Post manages the Heusenstamm Sparkassen Open and its tournament communication. During 2026, the club expanded its youth work and prepared a new youth league team while continuing its extensive tournament program. Its flagship event is the upcoming 12th Heusenstamm Sparkassen Open, scheduled for November 19–22, 2026.

📜 History and Development

SC Heusenstamm was established in 1982, although organized chess in Heusenstamm existed long before the modern club. The city’s documented chess tradition reaches back to the nineteenth century. Over the following decades, the club developed a strong competitive identity. Its first team progressed through the German league structure and eventually reached the 1. Bundesliga, a major achievement for a relatively small local chess club. More recently, the club has adjusted its competitive structure. After the 2025–26 season, departures from the squad meant that SC Heusenstamm decided not to continue its Oberliga team for the following season. At the same time, the club increased its focus on youth development and planned a new junior team.

♜ Team and Youth Chess

League chess has traditionally played an important role at SC Heusenstamm. The club has fielded multiple teams at different levels and has competed as high as Germany’s national Bundesliga system. For the 2026–27 season, the club reorganized its team structure after several player departures. The former second team became the leading senior team, while a new youth squad was prepared for league competition. Youth development has therefore become an increasingly important priority. Training is held at the club’s Eisenbahnstraße 11 base in Heusenstamm. The program gives young players regular coaching and a route into competitive team chess. In September 2026, the club reported a strong start for its new junior league activity. This renewed youth program complements the club’s long-standing tradition of maintaining competitive senior teams.

🏆 Heusenstamm Sparkassen Open

The Heusenstamm Sparkassen Open began in 2014 with 134 participants. Since then, it has expanded dramatically and become SC Heusenstamm’s flagship tournament. The event is distinguished by its large playing field, international participation, and modern tournament presentation. From its first edition, the organizers used large electronic displays instead of traditional paper result sheets. Over the years, the tournament has welcomed strong titled players alongside hundreds of club competitors. The 2025 edition attracted 474 players from 26 nations across three continents. The field included four Grandmasters, six International Masters, sixteen FIDE Masters, and five Candidate Masters. FM Paul Hinrichs won the A-Open. The tournament is directed by Hans D. Post, who also manages its dedicated website and player communication. An experienced international arbiter team supports the event each year.

🌟 12th Heusenstamm Sparkassen Open 2026

The 12th Heusenstamm Sparkassen Open is scheduled for November 19–22, 2026 at the Kultur- und Sportzentrum Martinsee in Heusenstamm. By mid-September, approximately 300 players had already registered for the A- and B-Open sections alone. The festival consists of three competitions. The A-Open is open to players with DWZ/Elo 1800 or higher and carries a guaranteed prize fund of €6,200. The B-Open is for players below DWZ/Elo 2000 and offers €1,800. In addition, the J-Open provides a seven-round tournament for players under 14 with €500 in guaranteed prizes. Both adult sections use seven-round Swiss formats with DWZ and FIDE Elo rating. The event therefore combines high-level competitive chess with rating-category prizes, team prizes, junior opportunities, and broad access for club players.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Dr. Rudolf Benninger is the long-serving Chairman of SC Heusenstamm. The club’s official board also lists Boris Senatov as Second Chairman, Stefan Solonar as Youth Director, Roland Schreiner as Treasurer, and Maksim Kuchta as Secretary. For the Sparkassen Open, however, Hans D. Post is the most useful operational contact. He serves as Tournament Director, manages registrations and tournament communications, and maintains the event’s online infrastructure. This combination of permanent club leadership and a dedicated tournament organization team allows SC Heusenstamm to operate both as a local chess club and as the organizer of a large international open.
