⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The tournament uses the Swiss System over seven rounds.

When digital clocks are available, each player receives 90 minutes for the game plus a 30-second increment after every move from move one.

However, the regulations also provide an alternative for analog clocks.

Swiss-Manager handles the pairings.

Default Time

The default time is 60 minutes.

Therefore, a player who arrives more than one hour after the scheduled start risks losing the game by default.

Requested Byes

Players may request an absent bye for any round.

However, requested byes receive no points.

Therefore, the tournament does not use half-point byes.

Tiebreaks

If players finish level on points, the organizers use the following order:

1. Direct encounter
2. Buchholz with the lowest result excluded
3. Buchholz without cuts
4. Sonneborn-Berger
5. Most games played with Black; a walkover counts as White
6. Drawing of lots

The official regulations publish a total cash prize fund of R$5,000 (approximately $980).

Overall Prizes

These ten Overall prizes total R$4,200.

Additional Category Awards

The regulations publish another R$800 in category cash awards, bringing the complete advertised cash fund to R$5,000.

Entry Fees

Registration on Tournament Day

Players who register on the day pay an additional R$50 (approximately $10).

Therefore:

The organizers will not accept new entries after Round 1 has started.

Payment Confirmation

After the player submits the registration information, the organizer sends a payment code to the telephone number entered on the form.

The registration becomes confirmed after successful payment.

Refunds

Paid entry fees are non-refundable.

Therefore, players should confirm their availability before completing payment.

CBX Membership

Because the event receives CBX Standard rating, each player must have their CBX annual membership paid and valid for the Standard format.

The tournament venue lies in the Centro Histórico, one of Porto Alegre’s best-connected districts.

By Metro / Trensurb

Mercado Station is the most useful Trensurb station for the historic center.

The Trensurb system connects Mercado with Porto Alegre’s northern districts, the airport area, Canoas, São Leopoldo, and Novo Hamburgo.

Therefore, players staying elsewhere along the Trensurb corridor can reach the center without driving.

From Salgado Filho International Airport

Salgado Filho International Airport (POA) is Porto Alegre’s main airport.

The city’s public-transport network links the airport area with the Trensurb system and central Porto Alegre. The Aeroporto–Mercado corridor provides access toward the Centro Histórico.

However, service arrangements around the airport connection have changed during infrastructure recovery in recent years. Therefore, arriving players should verify the live Trensurb and airport connection on the day of travel.

Taxi and rideshare services provide a simpler direct alternative from the terminal to Rua Vigário José Inácio.

From Porto Alegre Bus Station

Porto Alegre’s main interstate bus terminal stands close to Rodoviária Trensurb Station.

From there, players can continue one stop toward Mercado or use local transport toward the tournament venue.

The club does not publish dedicated private tournament parking in the 2026 regulations.

Electronic Devices

The tournament applies strict electronic-device rules.

Players may not carry or use:

• mobile phones;
• headphones;
• Bluetooth devices;
• smartwatches.

A first violation results in loss of the game.

A repeat violation results in exclusion from the tournament.

Spectators may not circulate inside the playing area while carrying electronic devices. However, the organizer allows photography during the first five minutes, in line with its published rules.

External spectators may not record games.

Appeals

The tournament will appoint an Appeals Committee with:

• three full members;
• two substitutes.

A player must submit an appeal in writing within five minutes after the end of their game.

The appeal deposit is:

R$200 (approximately $40)

The organizer refunds the deposit if the appeal succeeds.

Dress Code

Players may not wear sleeveless shirts.

Alcohol

The regulations prohibit carrying, consuming, or using alcoholic beverages during the event.

Juniors

Minor players must either:

• remain accompanied by a legal guardian; or
• carry appropriate authorization to participate independently.

They must also carry an identity document.

Image and Game Publication

By participating, players and authorized spectators consent to the use of their name, voice, and image in printed and electronic promotional material connected with Metrópole Xadrez Clube.

Players also authorize the club to publish and use their games through digital channels.

2025 Edition

The 4ª Copa Francisco Trois 2025 took place from December 5–7, 2025.

That edition attracted 48 players and used a five-round format.

FM Felipe Kubiaki Menna Barreto won the tournament with 4.5/5, while Rodrigo da Silva Borges, Anderson Donay Martins, and Igor Ferreira da Silva each finished on 4/5.

The 2026 edition therefore expands the competition from five to seven rounds and raises the published prize fund from R$1,450 in 2025 to R$5,000 in 2026.

Metrópole Xadrez Clube

Metrópole Xadrez Clube was founded in 1937 and remains one of Porto Alegre’s long-established chess institutions.

The club runs classical, rapid, blitz, school, and open competitions throughout the year. Moreover, it maintains its permanent headquarters in the Centro Histórico.
