Chess Club Arda – Kardzhali (Шахматен клуб „Арда“ – Кърджали) is a chess organization based in Kardzhali, Bulgaria. The club was founded in 2021 by Dr. Nedim Ismailov. Its mission is to develop chess throughout Kardzhali Province and the wider Eastern Rhodopes. The club promotes competitive chess, supports local players, and creates opportunities for children, adults, and experienced tournament competitors. Arda organizes FIDE-rated Standard, Rapid, and Blitz tournaments, community events, youth competitions, and municipal chess festivals. Moreover, the club regularly cooperates with municipalities across the Kardzhali region. Its activities have reached Kardzhali, Ardino, Momchilgrad, and neighboring communities. Youth development remains an important priority, while international events increasingly bring Bulgarian and foreign players to the region. Dr. Nedim Ismailov serves as Founder and Chairman of Chess Club Arda. He also directs the club’s principal tournaments. In 2025, Arda and the Municipality of Kardzhali launched the International Chess Festival Kardzhali with a strong international field. The club expanded the project again in 2026. The upcoming International Chess Festival – Kardzhali 2026 will take place from November 6–8 and offers a €4,000 prize fund.📜 Development of Chess Club Arda
Chess Club Arda was established in February 2021. The organization brought together chess enthusiasts from Kardzhali and surrounding towns in the Eastern Rhodopes. From the beginning, the club focused on more than regular club play. It aimed to organize tournaments, improve player development, encourage youth chess, and build cooperation with other chess organizations. The club gradually developed a regional tournament network. Therefore, its activities now reach several municipalities across Kardzhali Province. Arda also works closely with local authorities. This cooperation has helped the club secure playing facilities and organize larger events with stronger prize funds and international rating.🎓 Youth and Regional Chess
Youth chess plays an important role in Arda’s program. The club works to introduce children to competitive chess while also providing FIDE-rated opportunities for stronger juniors. In May 2026, Arda helped organize the youth Rapid tournament Ardino on the Move. The event was designed for players under 16 and received FIDE Rapid rating. The club returned to Ardino in August for the traditional Mayor’s Cup during the Days of Ardino 2026. That competition used seven Rapid rounds at 15+5. Arda also supports school and community events throughout the region. As a result, the club connects grassroots chess with a pathway toward national and international competition.🏆 International Tournament Activity
Arda’s international tournament program has grown substantially since 2024. In December 2024, the club organized an international tournament in Kardzhali with support from the municipality and Bulgarian chess authorities. The competition attracted 96 players from Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, and Ukraine. The next major step came with the 1st International Chess Festival Kardzhali 2025. The festival combined Blitz, Rapid, and youth Classical chess. Its Rapid field included several Grandmasters and International Masters. GM Radoslav Dimitrov won both the Blitz and Rapid competitions after tie-breaks. The 2025 festival also offered a combined prize fund of BGN 15,000. Consequently, it established Kardzhali as a more ambitious destination on the regional international chess calendar.🌟 Kardzhali International Chess Festival 2026
The International Chess Festival – Kardzhali 2026 is scheduled for November 6–8, 2026 at the Kardzhali Youth Center. Chess Club Arda and the Municipality of Kardzhali are the official organizers. Dr. Nedim Ismailov serves as Tournament Director. The main Classical competition will use a seven-round Swiss system. Players receive 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. In addition, an Open Blitz tournament is scheduled for November 7. Both competitions are intended for international FIDE rating. The festival advertises a total prize fund of €4,000. Furthermore, the organizers plan to use approximately 30 electronic boards for live game transmission. IA Miroslav Mitev serves as Chief Arbiter. The club’s board also includes experienced local chess figures. Its wider network includes players, organizers, arbiters, and volunteers from several communities in Kardzhali Province. In September 2026, Kyamran Bilyal, a representative of Chess Club Arda, officially received the FIDE Arbiter title. This achievement strengthened the club’s technical capacity for internationally rated tournaments. Arda also maintains its own official website.
