♟️ About Assembleia Figueirense
Assembleia Figueirense is a historic cultural, recreational, and sports association based in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. Founded on December 15, 1839, it is one of the city’s long-established civic institutions. Chess has formed part of the association’s activities for generations, with references to the game appearing in its internal regulations as early as 1865. Today, the association is best known in international chess for promoting the Festival Internacional de Xadrez da Figueira da Foz – Sabir Ali. The association combines chess with a much broader cultural program. Its activities include music, theater, guided cultural visits, lectures, community events, and other recreational initiatives. Within chess, however, its flagship project is clearly the Figueira da Foz International Chess Festival. The event brings together grandmasters, international masters, developing players, and local competitors. Moreover, the festival works closely with the Portuguese Chess Federation, local authorities, hotels, sponsors, and international chess partners. Mário Manuel de Carvalho Póvoa Leitão has served as President of Assembleia Figueirense since March 2026. He is also Tournament Director of the 20th Figueira da Foz International Chess Festival 2026. Meanwhile, Miguel Babo remains the creator and principal operational figure behind the festival and serves on its Organizing Committee. The 2026 edition is scheduled for November 8–15 and has already attracted more than 70 players from 25 countries, including numerous Grandmasters and International Masters.📜 Chess Heritage at Assembleia Figueirense
Chess has deep roots within Assembleia Figueirense. Historical records show that the association already provided space for chess in the nineteenth century. Competitive activity became much more structured during the twentieth century. Assembleia Figueirense fielded teams in regional and national competition and achieved notable results, including participation in Portugal’s national team leagues. The modern international festival began with Miguel Babo. In 2004, he presented a detailed proposal to Assembleia Figueirense for a major international tournament in the city. The association approved the project and became its promoter. Therefore, the first Festival Internacional de Xadrez da Figueira da Foz established a model that continued across subsequent editions.🏆 Figueira da Foz International Chess Festival
The Festival Internacional de Xadrez da Figueira da Foz has become the association’s flagship chess event. Across its first 18 editions, the festival welcomed 944 tournament entries from 45 countries. Those fields included dozens of Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, and leading women players. The tournament also developed strong links with Figueira da Foz hotels and local institutions. This cooperation helped create an international event that combines competitive chess with the city’s tourism infrastructure. Over the years, the festival has attracted many established international players while also providing norm opportunities and experience for younger competitors.🌟 19th Festival – 2025
The 19th Figueira da Foz International Chess Festival – Sabir Ali took place in November 2025. Registration reached the organizer’s announced capacity well before the tournament began. The event once again attracted a strong international field. GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy of Ukraine won the tournament. Indian GM Harikrishnan finished second, while Poland’s Radoslaw Psyk took third place. Portuguese IM André Sousa finished seventh and was the highest-placed Portuguese player. The festival also included educational activity. Before the main tournament, renowned Grandmaster and trainer Elizbar Ubilava presented a public chess masterclass at Assembleia Figueirense.🌍 20th Figueira da Foz – Sabir Ali 2026
The 20th Figueira da Foz International Chess Festival – Sabir Ali is scheduled for November 8–15, 2026 at Sweet Atlantic Hotel. The tournament will use a nine-round Swiss system. Its time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 additional minutes, with a 30-second increment from move one. As of September 2026, more than 70 players from 25 countries had already registered. The field included 12 Grandmasters and nine International Masters, together with several other titled players. Chess-Results identifies Assembleia Figueirense and Miguel Babo as the organizers. Mário Póvoa Leitão serves as Tournament Director, while IA Carlos Dias is Chief Arbiter. The event is also part of the Portugal Chess Tour, coordinated by the Portuguese Chess Federation.🏛️ Organization and Leadership
The current governing bodies of Assembleia Figueirense were elected on March 21, 2026 for a two-year term. Mário Manuel de Carvalho Póvoa Leitão serves as President of the Board. Renato Cláudio Ferreira Simões is Vice President, while Manuel Rodrigues Azenha serves as Treasurer. For the International Chess Festival, Miguel Babo remains the most useful operational contact. He created the event concept in 2004 and continues to represent the organizing team. This structure combines institutional continuity through Assembleia Figueirense with Babo’s long-term tournament experience.
