♟️ About Farsala Chess Club

Farsala Chess Club (Σκακιστική Λέσχη Φαρσάλων) is a chess organization based in Farsala, Thessaly, Greece. The club operates within the structure of the Hellenic Chess Federation and represents Farsala in regional individual and team competitions. Its formal federation registration dates to October 3, 2021, although organized chess activity in Farsala predates that registration. The club maintains its permanent base at Patroklou 3 in central Farsala.

The club combines competitive chess, youth development, scholastic tournaments, team competition, rated Opens, and community chess events. It regularly cooperates with the Municipality of Farsala, the Region of Thessaly, and the Thessaly chess committee. Youth chess is especially important to its program. The club has organized major regional school championships and also supports its young players at Greek national scholastic events.

Dimosthenis Derekas serves as President of Farsala Chess Club and is also Vice President of the Thessaly regional chess committee. He is a FIDE-rated arbiter and one of the club’s principal operational contacts. In 2026, Farsala Chess Club competed successfully in the Thessaly team championship, organized youth Rapid chess during Marmarini Fest, and prepared its flagship 9th Farsala Halva Festival Individual Tournament, scheduled for November 12–15.

📜 Development and Local Chess

Farsala has built an increasingly active chess community over recent years. A new local chess facility was inaugurated in 2019, helping provide a regular base for players and young students.

The club later entered the formal Hellenic Chess Federation structure. Its official registration is recorded from 2021, and the Greek federation now lists Farsala Chess Club among the recognized clubs in Thessaly.

The association works closely with local institutions. In particular, the Municipality of Farsala and Region of Thessaly have supported several tournaments and scholastic activities.

This cooperation has allowed the club to stage events that reach beyond its own membership and attract players from throughout Thessaly.

🎓 Youth and School Chess

Youth chess is one of the strongest parts of the club’s activity.

In April 2025, Farsala Chess Club helped organize the Thessaly Individual School Chess Championships together with the Municipality of Farsala, the Region of Thessaly, and the regional chess committee.

Approximately 230 students took part across kindergarten, primary-school, middle-school, and high-school categories. The competition gave young players from across Thessaly an opportunity to compete in a large organized event.

Farsala players also participated in the 2025 Greek National School Chess Championship. Twelve young players connected with the club competed at the national event in Thessaloniki.

The club continued its youth activity in 2026. On July 21, it organized the 2nd Youth Rapid at Marmarini Fest, a five-round competition using a 10+5 time control.

♜ Team Chess in Thessaly

Farsala Chess Club also competes in regional team championships.

In the 2026 Thessaly Team Championship, the club finished third in a six-team field. It scored six match points and 34.5 individual game points.

The competition placed Farsala behind Larissa Chess Club and Volos Chess Academy while ahead of teams from Volos, Almyros, and Agria.

Team competition provides another development pathway for the club’s players. It also connects Farsala with the wider competitive chess network across Thessaly.

🏆 Farsala Open Tournaments

The club regularly organizes nationally and internationally rated Classical tournaments.

In February 2025, the 4th Farsala Chess Club Open was played over three Sundays at the club’s local venue. The six-round Swiss tournament used a Classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move and counted for both national and international rating.

Later that year, the club staged the 8th Farsala Halva Festival Individual Tournament from October 24–27.

That tournament consisted of seven rounds and two rating groups. Giorgos Bolas served as Tournament Director, while the club’s board formed the organizing committee.

The Halva Festival series has therefore become the club’s principal annual international-rated competition.

🌟 9th Farsala Halva Festival Tournament 2026

The 9th Farsala Halva Festival Individual Tournament is scheduled for November 12–15, 2026 in Farsala.

Chess-Results officially identifies Farsala Chess Club as the organizer. Giorgos Bolas serves as Tournament Director, while Dimosthenis Derekas is Chief Arbiter.

The tournament will use a seven-round Swiss system. Games are played at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.

Both Greek national rating and FIDE international rating will be calculated. The starting list already includes experienced Greek players and FIDE-titled competitors.

The event continues the club’s cooperation with the wider Farsala Halva Festival and strengthens the connection between chess and one of the city’s major annual cultural celebrations.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Dimosthenis Derekas is the current President of Farsala Chess Club. He also serves as Vice President of the regional Thessaly chess committee.

Derekas is closely involved in the club’s tournaments and youth activities. He serves as Chief Arbiter for the 2026 Halva Festival tournament and is the primary contact published by the Hellenic Chess Federation.

Giorgos Bolas plays another important operational role. He has repeatedly served as Tournament Director for the club’s FIDE-rated Open and Halva Festival competitions.

Together with the club’s board and volunteers, they manage a program that now includes regional championships, youth tournaments, rated Opens, team competition, and large scholastic events.
