European Rapid, Blitz and Fischer Random (Chess960) Chess Championships 2026 take place from December 4 to December 9, 2026 in Portimão, Algarve, Portugal. Competitive play runs from December 5 to December 8 at Portimão Arena.
The festival brings together three separate European individual championships. The programme starts with the 11-round European Rapid Championship, followed by the 13-round European Blitz Championship and the 9-round European Fischer Random (Chess960) Championship.
The championships form part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Portuguese Chess Federation. Moreover, the organizer guarantees a combined €40,000 prize fund, while participation is open to eligible players from ECU member federations without rating or title restrictions.

Players rated over 2600, as well as women rated over 2400, are exempt from the relevant Rapid and Blitz entry fees according to the November 1 rating list.
For Fischer Random, the Standard rating is used when determining the exemption.

Portimão Arena is a modern multi-purpose venue inside the city’s Parque de Feiras e Exposições.
Its main event hall can accommodate major sporting events and large-scale competitions. Therefore, all three European championships are held at the same venue.

⚖️ Appeals
A protest against a decision of the Chief Arbiter must be submitted in writing within one hour after the end of the relevant game.
The appeal must be submitted by the player and accompanied by a deposit of:

Federação Portuguesa de Xadrez (FPX), or Portuguese Chess Federation, is the national governing body for chess in Portugal. Founded on January 22, 1927, the federation represents Portuguese chess nationally and internationally and has held public-sports-utility status since 1993. FPX is affiliated with the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the European Chess Union (ECU) and is also represented within the Portuguese Olympic Committee, the Sports Confederation of Portugal, the Ibero-American Chess Federation, and the Lusophone Chess Confederation.
FPX manages a broad national competition system covering individual and team chess, youth championships, women’s events, amateur competitions, rapid and blitz, Chess960, adapted chess, veterans’ competitions, the Portuguese Cup, and other national titles. The federation also coordinates international representation, player development, coach and arbiter structures, and the Portugal Chess Tour, which connects leading open tournaments across the country. Youth development is an important priority, with national championships, training camps, club-development programs, and preparation for European and World Youth events.
Dominic Cross is President of the Portuguese Chess Federation for the 2024–2027 term, his third consecutive mandate as head of the federation. FPX has maintained an especially active program in 2026, including national championships, international opens, elite-player development under newly appointed National Technical Director GM Mikhail Kobalia, and preparations for one of its largest international hosting assignments: the European Rapid, Blitz and Fischer Random (Chess960) Chess Championships 2026 in Portimão.
📜 History and National Role
The Portuguese Chess Federation was created in 1927 and has developed into the central administrative and sporting authority for organized chess in Portugal. Its responsibilities extend from grassroots club chess to national championships and Portuguese participation in major international competitions.
FPX works with clubs and regional chess associations throughout the country. Its competition structure includes national team divisions, the Taça de Portugal, individual championships, youth categories, women’s chess, rapid and blitz competitions, amateur championships, veterans’ chess, and specialized events.
The federation will reach its 100th anniversary in January 2027, making the 2026–2027 period particularly significant for Portuguese chess and its international activities.
🎓 Youth and High-Performance Development
Player development is a major part of FPX’s current strategy. The federation organizes national youth championships and training camps while selecting and preparing players for European and World competitions.
In March 2026, FPX appointed GM Mikhail Kobalia, a FIDE Senior Trainer, as National Technical Director. His role includes overseeing the federation’s high-performance structure and working directly with Portugal’s strongest developing players.
FPX also promotes club-based development through its Training Clubs program and national youth competitions. These initiatives help connect local chess instruction with national championship pathways and international representation.
🏆 National Competitions and Portugal Chess Tour
The Portugal Chess Tour is one of FPX’s principal national and international competition projects. It brings together established open tournaments organized around Portugal under federation coordination.
The 2025/2026 Portugal Chess Tour consisted of 15 tournaments, including events in Leça, Maia, Lagos, Figueira da Foz, Pombal, Braga, Coimbra, Silves, and Famalicão. The series combines Classical and Rapid events, while many Classical tournaments use nine-round formats designed to provide opportunities for international title norms.
In September 2026, FPX also completed its 2025/2026 Portuguese Individual Championship in Maia. IM André Sousa won the national title with 6.5/9, securing his seventh Portuguese championship.
🌍 International Chess Activity
FPX represents Portugal within FIDE and ECU and manages Portuguese participation in major European and World championships. The federation also works within the Ibero-American Chess Federation and Lusophone Chess Confederation, extending its international relationships beyond European competition.
Portugal has increasingly hosted international opens and official championship events. FPX combines these activities with national-team preparation, youth international participation, and cooperation with international chess organizations.
The federation’s international role expanded further in 2026 with preparations to host the European Rapid, Blitz, and Fischer Random championships in the Algarve.

The European Rapid, Blitz and Fischer Random (Chess960) Chess Championships 2026 will take place in Portimão, Portugal, from December 4–9, with competition scheduled from December 5–8.
The European Chess Union officially identifies the Portuguese Chess Federation as the technical organizer, with the championships conducted under the auspices of the ECU. IO Dominic Cross serves as Tournament Director.
The European Rapid Championship will be played on December 5–6 over 11 rounds at 15+10. The European Blitz Championship follows on December 7 with 13 rounds at 3+2, while the European Fischer Random Championship takes place on December 8 over nine rounds at 10+5.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership
Dominic Cross leads FPX as President for the 2024–2027 mandate. He was elected for a third consecutive term in June 2024.
The federation’s current Board also includes Paulo Felizes, Mário Rui Correia, Marta Leite, António Bravo, Agostinho Roxo, and Margarida Coimbra. However, day-to-day sporting development is supported by specialist technical structures, arbiters, coaches, and administrative staff.
FPX’s headquarters are located in Lisbon, from where the federation manages national administration, registrations, competition regulations, international representation, and communication with clubs and players.
