♟️ About Puerto Rico Chess Academy

Puerto Rico Chess Academy (PRCA) is a nonprofit chess organization, academy, and tournament organizer based in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Founded in 2016, its central mission is to develop chess as an educational tool for children, young people, and adults. PRCA combines formal chess instruction with regular competitive opportunities and has become an active organizer of scholastic, amateur, FIDE-rated, rapid, blitz, and international tournaments across Puerto Rico. The Academy offers structured programs from beginner through intermediate and competitive levels. Its coaching team includes FIDE-qualified instructors, arbiters, titled players, and licensed chess coaches. In 2026, PRCA operates regular programs in Bayamón at Centro Teológico El Caballero de la Cruz and Centro Comunal de Lomas Verdes, as well as a dedicated online women’s chess program. The organization also works with schools, municipal recreation departments, the Puerto Rico Chess Federation, and other institutions to create additional tournament and training opportunities. IA Cristóbal Vega Adorno is the current President of Puerto Rico Chess Academy and one of its principal instructors and tournament organizers. He holds the titles of International Arbiter, FIDE Instructor, and FIDE School Instructor. PRCA maintained an extensive program during 2026, including the 2nd PRCA IRT Chess Classic, the III José Celso Barbosa International Chess Tournament, training programs, amateur events, and scholastic activities. Its upcoming calendar includes the 14th Carlos Ortiz Chess Tournament on October 24, 2026, followed by further blitz, rapid, and festival events in November and December.

🎓 Chess Education and Training

Education is at the center of Puerto Rico Chess Academy’s work. The organization provides a progressive curriculum covering basic chess, tactics, strategy, attacking patterns, endgames, and opening preparation. Its coaching staff includes Francisco J. Cruz Arce, Senior Lead Instructor and FIDE Instructor; IA Cristóbal Vega Adorno; WCM Keyshla M. Vega Jiménez; FM Mike Fellman; FM Sebastián J. Toro Cruz; and other qualified instructors. During 2026, Cristóbal Vega leads courses at Centro Teológico El Caballero de la Cruz in Bayamón on Mondays and Wednesdays. Francisco J. Cruz Arce directs beginner and intermediate programs at Lomas Verdes, while WCM Keyshla Vega Jiménez leads a dedicated online program for female players. These activities allow PRCA to combine recreational chess education with preparation for rated competition.

♟️ FIDE-Rated and Amateur Chess

Puerto Rico Chess Academy organizes regular opportunities for players to obtain and develop official ratings. The 2nd PRCA IRT Chess Classic ran from May 7 to June 4, 2026 at Centro Comunal Lomas Verdes in Bayamón. The tournament was approved by the Puerto Rico Chess Federation and valid for FIDE rating. PRCA also maintains recurring Amateur Rapid and Amateur Blitz competitions. These smaller events provide accessible rated chess for developing players and complement the Academy’s longer classical tournaments. The organization’s current calendar continues through the end of 2026 with the 7th PRCA Amateur Rapid Chess on December 14 and 7th PRCA Amateur Blitz Chess on December 17.

🌍 José Celso Barbosa International Chess Tournament

One of PRCA’s most important international projects is the José Celso Barbosa International Chess Tournament. The third edition was held from July 20–27, 2026 at Centro Comunal Jardines de Caparra in Bayamón. Puerto Rico Chess Academy organized the event under the direction of Francisco J. Cruz Arce, with support from the Municipality of Bayamón, the Puerto Rico Chess Federation, the Confederation of Chess for America, and the FIDE Open Aid Project. IA Cristóbal Vega Adorno served as Chief Arbiter, assisted by FA Rinelly M. Comas Colón and NA Keyshla M. Vega Jiménez. The tournament continued the Academy’s objective of giving Puerto Rican players access to stronger international opposition while promoting the island as a destination for international chess.

🏆 Carlos Ortiz Chess Tournament

The Torneo de Ajedrez Carlos Ortiz is another established event in Puerto Rico Chess Academy’s calendar. The 14th edition is scheduled for October 24, 2026 at Plaza Centro Mall in Caguas and is jointly organized by Plaza Centro Mall and Puerto Rico Chess Academy. The festival is divided into Open, U18, U16, U14, U12, and U10 categories, allowing both experienced players and young competitors to participate within appropriate sections. Each tournament consists of five Swiss-system rapid rounds using a time control of 10 minutes plus two seconds per move. Participation is limited to 32 players per category. IA Cristóbal Vega Adorno serves as Tournament Director and Chief Arbiter. The arbiter team also includes FA Rinelly M. Comas Colón, NA Keyshla M. Vega Jiménez, NA Juan Berrios González, and other Puerto Rican officials.

🌱 Community and Scholastic Chess

PRCA also works to make chess available beyond traditional tournament players. Its activities have included scholastic competitions, school partnerships, community chess programs, and events organized with municipal recreation departments. In 2025, for example, the Academy supported the 31st INTER Metro Student Chess Tournament and co-organized the 2nd Baldwin School of Puerto Rico Scholastic Chess Tournament. Regular community programs in Bayamón provide another entry point for players who are new to organized chess. This combination of education, tournament organization, institutional partnerships, and community activity allows Puerto Rico Chess Academy to serve players from their first lessons through international and FIDE-rated competition.
