♟️ About Delegación Sevillana de Ajedrez – Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez
The Delegación Sevillana de Ajedrez (DSA) is the provincial chess delegation of the Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez (FADA) for Seville, Andalusia, Spain. Based in central Seville, it coordinates official chess activity across the province and works with affiliated clubs, players, arbiters, schools, municipalities, and tournament organizers. Rather than functioning as an independent chess federation, the DSA forms part of the regional FADA structure and manages the provincial competition system within Seville. Its responsibilities cover the Seville Provincial Team League, individual championships, rapid and blitz championships, veterans competitions, youth events, school chess, arbiter appointments, technical development, and a large network of local tournaments. The delegation works with clubs throughout Seville Province, including organizations in Seville city, Alcalá de Guadaíra, Los Palacios, Dos Hermanas, Gines, Camas, Pilas, Utrera, Écija, and other municipalities. Its largest international project is the historic Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez “Ciudad de Sevilla”, one of Spain’s longest-running major open tournaments. IO José Antonio Fernández Rodríguez is the current Provincial Delegate of the Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez in Seville and the principal operational contact for the organization. He also serves as Tournament Director of the International Chessopen Ciudad de Sevilla. The delegation maintained an extensive program throughout 2026, including provincial league competition, youth championships, rapid and blitz events, municipal chess, and the 51st Sevilla Open. It is now preparing the 52nd Abierto Internacional Ciudad de Sevilla, scheduled for January 8–16, 2027 at FIBES.🏛️ Provincial Chess Structure
The Delegación Sevillana de Ajedrez coordinates official competition for a large network of chess clubs throughout Seville Province. The current leadership is headed by José Antonio Fernández Rodríguez – Provincial Delegate. Rocío Moreno Montaño serves as First Vice Delegate for sporting matters, while José Manuel Gómez Solís is Second Vice Delegate for economic affairs. Joaquín Expósito Portillo serves as Secretary and Ana de Dios Dorado as Treasurer. Additional areas cover institutional relations, technical development and youth chess, arbiters and regulations, competitions, school and women’s chess, and social and youth programs. This structure allows the delegation to manage both competitive administration and development projects across the province.♜ Provincial Team Chess
The Liga Provincial por Equipos de Sevilla is one of the delegation’s principal annual competitions. For 2026, the DSA organized the provincial league across Preferente, Primera, Segunda, and Tercera categories. At the same time, leading Seville clubs competed in the higher divisions managed by the Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez, including División de Honor and Primera Andaluza. The provincial system involves a broad range of clubs, from large organizations with several teams to smaller municipal and community clubs. Consequently, it provides competitive opportunities for experienced players, developing juniors, and amateur competitors throughout the season. The delegation also organizes the Copa de Sevilla por Equipos and a separate Copa Infantil, extending team competition beyond the regular league.🎓 Youth, School and Development Chess
Youth chess is a major component of the DSA calendar. The delegation organizes the Campeonato de Sevilla for U8, U10, U12, U14, and U16 players, with the strongest competitors progressing toward Andalusian championships. The 2026 program also included the Juegos Deportivos Municipales de Sevilla, staged in cooperation with the Instituto Municipal de Deportes. Competition days were held in February, March, and April, including a final event at the Setas de Sevilla. In addition, the delegation manages scholarships connected with Andalusian youth championships, technical-development activities, and arbiter education. During 2026, its official circulars included new arbiter appointments and an online arbiter-training course. The youth program therefore combines competition, education, qualification pathways, and tournament-officiating development.🌟 Abierto Internacional Ciudad de Sevilla
The Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez “Ciudad de Sevilla” is the delegation’s flagship international tournament and one of the most established events on the Spanish chess calendar. The 51st edition took place from January 9–17, 2026 at FIBES – Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Sevilla. The nine-round FIDE-rated Open offered €10,500 in cash prizes and attracted a record field of 356 players representing 44 nationalities, including numerous grandmasters and international masters. American IM Liam Putnam won the tournament with 8/9, sharing the highest score with GM Praveen Balakrishnan and taking the title on tiebreak. José Antonio Fernández Rodríguez served as Tournament Director, while IA Ismael Nieto González was Chief Arbiter.🏆 52nd International Chessopen Ciudad de Sevilla 2027
The 52nd Abierto Internacional Ciudad de Sevilla is scheduled for January 8–16, 2027 at FIBES. The main Open will consist of nine Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move and will count for both Spanish and FIDE rating. The official tournament record identifies the organizer as the Delegación Sevillana de Ajedrez – Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez.
