Bergische Schachfreunde von 1923 e.V. is a historic and active chess club based in Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Founded in 1923, the organization has promoted competitive, recreational, and youth chess in the region for more than a century. Today, the club combines its long tradition with an extensive program of tournaments, league competition, training, and community activities.

The club welcomes experienced tournament players, juniors, beginners, and guests. Regular club evenings take place on Fridays at the Bildungswerk der AWO Rhein-Oberberg in Bergisch Gladbach. Moreover, children and juniors receive dedicated training before the main club evening. New visitors do not need previous tournament experience to participate in the club’s general activities.

Bergische Schachfreunde currently has more than 100 members and fields several teams within the regional German league system. In addition, the organization runs numerous open and internal tournaments throughout the season. Its combination of league chess, junior development, open competitions, and community engagement makes it an important part of chess life in Bergisch Gladbach and the Cologne region.

🏆 Tournaments and Chess Activities

Bergische Schachfreunde von 1923 e.V. maintains a particularly extensive tournament program. Its open competitions include the Hans-Friske-Schnellschachopen, Manfred-Bosbach-Turnier, Helmut-Stuhlmüller-Schnellschachturnier, Offene Blitz-Stadtmeisterschaft Bergisch Gladbach, and the club’s open monthly blitz series.

The organization also runs a club championship, cup competition, senior summer tournament, Christmas blitz, and other seasonal events. Therefore, members can play classical, rapid, and blitz chess throughout the year.

The Hans-Friske-Schnellschachopen has developed into one of the club’s major public tournaments. An earlier version of the competition ran for many years under the name Metten Aktiv before the club renamed it in honor of Hans Friske.

For the Hans-Friske-Schnellschachopen 2026, the club organizes nine rounds of FIDE-rated rapid chess on December 5, 2026, at Haus Steinbreche in Bergisch Gladbach-Refrath. The tournament accommodates up to 100 players and places particular emphasis on junior participation.

👦 Youth Chess and Player Development

Youth development is a central part of the club’s mission. Children and teenagers train every Friday from 17:30, while the regular club evening begins later in the evening.

The club’s young players participate in regional tournaments, youth championships, and team competitions. Furthermore, Bergische Schachfreunde fields a youth team and encourages juniors to gain experience in both internal and external competitions.

The annual Helmut-Stuhlmüller-Turnier, which the club has organized since 1991, also has a strong youth-development component. It gives younger players an opportunity to experience tournament and club chess in a welcoming competitive environment.

The Hans-Friske tournament follows the same philosophy. Hans Friske spent many years supporting young chess players as a talent scout and youth trainer. Consequently, the modern memorial tournament gives players aged 17 and under their own youth group.

📜 History and Achievements

Bergische Schachfreunde traces its history back to 1923. Historical records show that the organization had already developed a successful competitive team by the years immediately following the Second World War. In 1949, the Bergische Schachfreunde became district team champions in the Meisterklasse of the Cologne chess organization.

Another important chapter came through the merger with the chess club from Bensberg more than three decades ago. Members from Bensberg became an important part of the combined organization, and the club continues to honor that history through events such as the Helmut-Stuhlmüller-Turnier.

In 2023, Bergische Schachfreunde celebrated its 100th anniversary. The centenary program included several special events, highlighted by a 30-board simultaneous exhibition with German Grandmaster and 2022 European Champion Matthias Blübaum.

The organization continues to develop after its centenary. Membership has grown, youth participation has increased, and the club maintains several teams in regional competition. Meanwhile, its expanding open-tournament program brings players from other clubs to Bergisch Gladbach throughout the year.

In June 2026, Christian Eberl became the club’s new 1st Chairman. Under the renewed board, Bergische Schachfreunde continues to combine more than 100 years of history with active tournament organization, junior development, and community chess.
