Malmö Schackförbund (MSF) is a local chess federation based in Malmö, Sweden. It coordinates chess activity in the city, organizes major open and championship tournaments, supports youth competition, and works alongside the wider Swedish chess structure. The federation’s current Malmö club network includes Limhamns SK, Kristinebergs SK, and Malmö AS. Malmö Schackförbund has a history stretching back to 1924. Contemporary historical records document the federation celebrating its 25th anniversary in 1949. The organization therefore passed its centenary in 2024. Its present nonprofit entity is registered in Sweden under organization number 846000-3851, while its office is located at Linnégatan 61 in Limhamn. Patrik Nilsson currently serves as Chairman for the 2026/27 season. The current board also includes Grandmaster Stellan Brynell, Treasurer Conny Holst, Thomas Franzon, Edmund Ogbekene, and substitute member Mårten Ihd. Together, the board coordinates Malmö tournaments and maintains links with the city’s chess clubs and the wider regional chess community.

🏆 Malmö Open and MSF Open

The Malmö Open is Malmö Schackförbund’s flagship tournament and one of Sweden’s best-established weekend chess competitions. The tournament began in 1971. Its founder, Swedish chess journalist Lars Grahn, later described the inaugural Malmö Open as the first weekend chess tournament in Scandinavia, inspired by the Islington Open in London. Tournament archives from 1982 already listed a continuous sequence of winners beginning with the 1971 edition. Over the following decades, Malmö Open developed into a major national and international competition. The event has attracted grandmasters, international masters, leading Swedish players, juniors, club players, and visiting competitors from neighboring countries. Participation has sometimes reached the venue’s absolute capacity. In 2023, registration closed after the combined Malmö Open/MSF Open reached its limit of 335 players. Moreover, the tournament has become an established part of the Svenskt Grand Prix, connecting Malmö with Sweden’s principal national open-tournament circuit. Alongside the main event, MSF organizes the MSF Open, a rating-restricted competition that allows developing players to participate in the same tournament weekend. This structure gives the event both a strong elite component and a broad grassroots field.

🌟 Malmö Open 2026 & MSF Open

Malmö Schackförbund organizes the Malmö Open 2026 & MSF Open from December 11–13, 2026 at Stadions Sporthall, Eric Perssons väg 1 E, Malmö. The Malmö Open uses an eight-round FIDE Swiss system and receives Elo rating. The first four rounds use rapid chess at 15 minutes plus 5 seconds per move. The final four rounds then switch to classical 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The parallel MSF Open is restricted to players rated below 1750 Elo, or the equivalent national rating when no Elo exists. It also uses an eight-round FIDE Swiss format and receives Elo rating. Malmö Schackförbund manages the tournament directly. Entry fees go to the federation’s own PlusGiro account, while participant enquiries use the federation’s permanent office email and telephone number. The tournament therefore belongs clearly to Malmö Schackförbund rather than Stadions Sporthall, Sveriges Schackförbund, Skånes Schackförbund, or one of Malmö’s individual chess clubs.

♛ Malmö Championships and Local Tournament Program

Malmö Schackförbund also organizes the Öppna Malmömästerskapet, the Open Malmö Championship. This recurring competition determines the Malmö champion while remaining open to a wider field. Recent editions use a compact weekend rapid format. Players compete over seven rounds, while results receive FIDE Rapid rating. The federation manages registration and entry payments through the same administrative structure used for its other competitions. The tournament strengthens the link between Malmö’s individual clubs. Players from Limhamns SK, Malmö AS, Kristinebergs SK, and visiting clubs can compete together for the city championship. MSF also maintains a wider tournament calendar and coordinates dates with Skånes Schackförbund and the Swedish national competition program. Therefore, Malmö’s major events fit into a broader schedule that includes regional leagues, Swedish team competition, national championships, youth tournaments, and the Svenskt Grand Prix.

🧒 Junior and School Chess

Youth chess has remained an important part of Malmö Schackförbund’s work for many years. One of its established projects is the Caissa Open, a school-age tournament traditionally held during the autumn school holiday. Historical records show Malmö Schackförbund organizing the competition by at least 2000, while recent editions continue to divide players into school-age categories. The tournament gives younger players an accessible competitive environment before they progress to larger federation events. Moreover, participants represent Malmö clubs as well as chess organizations elsewhere in Skåne. Malmö Schackförbund’s member clubs maintain substantial junior programs of their own. In particular, the federation’s role helps connect this club-based coaching with city championships, regional tournaments, school events, and national competition. This structure gives young players several possible routes through organized chess: they can begin in club or school activity, enter events such as Caissa Open, and later progress into FIDE-rated tournaments including Malmö Open and MSF Open.

🤝 Malmö Chess and Regional Cooperation

Malmö Schackförbund occupies a distinctive position within southern Swedish chess. It maintains its own city-level identity while working closely with Skånes Schackförbund and Sveriges Schackförbund. Its office at Linnégatan 61 is also used by Skånes Schackförbund, which supports close administrative cooperation between city and regional chess. The two organizations coordinate tournament calendars and promote each other’s competitions. At club level, Malmö Schackförbund connects several of the city’s most active chess organizations. Limhamns SK, Malmö AS, and Kristinebergs SK each maintain their own membership, teams, training, and tournaments. MSF does not replace those clubs. Instead, it provides a common organizational framework for city-wide events and championships. This combination of long-term federation administration, local club cooperation, youth competition, city championships, and the internationally recognized Malmö Open has allowed Malmö Schackförbund to remain a central part of organized chess in the city for more than a century.
