Bergens Schakklub is a historic chess club based in central Bergen, Norway. Founded on September 11, 1902, the club belongs to the Norwegian organized chess structure and provides classical, rapid, and blitz competition, team chess, adult instruction, junior training, and regular club activity. In addition, it organizes major public tournaments in Bergen and maintains one of Norway’s best-known chess information websites. The club has played an important role in Norwegian chess for more than a century. Historical records identify Bergens Schakklub as one of the organizations involved when the Norwegian Chess Federation was founded in 1914. Moreover, the club hosted its first Norwegian national championship tournament in Bergen in 1926. National championships returned to the city in 1946, 1967, 1977, and later years. The club has also won the Norwegian team championship several times, including titles in 1946, 1967, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2003. Eirik T. Gullaksen currently serves as Chairman of Bergens Schakklub. He has held a central leadership role at the club for decades and is also an International Master. The current board includes Vice Chairman Kjetil Stokke, Treasurer Geir Ole Aagedal, Secretary Scott Macody Lund, Youth Leader August Trønnes, and board members Torbjørn Klausen, Ariza Hina Mansoor, and Olai Dyrhaug Eriksen. As of December 31, 2025, the club reported 178 primary members and 16 secondary members.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Achievement

Bergens Schakklub has a long tradition of national team competition. Its championship record includes seven Norwegian team titles between 1946 and 2003. In addition, the club finished second in the national team championship in 1991 and has remained active at the highest levels of Norwegian league chess across several eras. The club returned to the Norwegian Eliteserien for the 2025–2026 season after qualifying in 2025. Its qualification team included International Masters Kjetil Stokke, Jovanka Houska, Ivar Bern, and Eirik T. Gullaksen, together with Yngve Götestam Fossheim and Teodor Tenfjord Engelsen. Bergens then completed the 2025–2026 Eliteserien in fifth place, scoring eight match points from nine rounds. Therefore, the club retained a position among Norway’s leading team-chess organizations. The association also fields additional teams in the regional Vestlandsserien. Its depth allows players below the first-team level to gain competitive experience, while the strongest members can compete in national league chess. Historically, several prominent Norwegian players have represented Bergens Schakklub. These include International Masters Ivar Bern, Roy Harald Fyllingen, Eirik T. Gullaksen, and Kjetil Stokke, among other titled players.

🏆 Tournament Organization in Bergen

Tournament organization forms a major part of the club’s activity. Bergens Schakklub runs internal classical championships, rapid tournaments, blitz events, marathon blitz competitions, and weekend opens throughout the year. The club also contributes to major events beyond its own regular calendar. In 2025, Bergens Schakklub joined Søråshøgda Sjakklubb and Sotra Sjakklubb in organizing the Norwegian national championship, Landsturneringen, at Quality Hotel Edvard Grieg in Bergen. The event attracted 592 players across its different championship classes. Earlier Bergen organizing projects have included Norwegian youth championships, national school-team championships, national club-team events, women’s championships, and the Norwegian rapid and blitz championships. Consequently, the club has experience with both weekly local events and large federation championships. In 2000, the Norwegian chess community recognized this combination of sporting results, tournament activity, and organizational work when Bergens Schakklub became the first recipient of the national Club of the Year recognition. The club remains highly active in 2026. For example, its summer program includes a recurring Bergen Sommerlyn blitz series, while its regular calendar combines classical tournaments with rated rapid and blitz competitions.

🌟 Bergen Grand Prix 2026

Bergens Schakklub organizes the Bergen Grand Prix 2026 from November 27–29, 2026 at Nordnes Bydelshus, Klosteret 2, Bergen. The tournament continues a Bergen Grand Prix tradition that reaches back for decades. Archived Norwegian tournament calendars document Bergen Grand Prix events during the 1990s and 2000s, while the club has continued to organize modern editions as part of its broader weekend-tournament program. For 2026, the official public tournament calendar confirms Bergens Schakklub as organizer, Nordnes Bydelshus as the venue, and the November 27–29 dates. Registration and final tournament administration are handled through TournamentService. The venue also has a connection with the club’s development program. Bergens Schakklub uses Nordnes Bydelshus for part of its junior chess activity. Therefore, the 2026 Grand Prix brings the club’s tournament program into a familiar community chess environment in central Bergen.

🎓 Chess Training and Player Development

Bergens Schakklub provides structured instruction for both adults and younger players. Its adult chess course began in January 2014 and has since become a recurring twice-yearly program. The 2026 adult course consists of ten instructional evenings covering openings and related middlegames, endgames, practical play, and game analysis. Moreover, course participants receive club and Norwegian Chess Federation membership and can enter a dedicated internal tournament after completing the program. The club also maintains a long-running youth section. Its chess group for children and young people started in 1998. Current courses serve players approximately 6–16 years old, with separate beginner and intermediate groups. Participation has grown enough that the club moved part of its intermediate youth group into its Rosenbergsgaten headquarters during 2026. Meanwhile, other sessions continue at Nordnes Bydelshus. This structure creates a practical development pathway. New players can begin with structured lessons, progress into club tournaments, and later enter rated events and team competition.

Bergens Schakklub has also developed an unusually significant chess-media presence through Bergensjakk.no. Eirik T. Gullaksen launched the website in September 1997 as an information service for club members. Over time, its coverage expanded from local news into Norwegian and international chess reporting. Today, the website combines information about Bergens Schakklub with tournament announcements, results, federation news, Norwegian player activity, international events, ratings, and links to live games. It therefore serves both the club and the wider Norwegian chess community. The site also preserves extensive historical tournament archives. As a result, it provides a valuable record of Bergen chess as well as current information about tournaments throughout Norway and abroad.

🏛️ Club Venue and Community

Bergens Schakklub owns its principal club premises at Rosenbergsgaten 9 in central Bergen. The club acquired the premises after leaving its former Hollendergaten location and developed them into a permanent base for chess activity. The venue hosts classical tournaments, rapid and blitz chess, adult courses, meetings, and other club activities. Meanwhile, some youth sessions and larger events use additional Bergen venues when more playing space is required. The club maintains an active weekly program during both spring and autumn. In addition, its permanent headquarters gives Bergens Schakklub a stable base for a membership that reached almost 200 primary and secondary members by the end of 2025. After more than 120 years, the association therefore combines a substantial historical record with a modern program of elite team chess, grassroots instruction, frequent tournaments, youth development, and chess media.
