♟️ About ASD Scacchi Augusta Perusia
ASD Scacchi Augusta Perusia is a chess association based in Perugia, Umbria, Italy. The club is affiliated with the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI) under ID 18006. In addition, it holds an affiliation with the Centro Sportivo Educativo Nazionale (CSEN). Its activities include team chess, junior development, FIDE-rated tournaments, regional championships, and the organization of major chess events across Umbria. The association has a long competitive history. Ettore Bertolini has served as President since 1988, while the current national sports registry records the association’s registration from December 31, 2010. Over the following decades, Augusta Perusia developed a strong connection with competitive chess in Perugia and with several players who later achieved major national and international results. Ettore Bertolini remains the club’s current President and legal representative in 2026. The FSI also lists Natsuko Moritake and Antonio Veschini on the current club council. Moreover, Bertolini continues to handle tournament organization, team administration, youth activity, and public communication for the association.🌟 Chess Heritage and Player Development
Augusta Perusia has played a notable role in the development of several strong players. One of the most significant episodes came in 2005, when the young Fabiano Caruana joined Augusta Perusia for his first Italian federation registration. At that time, Caruana was already a FIDE Master and was beginning the career that would later take him to the highest level of world chess. The club also developed successful Italian junior players. Roberto Mogranzini won an Italian youth title in 1999, while Lorenzo Lodici achieved another national youth championship for Augusta Perusia in 2015. In the same year, Silvia Albi Bachini Conti finished second in her girls’ national championship category. More recently, Matteo Viti represented the club at the 2024 Italian Youth Championships in Salsomaggiore. He scored 7.5 points from nine games in the U14 competition and finished level on points for first place before taking third after tiebreaks. Junior participation remains an active part of the club. Augusta Perusia sent ten young players to the 2024 Italian Youth Championship finals. Therefore, its youth activity continues a development tradition that extends across several generations.♜ Team Chess and Competitive Activity
ASD Scacchi Augusta Perusia participates actively in the Campionato Italiano a Squadre (CIS). In 2026, the association entered multiple teams in the national championship structure. Its Augusta Perusia and Euro Scacchi teams both competed in Serie B, Group 13. This allowed the association to field two separate squads at the same national level. Moreover, the Euro Scacchi lineup included experienced players such as Hungarian Grandmaster József Horváth, Riccardo Marsili, and Riccardo Rago. The club also entered additional players through its broader team structure. Consequently, Augusta Perusia can provide competitive opportunities to experienced adults, developing players, and juniors. In March 2026, the association went beyond simply entering teams. It organized the Perugia CIS gathering for Serie B Group 13 and Serie C Group 24. The five-round event took place at Piscina Pellini in Perugia. Furthermore, Augusta Perusia organized the 2026 Umbria Promotion Division gathering in May. That event gave teams the opportunity to qualify for Serie C in 2027. As a result, the association contributes both as a competitor and as an organizer within Italy’s national team championship system.🏆 Tournament Organization in Umbria
Tournament organization represents another major part of Augusta Perusia’s work. The club runs FSI- and FIDE-rated events in Perugia while also collaborating with organizers and institutions elsewhere in Umbria. For example, the association organized the CIG U18 Provincial Championship of Perugia in March 2026. The rapid tournament served as a qualification event for the national youth championship finals. In addition, results counted for FIDE Rapid rating. The club also works closely with CSEN Provincia di Perugia on the Gran Premio di Scacchi dell’Umbria, a regional circuit of weekend classical tournaments. Daniele Ubaldi created and directs the circuit, while CSEN Provincia di Perugia and ASD Scacchi Augusta Perusia jointly organize it. The 2026 Gran Premio consists of two principal weekend events: the 3rd International Tournament City of Todi in April and the 3rd International Tournament City of Spoleto in October. Both events use classical FIDE-rated chess and contribute points toward the overall Gran Premio standings. This partnership extends Augusta Perusia’s organizational activity beyond Perugia itself. Therefore, the association now plays an active role in developing interconnected tournament chess across several Umbrian cities.🌍 III Torneo Internazionale Città di Spoleto 2026
The III Torneo Internazionale Città di Spoleto takes place from October 16–18, 2026 at Palazzo Leti Sansi, Via Arco di Druso 37, Spoleto. The tournament serves as the concluding event of the Gran Premio di Scacchi dell’Umbria 2026. The organizers divide the competition into Open A, Open B, and Open C. Open A is designed for players rated at least 1800, Open B for players below 1800, and Open C for players below 1600. However, the organizers may grant up to five wild cards for Open A. All three sections use a five-round Swiss system with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Results count for FIDE Standard rating. In addition, twelve electronic boards transmit leading games online through Chess.com and Lichess. The tournament offers a total cash prize fund of €2,500, divided among the three sections. Moreover, the organizers provide additional category prizes and a commemorative T-shirt for every participant. The organizational responsibility is particularly clear in the official regulations. Players pay their entry fees directly to ASD Scacchi Augusta Perusia, and registration documents go to the association’s tournament email. Ettore Bertolini, President of Augusta Perusia, serves as the principal published tournament contact. At the wider circuit level, Daniele Ubaldi serves as Technical Director of the Gran Premio. Therefore, the Spoleto tournament combines Augusta Perusia’s administrative organization with the broader CSEN-backed regional circuit.🧒 Junior Chess and Regional Development
Youth chess remains closely connected with Augusta Perusia’s tournament program. The club regularly enters young players in provincial, regional, and national competitions, while it also organizes qualifying events for the Italian Youth Championships. The association’s 2026 activity demonstrates this combination clearly. Augusta Perusia organized the Perugia provincial CIG U18 event while continuing to field young players through its team structure and individual competitions. Current national sports-registry data also shows the scale of the association. For the 2026 sporting year, the registry records 52 competitive members under the FSI, together with additional recreational registrations. Moreover, the club maintains relationships with other Umbrian chess organizations. These partnerships support events in Perugia, Todi, Spoleto, and other regional centers. Consequently, Augusta Perusia contributes to a wider tournament network rather than operating only within its home city.
