♟️ About DEAC-Debreceni Sakkiskola
DEAC-Debreceni Sakkiskola is the chess section and competitive chess identity associated with Debreceni Egyetemi Atlétikai Club (DEAC) in Debrecen, Hungary. It combines competitive team chess, individual tournament play, junior development, and chess education. Moreover, the Hungarian Chess Federation lists Debreceni Sakkiskola among its member organizations in Hajdú-Bihar County. The DEAC chess section restarted in the summer of 2021 after a lengthy interruption. However, organized chess activity continued during that period through Debreceni Sakkiskola. The chess school had already operated for more than a decade when the DEAC section returned. Therefore, the present structure connects the University of Debrecen’s sporting environment with an established local chess-development program. Nagy Sándor currently leads the DEAC chess section. He also serves as Tournament Director for major events organized by the club and the University of Debrecen. In addition, the club publishes his direct email address and telephone number for chess-related enquiries and tournament registration.♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development
Team competition forms an important part of DEAC-Debreceni Sakkiskola. The club operates several squads, which allows experienced players and developing juniors to compete at different levels of the Hungarian league system. For the 2026/2027 Hungarian National Team Championship, DEAC-Debreceni Sakkiskola enters its first team in the NB I Maróczy Group. Meanwhile, its second team competes in the NB II Barcza Group. This structure gives the club a direct presence in two national divisions during the new season. The club also maintains a strong regional program. In the 2024/2025 season, the DEAC-DSI 3 team won the Hajdú-Bihar County First Division with 53 points. In addition, the club continued to field multiple county-level teams during 2025/2026. Its third team finished that season with a county championship silver medal. DEAC players also compete regularly in rapid, blitz, classical, and FIDE-rated individual events. Consequently, the club combines league chess with an active tournament calendar throughout the year.🎓 Chess Training and Youth Development
Youth development has a central role in the DEAC chess program. The club organizes instruction at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, while young players can start training from around five years of age. The program aims to prepare players for competition while also supporting concentration, decision-making, and personal development. Mester Gyula plays a major role in this work as a leading coach at the club. He is a FIDE Trainer and has worked with young chess players for more than three decades. Moreover, several DEAC juniors have achieved significant national and international results under the club’s training structure. In April 2026, Sojnóczki Anna won the Hungarian girls’ U12 national championship. She then added the U12 girls’ title at the Hungarian age-group rapid championship in May. Meanwhile, Biró Beáta achieved an international milestone in June 2026 by winning the girls’ U16 problem-solving competition at the Youth Chess World Championship in Montesilvano. The club’s junior players have also represented Hungarian school chess internationally. In 2025, five members of the Debreceni Fazekas Mihály Gimnázium team at the World Schools Team Championship were DEAC players. Mester Gyula led the team during the competition in the United States.🏆 Dr. Kántor Sándor Memorial
DEAC-Debreceni Sakkiskola and the University of Debrecen organize the Dr. Kántor Sándor Emlékverseny 2026 in Debrecen. The tournament takes place from October 26–29, 2026 at the University of Debrecen, Egyetem tér 1. The organizers divide the competition into A and B groups. Both use a seven-round Swiss system with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Moreover, the tournament counts for international FIDE rating. Nagy Sándor serves as Tournament Director, while FIDE Arbiter Bodnar Máté acts as Chief Arbiter. The competition therefore forms part of the club’s wider program of nationally and internationally rated chess events. The memorial honors Dr. Kántor Sándor (1934–2025), a longtime figure in Debrecen chess and a DEAC player. He also worked at the University of Debrecen as a mathematics academic and taught generations of young chess players. In 2025, shortly before his death, he received the Szabó László Memorial Award in recognition of his contribution to chess. The event therefore has a particularly strong connection with both organizers. It links the University of Debrecen, DEAC’s competitive chess program, and the legacy of a player and educator closely associated with Debrecen chess.
