♟️ About Échiquier Niortais
Échiquier Niortais is a chess club based in Niort, Deux-Sèvres, France. The club affiliates with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under code T79001. It combines competitive chess, junior instruction, adult play, school programs, national team competition, and FIDE-rated tournaments. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in December 2025 with a special event at Niort City Hall. Grandmaster Maxime Lagarde, who learned chess at Échiquier Niortais as a child, returned for the celebration and played a simultaneous exhibition against 33 players. Therefore, the anniversary connected the club’s long local history with one of the strongest players to emerge from its training program. Nathalie Carrey currently serves as President of Échiquier Niortais. The FFE lists Thierry Lucas as the club’s principal official contact. Moreover, Lucas handles communication for the Open International de Niort and remains directly involved in tournament organization. The club currently has more than 160 FFE licences across the federation’s A and B categories.🏆 Open International de Niort and Tournament Activity
The Open International de Niort is the club’s principal annual classical tournament. The competition reaches its 22nd edition in 2026 and takes place from October 29–31 at Hôtel Mercure Niort Centre. The 2026 festival includes two FIDE-rated tournaments. The Master section is designed for players rated above 1850, while the Accession section serves players below 1900. Both competitions use six Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Moreover, the organizer offers special conditions to attract titled players. Grandmasters and International Masters receive free entry, while several invited GMs and IMs can receive accommodation, meals, and travel support. The combined 2026 festival offers at least €4,200 in prizes when the required participation level is reached. Échiquier Niortais also organizes a major annual rapid tournament. The 8ème Rapide de l’Échiquier Niortais takes place in September 2026 and receives FIDE Rapid rating. Therefore, the club maintains substantial rated competition in both classical and rapid chess.♜ National Team Chess and Competitive Development
Team chess forms a central part of Échiquier Niortais. The FFE currently lists the club’s leading adult team in Nationale 3. Youth players compete at an even higher national level. The club participates in Nationale 1 Jeunes, giving its strongest juniors regular competition against leading youth teams from other parts of France. In addition, Échiquier Niortais fields a women’s team in Nationale 2 Féminine. The club has also developed dedicated women’s tournament activity. In 2025, it organized its first internal women’s tournament, which received official FFE and FIDE rapid recognition. This broad team structure provides several competitive pathways. Adults can progress into national interclub chess, while juniors and female players have dedicated team opportunities within the French federation system.🎓 Chess School and Junior Development
Youth chess is one of Échiquier Niortais’ principal activities. The club runs a chess school on Wednesday afternoons and additional instruction during the week. The current schedule includes several hours of Wednesday chess-school activity, followed by free play and internal competition. Additional lessons take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings. Consequently, young players can combine formal instruction with practical games. The club also supports players who compete in regional and national youth championships. In 2026, Échiquier Niortais juniors took part in the French Youth Championships. Meanwhile, the club’s youth team continues to compete in Nationale 1 Jeunes. School chess provides another route into the organization. Échiquier Niortais works in school and extracurricular environments around Niort and Deux-Sèvres. In 2025, a group of young Niort players received recognition at the city’s sports awards after becoming academic chess champions.🤝 Community Chess and Partnerships
Échiquier Niortais regularly takes chess beyond its permanent clubroom. The club works with the City of Niort, educational organizations, cultural institutions, and local sports partners. In July 2026, for example, the club partnered with the Musée Bernard d’Agesci for the public event Échecs et Muses. Visitors could play on a giant chessboard, attend introductory and improvement sessions, and learn about chess history. The event was free and open to the public. Moreover, the club took part in Niort’s 2026 city sports festival, where local associations offered demonstrations and introductory activities. Échiquier Niortais has also developed holiday programs that combine chess with other activities, including tennis and multi-racket sports. The City of Niort supports the club’s local activity and provides municipal premises at 49 rue de Ribray. Therefore, the club has a permanent base for lessons, tournaments, free play, and community projects.🌟 Fifty Years of Chess in Niort
Échiquier Niortais marked its 50th anniversary with a major celebration in December 2025. The event highlighted the connection between the club’s past and its current youth-development work. Grandmaster Maxime Lagarde, French classical champion in 2019 and French rapid champion in 2024, returned to the club where he began playing chess. He faced 33 opponents simultaneously at Niort City Hall and scored 31 wins and two draws. Around 200 spectators and chess enthusiasts attended the event. Moreover, the club presented Lagarde’s return as an example for its current junior players. His development from a young Niort club member to Grandmaster illustrates the competitive potential of structured local chess training. Today, Échiquier Niortais combines that history with a large youth program, national league teams, school activities, and an expanding calendar of FIDE-rated tournaments.
