♟️ About Schaakclub De Uil

Schaakclub De Uil is a chess club based in Hillegom, South Holland, the Netherlands. The club affiliates with the Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaakbond (KNSB) and the Noord-Hollandse Schaakbond (NHSB). It combines internal and external competition, youth chess, training, open tournaments, rapid chess, simultaneous exhibitions, and community activities. The club was founded on January 19, 1933 and received royal approval on November 20, 1973. In 2023, De Uil celebrated its 90th anniversary with separate activities for senior and junior members. Therefore, the association represents more than nine decades of organized chess in Hillegom. The club’s current chair position is vacant. However, an experienced board continues to manage its activities. Dick Roosa serves as Secretary, Peter Kaptein as Treasurer, Ad Reijneveld as Internal and External Competition Director, and Fred van der Bent as Youth Director. Peter Kaptein also plays an important role in tournament organization and serves as one of the organizers of the 39e VOGES Rapid Schaaktoernooi 2026.

🏆 VOGES Tournaments and Competitive Activity

Schaakclub De Uil maintains several long-running tournament traditions. One of its principal events is the VOGES Rapid Schaaktoernooi, which reaches its 39th edition in 2026. The 39e VOGES Rapid Schaaktoernooi takes place on October 10, 2026. The competition includes a main group and rating-based eight-player groups, allowing participants of different strengths to compete against comparable opposition. Moreover, the results are submitted to the KNSB for rapid rating. Cok Ippel and Peter Kaptein organize the 2026 edition. VOGES Verpakking of Hillegom supports the competition as title sponsor. Consequently, the tournament combines the club’s organizational experience with a long-standing local sponsorship partnership. De Uil also organizes the VOGES Open Hillegoms Schaakkampioenschap. The classical competition reaches its 43rd edition in 2026 and runs across several Friday evenings before a Saturday final round in December. Thus, the VOGES partnership supports both rapid and classical tournament chess in Hillegom.

♜ Vierkamptoernooi and Club Competition

Another major tradition is the club’s annual Vierkamptoernooi. De Uil held the 52nd edition in June 2026, demonstrating the longevity of this tournament series. The event divides players into compact groups according to playing strength. This format creates closely matched games while allowing players from different rating levels to participate in the same tournament weekend. In addition, De Uil runs a full internal competition for its members. Regular club chess takes place on Monday evenings at De Bestemming in Hillegom. Junior activities run from 19:00 to 20:00, while senior chess continues from 20:00 until midnight. The club also participates extensively in external team competition. Its current structure includes four teams in NHSB competition, ranging from the first through third regional classes. Therefore, members can combine weekly internal chess with formal matches against other clubs.

🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

Youth chess has long formed an important part of Schaakclub De Uil. The club provides Monday evening instruction for young players at its regular Hillegom venue. Beginners can learn chess from the fundamentals, while more experienced juniors develop their skills through structured lessons and competition. Historically, the club has used the Dutch Stappenmethode training system, covering several progressive levels. Young players also take part in a dedicated internal youth competition. The 2025/26 Jeugd Competitie ran throughout the season at De Bestemming using a Keizer pairing system. Moreover, the club regularly creates additional competitive opportunities for juniors. Its long-running youth section has included tournaments, examinations, training activities, and anniversary events. In this way, young players can move gradually from introductory instruction into regular competitive chess.

🤝 Community Chess and Club Life

De Uil extends its activities beyond standard league matches and club tournaments. The association has participated in public chess events around Hillegom and uses these occasions to introduce the game to new players. In 2025, the club joined the Schaak-Off, a nationwide KNSB rapid initiative, for the first time. Its local preliminary tournament included both existing club members and participants from the Jouw Eerste Zet introductory program. Two De Uil players later won their categories at the national final. The club has also taken chess into local public spaces. Recent activities have included participation in the Zomerfestival in Park Elsbroek, chess mornings at Julianapark, and a large outdoor chess set near the Oude Pomp. In addition, De Uil organizes simultaneous exhibitions and other special events. Consequently, its program combines serious tournament chess with social and community-focused activities in Hillegom.
