♟️ About Chania Chess Academy

Chania Chess Academy (Σκακιστική Ακαδημία Χανίων – ΣΑΧ) is a chess club, training academy, and tournament organizer based in Chania, Crete, Greece. Founded in 1997, the academy has developed chess programs for children from about five years of age and has worked with schools, kindergartens, municipal bodies, libraries, and local communities. In national competitions and many recent public activities, the club also appears under the name Chania Chess Academy – Samaria (ΣΑΧ – ΣΑΜΑΡΙΑ). Youth development remains central to the academy’s work. Its players compete in Cretan and Greek youth and school championships, while the senior team participates in the A’ Ethniki, Greece’s highest national club division. Alongside competitive chess, the academy runs structured training, local tournaments, school initiatives, training camps, and international events in cooperation with municipalities, the Regional Unit of Chania, the Greek Chess Federation, and other chess organizations. The academy is currently led by President Giorgos Volanis, while Konstantinos Tsarouhas is one of its principal chess organizers and a key public contact. In 2026, the academy organized the 5th International Chess Tournament “Mikis Theodorakis” in Chania and co-organized the 19th Paleochora International Chess Tournament, two of its most important recurring international events.

📜 History and Development

Chania Chess Academy was established in 1997 by a group of chess enthusiasts who wanted to use chess both as a competitive sport and as an educational activity for young people. From its early years, the academy developed teaching programs in primary schools, kindergartens, childcare centers, and municipal facilities in Chania and surrounding communities. The club later developed a strong national team presence. Its official history records participation in the Greek A’ Ethniki from 2004, while the academy has also built a substantial record in youth and school chess. Its development model has traditionally emphasized players trained through its own youth system.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

The academy maintains an extensive youth-development program and regularly prepares players for regional and national championships. In June 2026, its U12 team became Crete champion, winning the regional team championship in Rethymno. During the same month, Chania Chess Academy organized an intensive summer training camp for young players. The 2026 program included sessions with leading Greek Grandmasters Christos Banikas and Stamatis Kourkoulos, as well as Indian Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly. The camp formed part of the academy’s preparation and development program for its junior players.

♜ Team Chess

Chania Chess Academy continues to compete in Greece’s top national club championship. In the 53rd Greek Team Championship – A’ Ethniki 2026, held in Patras from July 4–10, the academy finished 20th among 34 teams after seven rounds, scoring three wins, one draw, and three losses. This followed a strong 10th-place finish in 2025, which secured the club’s direct eligibility for the 2026 championship.

🏆 International Tournament Activity

The academy’s international tournament program is centered on two established classical events in western Crete. The 5th International Chess Tournament “Mikis Theodorakis” was held from April 3–9, 2026 at the Center for Mediterranean Architecture – Great Arsenal in Chania’s Venetian Harbor. Chania Chess Academy and A.P.O. “Mikis Theodorakis” organized the nine-round event, with Konstantinos Tsarouhas and Giorgos Naoum serving as Tournament Directors. The 2026 tournament attracted 142 players. The 19th Paleochora International Chess Tournament followed from July 18–25, 2026 in Paleochora. It was organized by the Municipality of Kantanos-Selino and Chania Chess Academy – Samaria, with the Regional Unit of Chania and Greek Chess Federation as co-organizers. The tournament used a nine-round Swiss system and allowed opportunities for FIDE title norms in its top group.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Giorgos Volanis is the current President of Chania Chess Academy – Samaria. His presidency is confirmed by official municipal reporting from the 2026 Mikis Theodorakis tournament and other current club activities. Konstantinos Tsarouhas remains closely involved in the academy’s competitive and organizational work. He serves regularly as Tournament Director or arbiter and is a principal organizer of the Mikis Theodorakis and Paleochora international tournaments.
