Club Ajedrez Tomelloso is a chess club based in Tomelloso, Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Its modern development began around 2000, when chess instruction led by Juan Carlos Domínguez helped establish a new generation of competitive players in the city. The club combines team competition, chess education, rated tournaments, school chess, and community events. Since the 2025–2026 season, its regular activities have been based at the Casino de Tomelloso in the city center. The club maintains an unusually broad program for players of different ages and strengths. Activities include regular training groups, Friday tournaments, rapid and blitz events, school competitions, Christmas tournaments, team championships, simultaneous exhibitions, and the annual Open Ciudad de Tomelloso. Youth development remains particularly important, while stronger members represent Tomelloso in regional and national competition. Moreover, the club works closely with the Ayuntamiento de Tomelloso, Casino de Tomelloso, local schools, and the regional chess community. Ángel Carlos López Quevedo is a current board member, tournament organizer, arbiter, and principal public contact for Club Ajedrez Tomelloso. He has been closely involved with the club since his youth and now coordinates tournaments and public activities. The club has enjoyed a strong 2026 season: its first team finished third in the Castilla-La Mancha Regional Team Championship in July, while Tomelloso B won the second group. In August, the club then became regional team blitz runner-up. Its next flagship event is the III Open Ciudad de Tomelloso, scheduled for October 23–25, 2026.

📜 History and Development

The modern history of Club Ajedrez Tomelloso began around 2000, when mathematics teacher and strong chess player Juan Carlos Domínguez started systematic chess instruction for young players in Tomelloso. That generation included players such as Ángel Carlos López, Miguel Ángel Lomas, and Rubén Cañas. With experienced players joining the group, Tomelloso soon became competitive at regional level. In 2003, the club achieved third place in the Castilla-La Mancha team championship. During the following years, the club expanded its youth work and produced several regional junior champions. It also developed a stronger senior team, competing successfully in Spanish national team competition. A significant organizational change came in 2025, when the club moved its regular base to the Casino de Tomelloso, Calle Don Víctor Peñasco 21. The Casino now hosts training sessions, Friday competitions, and many of the club’s internal activities.

🎓 Youth, Schools and Chess Training

Chess education is one of Club Ajedrez Tomelloso’s principal activities. For the 2025–2026 season, Marco Antonio Blázquez was named the main instructor for the club’s different training groups at the Casino de Tomelloso. The club has a long record of working with local schools. Its Torneo Interescolar reached its 15th edition in December 2025, bringing pupils from different Tomelloso schools together for individual and school-team competition. Colegio Virgen de las Viñas won the school trophy, while Pablo Pecero achieved a perfect score to win the individual competition. Tomelloso school teams have also competed successfully beyond the city. In 2025, IES Francisco García Pavón finished sixth at the Spanish schools championship, illustrating the wider development of scholastic chess in Tomelloso. In addition, the club organizes camps, open-air chess, simultaneous exhibitions, and introductory tournaments. Therefore, young players can progress from school-based chess into regular club training and competitive events.

♜ Team Chess and 2026 Results

Club Ajedrez Tomelloso fielded teams in both groups of the 2026 Castilla-La Mancha Regional Team Championship, held in Manzanares from July 2–5. The first team defeated strong opposition during the championship, including top-seeded Club Ajedrez Noblejas, and eventually finished third overall. José Ramón Ramírez Díaz also received the award for the best result on board two. Meanwhile, Tomelloso B won Group B, completing the championship with victories in all of its matches. Rodrigo Gómez Díaz and Diego Pecero Rebato earned individual board awards for the team. The club achieved another major result on August 22, 2026, when C.A. Tomelloso A finished second in the IX Castilla-La Mancha Team Blitz Championship. The event attracted 26 teams, while Tomelloso entered five separate squads. Ángel Carlos López Quevedo earned the individual prize for the best fourth-board performance.

🏆 Open Ciudad de Tomelloso

The Open Ciudad de Tomelloso has quickly become the club’s flagship tournament. The inaugural edition was held in October 2024 and attracted approximately 100 players. The second edition, played from October 17–19, 2025, expanded significantly to 153 participants. The tournament again used separate Sub2400 and Sub1800 sections. Alejandro Daniel Rumbos García won the Sub2400 tournament, while Sara El Ammari Rovira won the Sub1800 section. The III Open Ciudad de Tomelloso is scheduled for October 23–25, 2026. It will once again feature Sub2400 and Sub1800 tournaments, with seven rounds in each section. Players will receive 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The organizer has announced more than €3,000 in prizes, while both sections have active Info64 tournament records. The exact 2026 playing venue is still pending confirmation on the official tournament website. Therefore, the club has correctly avoided reusing the 2025 venue until the new location is finalized.
