The Federação Amazonense de Xadrez (FAX-AM) is the official state chess federation for Amazonas, Brazil. It promotes competitive chess, supports athletes, and coordinates official events across the state. Moreover, the federation is affiliated with the Brazilian Chess Confederation. Its work connects local clubs, schools, organizers, arbiters, and players with Brazil’s national chess structure.

The federation was founded in Manaus on 31 March 1968. Portuguese chess player Alexandre Gonçalves played a leading role in its creation. Since then, FAX-AM has supported several generations of Amazonian players. It has also developed state championships, rating events, youth festivals, and wider community initiatives.

National Master Rudson Marinho Peixoto serves as President of FAX-AM. He also directs the Manaus Chess Open and other major competitions. In addition, the federation works with experienced organizers, arbiters, academies, and institutional partners. This cooperation helps FAX-AM deliver events throughout Manaus and other parts of Amazonas.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

FAX-AM manages an annual program of classical, rapid, and blitz competitions. Its calendar includes state championships, FIDE-rated tournaments, memorial events, and rating circuits. Therefore, players can compete in several formats during the season. The federation also submits eligible events for CBX and FIDE rating.

The Manaus Chess Open is the federation’s leading international tournament project. The event began in 2022 and has grown into a major Brazilian open. Moreover, it attracts grandmasters, international masters, national champions, juniors, and club players. The program includes classical, rapid, blitz, team, and scholastic competitions.

The federation also organizes the Amazonian Absolute and Women’s Championships. These events determine leading state titles and bring together established players and emerging talents. Meanwhile, shorter FAX events create more frequent opportunities for rated competition. Examples include rapid tournaments, blitz events, classical IRTs, and memorial competitions.

FAX-AM publishes tournament news, official calendars, regulations, and results through its website and social channels. In addition, it works with the Brazilian Chess Confederation and local organizers. As a result, players receive clearer information about schedules, eligibility, registration, ratings, and tournament conditions.

🎓 Youth Chess and Regional Development

Youth development is a central part of the federation’s program. FAX-AM supports the Festival Amazonense da Criança and Festival Amazonense da Juventude. These championships cover age groups through U14 and U18. Moreover, they select state representatives for Brazil’s national youth festivals.

The federation works with chess schools and academies across Manaus. These partnerships provide organizers, arbiters, training support, equipment, and suitable playing venues. Therefore, children can move from school or academy lessons into official competition. Strong young players can then progress toward state and national championships.

FAX-AM also promotes chess as an educational and social activity. Its events welcome children, teenagers, adults, women, and senior players. In addition, the federation supports projects that introduce chess to new communities. This wider approach strengthens both participation and competitive standards.
