Dundee Chess Congress is an annual weekend chess tournament organizer based in Dundee, Scotland. The modern congress was revived in 2004 after a ten-year break, when a group of local chess players brought the event back to the city. Since 2018, the congress has been held at the University of Dundee Chaplaincy Centre, where it provides a central venue for competitive over-the-board chess. The congress is organized as an independent annual event rather than a conventional membership chess club. Its program is built around three sections — Premier, Major, and Minor — allowing experienced players, club competitors, juniors, and developing players to compete at an appropriate level. Games are submitted for Chess Scotland standard grading, and the tournament follows a traditional five-round weekend format from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. Ray Noble is the current Congress Director and principal organizer. He works with an experienced Dundee organizing team that includes Keith Rose, James Anderson, Daniel Coleman, Raymond Flood, Jean Chalmers, Joshua Crofts, Colin Young, and David Findlay. The next Dundee Chess Congress takes place from October 9–11, 2026, with Alan Dunn Financial Management and ChessPick supporting the event as sponsors.

📜 History and Development

Dundee Chess Congress was revitalized in 2004 following a decade-long hiatus. The first tournament after its revival was staged at the Queens Hotel and attracted 124 players, providing a strong foundation for the renewed event. In 2005, the congress moved to the Next Generation Club near Monifieth. That venue served the tournament for more than a decade, but changing venue arrangements led the organizers to pause the congress in 2017 while searching for a suitable replacement. The tournament returned in 2018 at the University of Dundee Chaplaincy Centre. The venue has remained the home of the congress and also has longstanding links with Dundee’s local chess community through Castlehill Chess Club.

🏆 Congress and Tournament Activity

Dundee Chess Congress follows a five-round Swiss-system format played over three days. Round 1 begins on Friday evening, followed by two games on Saturday and two on Sunday. For 2026, all three sections use a time control of 90 minutes plus a 15-second increment from move one. The competition is divided into:

• Premier – principally for players rated 1700 and above
• Major – rating limit 1800
• Minor – rating limit 1400

The Premier is limited to 36 players for the 2026 edition. The organizer also provides grading prizes and dedicated junior awards in addition to the principal overall prizes. The congress emphasizes equal participation across playing levels. Its published policy states that titled players do not receive complimentary entry; instead, all competitors contribute toward the tournament’s costs and prize fund.

🌍 Dundee Chess Congress 2026

The Dundee Chess Congress 2026 takes place from October 9–11, 2026 at the University of Dundee Chaplaincy Centre, Cross Row, Dundee. The event is listed on the current Chess Scotland calendar for both adult and junior players. The published 2026 prize structure awards £400 for first place, £200 for second, and £100 for third in each of the Premier, Major, and Minor sections, with additional grading and junior prizes. The standard entry fee is £32, while Chess Scotland members and eligible junior players receive reduced entry fees. The congress is also maintaining live entrant lists through Chess-Results. Its Premier, Major, and Minor sections are already registered for the October 2026 competition.

Ray Noble serves as Congress Director. The official Dundee Chess Congress website identifies him at the head of the current organizing team, while the English Chess Federation also lists Raymond Noble as organizer of the 2026 congress. Keith Rose remains closely involved in tournament administration and is the current contact for corrections to the entrant list. The congress continues to rely on an experienced group of local organizers and volunteers.
