The Azerbaijan Chess Federation, officially known in Azerbaijani as Azərbaycan Şahmat Federasiyası, is the national governing organization for chess in Azerbaijan. Based in Baku, the federation represents the country within FIDE and the European Chess Union. The present federation became a member of FIDE in 1992, following the restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence. It coordinates the national structure for competitive chess, including player registration, ratings, national championships, tournament approval, arbiter development, international representation, and cooperation with regional chess organizations. Mahir Mammedov serves as President of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation. He is also a FIDE Vice-President and International Organizer. Together with the federation’s management, professional staff, coaches, arbiters, regional representatives, and tournament organizers, he supports the development of chess throughout the country. Azerbaijan has a strong international chess tradition and has produced world-class grandmasters, leading women players, European champions, and successful national teams. Therefore, the federation’s work connects grassroots participation and youth development with elite international competition.

🏆 Championships and Tournament Activity

The Azerbaijan Chess Federation manages a broad program of classical, rapid, blitz, individual, team, youth, and women’s competitions. Its principal national events include the Azerbaijan Open Championship, Azerbaijan Women’s Championship, age-group championships, rapid and blitz championships, and qualification competitions. The national Open and Women’s Championships bring together the country’s leading players. Their formats may include classical knockout matches, rapid and blitz tiebreaks, substantial prize funds, and qualification stages for younger or developing competitors. Youth championships are organized for boys and girls across age groups from Under 8 through Under 18. These events provide a pathway from regional and chess-school competitions to national titles and international representation. The federation also develops the Chess Tour Azerbaijan, a coordinated series of international chess festivals held in different parts of the country. The 2026 program includes events in Baku, Sheki, Lankaran, Shamakhi, Guba, and other Azerbaijani cities. The Baku Open is one of the federation’s largest recurring international events. It features several rating sections, classical chess, titled players, junior categories, and participants from numerous national federations. The 2026 edition attracted almost 900 players and offered a total prize fund of $50,000. Other international festivals provide classical, rapid, blitz, junior, and norm-tournament opportunities. By taking major competitions beyond Baku, the federation supports regional chess development while giving international visitors an opportunity to experience different parts of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan Chess Federation has also helped deliver major global events. Azerbaijan hosted the 2016 Chess Olympiad in Baku, as well as the FIDE World Cup and FIDE Women’s World Cup in 2023. These competitions demonstrated the country’s ability to organize events at the highest international level.

Youth development is one of the federation’s central responsibilities. Young players can progress through chess schools, regional competitions, national age-group championships, training camps, international festivals, and official national-team selection. The federation supports promising juniors through advanced preparation and opportunities to compete against experienced players. In addition, youth sections within major festivals allow developing players to gain national and international rating experience. Azerbaijan’s junior teams compete in world, European, and regional championships. The federation manages team selection, player registration, coaching, travel coordination, and communication with international chess bodies. The senior Open and Women’s national teams represent Azerbaijan at the Chess Olympiad, European Team Championships, World Team Championships, and other official competitions. Azerbaijani teams have earned major international medals and remain regular contenders in leading team events. The federation also works to strengthen professional tournament administration. Its activities include arbiter education, technical seminars, organizer cooperation, rating submissions, fair-play procedures, and the use of electronic boards and live-game transmission. International cooperation forms another important part of its program. The Azerbaijan Chess Federation works with FIDE, the European Chess Union, neighboring federations, national sports authorities, and local organizers. Recent cooperation projects have included joint training camps, arbiter-development programs, and new regional chess initiatives. Through national championships, international festivals, youth development, professional training, and national-team support, the Azerbaijan Chess Federation provides the central organizational structure for chess across Azerbaijan.
