White Rook Chess Club, officially known in Azerbaijani as Ağ Top Şahmat Klubu, is a chess club, training academy, and tournament organizer based in Baku, Azerbaijan. The organization also operates publicly under the name Ağ Top Şahmat Akademiyası. The club provides chess education and competitive opportunities for children, developing juniors, adult learners, and experienced tournament players. Its activities combine regular instruction, individual coaching, group training, qualification competitions, FIDE-rated tournaments, and preparation for national and international events. International Arbiter Javanshir Baghirov is the club’s principal public representative, coach, and tournament director. He is also an experienced chess instructor and has served as chief arbiter or organizer at numerous rated competitions. Together with the club’s coaching team, arbiters, administrators, and volunteers, he supports both its educational program and its larger tournament projects.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Chess

Tournament organization is a major part of White Rook Chess Club’s work. The club organizes classical, rapid, blitz, youth, rating, and international norm tournaments in Baku and other regions of Azerbaijan. Its tournament portfolio includes the White Rook Cup, Novruz Cup rapid and blitz events, qualification competitions, youth tournaments, and internationally rated festivals. These events provide playing opportunities for beginners, developing juniors, experienced club players, titled competitors, and participants seeking national categories or FIDE ratings. White Rook Chess Club has also cooperated with chess schools, regional organizers, and the Azerbaijan Chess Federation. This cooperation allows the club to deliver larger competitions with official rating submissions, qualified arbiters, published pairings and results, live games, and international participation. One of its most important current projects is the Guba Open International Chess Festival. The event is jointly organized by White Rook Chess Club and the Azerbaijan Chess Federation. The festival combines several classical rating groups with junior, rapid, blitz, and international norm competitions. The second Guba Open takes place in 2026 and is dedicated to the memory of International Arbiter Gudrat Ismayilov. The program includes opportunities for players to compete for Grandmaster and International Master norms, while additional groups make the festival accessible to lower-rated players and juniors. By organizing competitions in several formats and rating categories, White Rook Chess Club creates a pathway from introductory tournament experience to serious international chess.

🎓 Chess Training and Player Development

Chess education forms the foundation of the club’s daily activities. White Rook Chess Club provides group lessons and individual coaching for players at different stages of development. Beginners learn the rules, piece movement, notation, basic tactical patterns, checkmating techniques, and fundamental strategic principles. Developing players study calculation, positional play, opening preparation, endgames, time management, and practical tournament decision-making. The club’s training program also prepares students for qualification examinations, age-group championships, national rating tournaments, and FIDE-rated events. Young players can gain experience through internal competitions before progressing to larger regional and international tournaments. Experienced coaches help students analyze their games, identify recurring mistakes, and create structured improvement plans. Practical play is combined with tactical exercises, theoretical instruction, and tournament preparation. The academy promotes chess as a way to develop concentration, logical thinking, patience, discipline, and independent decision-making. At the same time, its competitive program gives ambitious students opportunities to test their progress against players from other clubs and federations. Through structured coaching, frequent competitions, international festivals, and cooperation with the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, White Rook Chess Club supports the continued development of chess players in Baku and throughout Azerbaijan.
