Club Escacs Valls is a Catalan chess club and tournament organizer based in Valls, in the province of Tarragona, Spain. The club welcomes children, young players, adults, beginners, recreational members, and experienced tournament competitors. The organization provides a regular meeting place for friendly games, training, analysis, internal activities, and preparation for official competitions. In addition, members represent the club in the Catalan Chess League and in individual and team events organized by the Catalan Chess Federation and its Tarragona territorial delegation. Francesc Blasco Cusidó serves as President of Club Escacs Valls. He its Tarragona territorial delegation is also an experienced tournament director and one of the club’s principal public representatives. Together with club officials, instructors, team captains, arbiters, members, and volunteers, he supports the organization’s competitive, educational, and community programs.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Chess

Tournament organization is an important part of Club Escacs Valls’ work. The club supports classical, rapid, youth, team, and community chess events in Valls, Puigpelat, and other locations within the Alt Camp area. One of its principal recurring competitions is the Open Internacional d’Escacs de Puigpelat. The event is organized in cooperation with Puigpelat Town Council, the Catalan Chess Federation, and its Tarragona territorial delegation. It has developed into an established stop on the Catalan international rapid-chess circuit. The tournament reached its ninth edition in 2026. It features nine rounds of nationally and internationally rated rapid chess and attracts grandmasters, titled players, experienced club competitors, juniors, women, and senior players. Francesc Blasco Cusidó serves as tournament director. Club Escacs Valls also collaborates on territorial championships and youth competitions. Its tournament activity has included events dedicated to Francesc Terreu, training tournaments, rapid competitions, simultaneous exhibitions, and chess activities connected with public festivals in Valls. Competitive members participate in the Lliga Catalana, the Copa Catalana, Tarragona territorial competitions, youth team events, and individual championships. The club has previously competed in Catalonia’s top team division and has developed players who have represented Spain at European and world youth competitions.

🎓 Chess School and Club Life

Chess education forms a central part of the club’s program. Club Escacs Valls provides lessons for children from five years of age, as well as training opportunities for teenagers and adults. Beginners can learn the rules, notation, tactical patterns, basic strategy, and the correct use of chess clocks. More experienced players can improve their calculation, positional understanding, opening preparation, endgame technique, and tournament performance. Young members can progress from introductory lessons to internal competitions, Tarragona age-group events, Catalan championships, team chess, and national or international youth tournaments. The club’s youth program has produced strong individual and team results across several age categories. Club Escacs Valls also participates in community activities that introduce chess to a wider audience. These include tournaments and simultaneous exhibitions at local festivals, cooperation with municipal organizations, and events designed for people who may not yet belong to a federated chess club. Through regular training, youth development, league participation, tournament organization, and community chess, Club Escacs Valls continues to support chess in Valls, Puigpelat, and the wider Alt Camp region.
