♟️ About Chembur Gymkhana

Chembur Gymkhana is a long-established sports and community organization based in Chembur East, Mumbai. Founded in 1947, the club has developed into a major local center for sports, fitness, recreation, and social activities.

Although it is a multi-sport institution rather than a dedicated chess club, chess forms part of its permanent indoor-sports program. The gymkhana provides a shared carrom and chess area where members can meet for friendly games, practice, and informal competition.

Surinder Sharma serves as President of Chembur Gymkhana. The current management structure also includes officials responsible for administration, sports, finance, and individual sporting sections. Balkrishna Parab serves as the Sectional Secretary for Carrom and Chess, supporting the organization of chess activities within the club.

🏆 Chess Tournaments and Competitive Activity

Chembur Gymkhana organizes the recurring All India FIDE Rapid Rating Open Chess Tournament in Mumbai. The competition gives players an opportunity to complete several internationally rated rapid games during a one-day event.

The tournament reached its fourth edition in 2026. It is registered with the All India Chess Federation and submitted for FIDE Rapid rating. The 2026 competition features nine Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move.

The tournament attracts players from Mumbai, Maharashtra, and other parts of India. Its open format accommodates experienced competitors, developing players, women, juniors, seniors, and participants seeking to establish or improve their FIDE Rapid ratings.

Chembur Gymkhana provides the playing venue and works with qualified tournament officials on registration, pairings, arbitration, equipment, rating submissions, and event administration. FI Rajababu Gajengi is listed as Tournament Director for the 2026 edition, while Ganesh Patil serves as the published tournament contact.

The event has become an established part of Mumbai’s rapid-chess schedule. Its recurring editions demonstrate the gymkhana’s continued commitment to hosting organized competitive chess alongside its wider sporting program.

🌱 Sports Facilities and Community Life

Chembur Gymkhana offers a broad range of indoor and outdoor sporting facilities. Its program includes badminton, billiards and snooker, carrom and chess, cricket, swimming, squash, table tennis, lawn tennis, fitness training, and other recreational activities.

This multi-sport environment allows chess to reach members who may initially visit the gymkhana for another activity. At the same time, open FIDE-rated tournaments bring outside competitors into the venue and connect the organization with the wider Indian chess community.

The permanent carrom and chess facility supports informal play between major tournaments. Therefore, members can enjoy chess as a recreational activity while the annual FIDE Rapid event provides a route into formally rated competition.

Through member activities, dedicated sporting facilities, and nationally registered chess tournaments, Chembur Gymkhana contributes to the sporting life of Chembur and the wider Mumbai area.
