The Federación Navarra de Ajedrez, commonly known as FNA, is the governing organization for federated chess in Navarra, Spain. In Basque, the organization is known as Nafarroako Xake Federakundea. Based at the Casa del Deporte in the Navarra Arena complex in Pamplona, the federation coordinates official chess activity throughout the autonomous community. Its responsibilities include player and club licensing, competition regulations, tournament administration, national and international rating procedures, regional championships, team competitions, youth development, and the training of chess instructors and arbiters. The federation also represents Navarrese chess within the wider structure of the Spanish Chess Federation. Mariano de Pablos Fernández has served as President of the Federación Navarra de Ajedrez since January 2026. He is an experienced player, arbiter, national chess instructor, and International Organizer. His connection with Navarrese chess dates back to the 1980s, and he previously served as the first director of the Navarra Chess School.

🏆 Championships and Tournament Activity

Federación Navarra de Ajedrez administers a broad program of individual, team, classical, rapid, and blitz competitions. Its official calendar includes the Navarra Individual Championship, team championships, rapid and blitz championships, promotional tournaments, school competitions, and events organized in cooperation with affiliated clubs and other institutions. The federation manages competitions for players of different ages and experience levels. Established competitors can participate in official regional championships and team leagues, while developing and unrated players can enter promotional events designed to provide practical tournament experience. In addition, FNA supports open tournaments organized by clubs and local partners throughout Navarra. It publishes regulations, registration information, pairings, standings, results, rating details, and official competition documents through its website. The federation is also the organizer of the Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Pamplona – Pepe Leuza in Memoriam. The international classical tournament commemorates Pepe Leuza García, an important figure in Navarrese chess, and brings together local players, visiting competitors, and titled participants for FIDE-rated competition in Pamplona.

🎓 Youth Development and Chess Education

Youth chess is one of the federation’s principal areas of activity. Federación Navarra de Ajedrez coordinates the Circuito Escolar, the Juegos Deportivos de Navarra, school tournaments, age-group competitions, and development activities for children and teenagers. Young players can begin through school or introductory chess programs before progressing to regional championships and nationally rated competition. The federation’s competition structure helps juniors learn tournament rules, use chess clocks, develop strategic and tactical skills, and gain experience against players from different clubs. The federation also operates development and pre-development programs for promising young players. These activities provide additional training beyond regular club sessions and help prepare selected juniors for regional, Spanish, and international competitions. Professional education is another important responsibility. FNA organizes courses for chess instructors and arbiters, together with seminars and continuing-development activities. Dedicated committees oversee training standards, competition rules, arbitration, and disciplinary matters. Through regional championships, school chess, junior development, professional training, and international tournament organization, Federación Navarra de Ajedrez provides the central structure for organized chess throughout Navarra.
