♟️ About Federación Navarra de Ajedrez

Federación Navarra de Ajedrez (FNA), known in Basque as Nafarroako Xake Federakundea, is the governing body for federated chess in Navarra, Spain. Based at the Casa del Deporte – Kirol Etxea in the Navarra Arena complex in Pamplona, the federation coordinates official chess activity throughout the autonomous community. Its responsibilities include player and club licensing, competition regulations, regional championships, team leagues, rating administration, youth chess, instructor and arbiter development, and representation of Navarrese chess within the wider Spanish federation structure. The FNA runs an extensive annual competition program covering classical, rapid, and blitz chess, individual and team championships, school tournaments, the Juegos Deportivos de Navarra, and competitions for different age groups. Moreover, it supports tournaments organized by affiliated clubs throughout Navarra and provides regulations, registrations, pairings, results, and official competition documentation. Youth development remains a major part of its work through the Circuito Escolar and age-group championships from U8 through U18. Mariano de Pablos Fernández has served as President since January 2026, returning to a position he previously held from 1996 to 1998. He is an experienced player, arbiter, national instructor, and International Organizer. His current strategic priorities include strengthening elite junior development, expanding participation, bringing more high-level chess to Navarra, and increasing the profile of the regional championship. The executive team also includes Vice President and Treasurer Diego Moral Barragán, Secretary and Technical Director Mikel Huerga Leache, and General Manager Marta Beorlegui.

🏆 Navarra Championships and Competition

The federation administers Navarra’s principal official chess championships. Its calendar includes the Campeonato Navarro Absoluto Individual, regional team leagues, individual and team rapid championships, individual and team blitz championships, veteran competitions, and other federation events. The 2026 Navarra Individual Championship was played from April 18 to May 30. Earlier in the year, the federation organized the Navarra Individual Rapid Championship on January 10 and the Team Rapid Championship on February 28. Team chess is another core responsibility. The FNA manages several divisions of the Campeonato Navarro por Equipos, providing a structured competitive pathway for affiliated clubs across the region.

🎓 Youth Chess and School Competition

The federation operates one of its broadest programs through the Circuito Escolar and Juegos Deportivos de Navarra. During the 2025–2026 school season, the Circuito Escolar included tournaments organized with schools and clubs in Pamplona, Estella, Lekunberri, and other communities. Individual events regularly attracted large fields, with several 2026 tournaments allowing up to 180 participants. The Juegos Deportivos de Navarra provide another pathway for developing players. In 2026, the program included individual and team competitions across U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 categories. Final stages were held at venues including Estadio Larrabide in Pamplona. The federation also maintains dedicated technical development programs. Aitor Huarte Zozaya leads the Tecnificación area, while Álvaro Miranda Ordobás coordinates the Circuito Escolar and Diego Moral Barragán oversees the schools and institutes championship.

🌍 International Chess in Pamplona

A major objective of the current leadership is to strengthen international tournament chess in Navarra. In February 2026, Pamplona hosted the inaugural Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez “Ciudad de Pamplona – Pepe Leuza in Memoriam”, created in memory of eight-time Navarra champion José Leuza García. The event was developed in cooperation with the Asociación Cultural de Ajedrez Pepe Leuza and attracted titled players from Spain and abroad. GM Carlos Daniel Albornoz Cabrera won the first edition with 7/9, ahead of IM Kamil Dzida on tiebreak. The field also included Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, promising juniors, and leading Navarrese players. The tournament will return with a second edition in February 2027, confirming the project as part of the region’s developing international calendar.

🤝 Chess and Social Programs

The FNA also uses chess beyond conventional competition. In January 2026, it signed an agreement with Spain’s Secretaría General de Instituciones Penitenciarias to develop chess activities at the Pamplona Penitentiary Centre. The program uses chess as an educational and cognitive activity and forms part of the federation’s broader social-development work. In addition, the FNA maintains dedicated commissions for chess and psychology, chess for older adults, solidarity initiatives, technical work in Basque, and social-media communication. Therefore, its activity extends from elite competition and junior development to educational and community projects.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Mariano de Pablos Fernández became President following his appointment in January 2026. His connection with Navarrese chess dates to the 1980s: he was Navarra youth champion in 1984, became the first Director of the Escuela Navarra de Ajedrez in 1995, and later served his first term as federation President. The current Board includes Diego Moral Barragán as Vice President and Treasurer, Mikel Huerga Leache as Secretary, and Oier Layana Medrano and José María Díez Simón as board members. Marta Beorlegui manages the federation’s administrative operations. The federation works from its permanent office at Navarra Arena, where it provides administrative services to players, clubs, arbiters, instructors, and other members of the Navarrese chess community.
