Šahovski klub Krapina is a Croatian chess club and tournament organizer based in Krapina, in the Krapina-Zagorje County. The club traces its history to 1952. Following a period of inactivity, it was re-established in 1996 and celebrated 30 years of continuous activity in 2026.

The club welcomes adult players, juniors, beginners, recreational members, and experienced competitors. Its activities include regular chess practice, player training, team competition, youth instruction, rated tournaments, and cooperation with schools, local authorities, and regional sporting organizations.

Krapina has produced several distinguished chess players and officials. WGM Mirjana Medić and WFM Radmila Švaljek have played central roles in the club’s competitive, educational, and organizational work. Both are qualified chess instructors and International Arbiters. Their experience allows the club to organize nationally and internationally rated competitions with qualified technical administration.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Chess

Tournament organization is one of the principal activities of Šahovski klub Krapina. The club organizes classical, rapid, and blitz competitions for local players, juniors, experienced competitors, and international visitors.

Its main classical event is Open Krapina, an international tournament that reached its 14th edition in 2026. The competition attracts players from Croatia and neighboring countries and is submitted for FIDE Standard rating. The club provides tournament regulations, registration, pairings, qualified arbiters, chess equipment, rating submissions, and published results.

Another important recurring event is the Miljenko Medić Memorial Blitz Tournament. The competition commemorates Miljenko Medić, a successful Croatian player and long-serving member of Šahovski klub Krapina. He helped the club progress from the Fourth League to the Second League Centre and represented physically disabled players at major international competitions.

The memorial traditionally takes place during the Week of Kajkavian Culture and the Krapina Sports Days. It has attracted grandmasters, international masters, FIDE masters, juniors, women, veterans, and players from several national federations.

In 2026, the Miljenko Medić Memorial includes separate A and B tournaments. Both competitions feature eleven rounds of FIDE-rated blitz chess at five minutes plus a three-second Bronstein delay.

Šahovski klub Krapina also organizes tournaments connected with Krapina City Day, youth training events, county competitions, and other local chess activities. In addition, the club provides technical support for championships organized by the Krapina-Zagorje County Chess Federation.

Competitive team chess remains another important part of the club’s identity. Its first team has competed continuously in the Second Croatian League Centre since 2013. The club also enters a second senior team and participates in regional cadet leagues and county team championships.

🎓 Youth Development and Club Life

Youth chess has been part of the club’s program since the Krapina chess school was launched in 1998. The initiative was established by Mirjana Medić and Radmila Švaljek to give children in Krapina access to structured chess instruction and regular competition.

Young players learn the rules, tactical patterns, strategic planning, calculation, notation, clock use, and tournament procedures. Training also helps children develop concentration, patience, logical thinking, independent decision-making, and sporting discipline.

The club holds regular youth activities and organizes introductory and training tournaments. In 2026, it worked with Augusta Cesarca Primary School to deliver the Mali Krapinek training tournament for young members of Šahovski klub Krapina and Šahovski klub Krapinske Toplice.

Club juniors also represent Krapina in regional cadet leagues, youth festivals, individual championships, and rapid tournaments. This structure gives developing players a pathway from their first chess lessons to official team and individual competition.

Adult members participate in regular practice, league preparation, friendly games, internal activities, and federation-rated tournaments. Experienced players also support younger members through coaching, game analysis, tournament assistance, and team participation.

Through international tournaments, league competition, youth instruction, qualified arbitration, and community cooperation, Šahovski klub Krapina continues to support chess development in Krapina and the wider Croatian Zagorje region.
