♟️ About Šachklub Sokol Klatovy

Šachklub Sokol Klatovy (ŠK Sokol Klatovy) is a chess club based in Klatovy, Plzeň Region, Czech Republic. The present club structure has operated under Tělocvičná jednota Sokol Klatovy since 1993, although organized chess in Klatovy has a considerably longer history. The club is registered with the Czech Chess Federation (Šachový svaz České republiky) and competes within the Plzeň regional chess structure. Its regular chess activities are centered at the Klatovy Sokol hall on Kpt. Jaroše Street. The club combines adult and youth team competition with a particularly extensive junior chess program. It organizes regional youth championships, school tournaments, training groups for children from beginner to advanced level, and competitions for young players. Its juniors participate in the Czech national youth league system and regularly qualify for national championships. The club’s major international project is the annual O pohár města Klatov (Klatovy City Cup), a large summer chess festival featuring several FIDE-rated classical sections alongside rapid, blitz, youth, and senior competitions. Ing. Karel Nováček is a principal organizer and one of the most useful operational contacts for ŠK Sokol Klatovy. He is also active in the Youth Commission of the Plzeň Regional Chess Association and served as Chief Organizer of the 2026 Klatovy festival. Ing. Pavel Hrdlica served as Tournament Director. The club remained highly active during 2026, hosting regional youth championships, competing in the 1st Youth League, producing a Czech national youth champion, and organizing the 32nd O pohár města Klatov from June 27 to July 5.

📜 History and Development

The history of chess in Klatovy extends well beyond the present club organization. During the twentieth century, local chess players competed through several sporting structures before the sections were reunited. A major turning point came on July 1, 1993, when the unified chess section joined Sokol Klatovy under the name Šachklub Sokol Klatovy. Sokol provided a permanent playing base in the Klatovy Sokol hall. The same year also saw the first edition of the modern O pohár města Klatov. The tournament subsequently became a major source of sporting activity and visibility for the club and has continued for more than three decades.

🎓 Youth Chess and Development

Youth development is one of ŠK Sokol Klatovy’s strongest areas. The club offers chess groups for children approximately 5–14 years old, from complete beginners to experienced tournament players. In 2026, Klatovy hosted several important Plzeň regional youth competitions. The Regional Rapid Youth Championship on January 31 attracted 64 players, while the April championship for the U8 and U10 categories brought another 36 young competitors to the Klatovy Sokol hall. Club players achieved numerous podium finishes. Andy Oliberius became regional U10 champion, while several other Klatovy juniors qualified for the Czech Bohemian youth championships. The club also achieved an outstanding national result through Barbora Tykalová, who won the 2026 Czech Girls U12 Championship with a perfect 9/9 score.

♜ Youth Team Chess

ŠK Sokol Klatovy competed in 1. liga mládeže B during the 2025–2026 season, one of the Czech national youth team competitions. The squad included strong developing players such as Jan Váňa, Matyáš Roubal, Barbora Tykalová, and other Klatovy juniors. The team completed the season in seventh place, scoring 12 match points and 34.5 individual board points. In addition, Klatovy fielded a team at the major Zaječice 2026 Czech youth team event. Barbora Tykalová again led the team strongly, scoring 6.5/9 on first board.

🌟 O pohár města Klatov

The O pohár města Klatov is the club’s flagship tournament and one of its longest-running projects. The 32nd edition took place from June 27 to July 5, 2026 at Kulturní dům Klatovy. The festival contained three main classical tournaments: FIDE Open A, FIDE Open B, and FIDE Open C, the latter serving as the Memorial of Ing. Jaromír Novák for players aged 50+. All three sections used a nine-round Swiss system with a time control of two hours per game plus 30 seconds per move. Participation was substantial. Open A attracted 75 players, Open B 132 players, and Open C 34 players, giving the three classical sections a combined field of 241 competitors. Additional rapid, blitz, and youth competitions expanded the overall festival program. IM Vojtěch Straka won Open A. Viktória Strazhnyk took first place in Open B, while FM Pavel Kopta won the senior Open C. The festival also served as the Plzeň Regional Championship for men and women and as a Czech Sokol chess championship. Therefore, it combines international open competition with important regional and national Sokol titles.
