♟️ About Šachová škola Bohumín, z.s.

Šachová škola Bohumín, z.s. is a chess club and training organization based in Bohumín, Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic. Established in 2017, the association focuses strongly on youth chess while also fielding adult teams and organizing local and international competitions. Its activities connect Bohumín with the wider Moravian-Silesian chess community, particularly through close cooperation with SK Slavia Orlová. Youth development is central to the club’s identity. Šachová škola Bohumín provides competitive opportunities for children through regional Grand Prix events, Czech youth championships, school competitions, summer chess camps, and its own tournament program. At senior level, the organization fields teams in regional and district leagues. Its largest event is the annual Open Bohumín, an international FIDE-rated festival offering Master, Challenger, junior, senior, rapid, and blitz competitions. Ing. Pavel Tchuř serves as President of Šachová škola Bohumín, while Jiří Novák plays a major operational role in training, team activities, and tournament organization. Novák served as Festival Director of the 9th Open Bohumín 2026, held from July 4–12, 2026. The club also finished the 2025–2026 team season with both its first and second teams in third place in their respective competitions. Its 2026 program continues in the autumn, including the rescheduled Open Petřvald on October 3, 2026.

🏛️ Organization and Club Activity

Šachová škola Bohumín combines the functions of a traditional chess club with those of a dedicated chess school. Pavel Tchuř is the association’s current President and remains active as a player, while Jiří Novák is closely involved in coaching, tournament management, and accompanying junior players to competitions. The club maintains regular competitive activity in Bohumín and works closely with neighboring chess organizations. This cooperation is particularly visible with SK Slavia Orlová, with which Bohumín jointly organizes tournaments and youth activities. Its program covers classical chess, rapid chess, blitz, team competition, junior training, camps, and international events. Therefore, young players can progress from introductory training into rated competition without leaving the club structure.

♜ Team Chess

During the 2025–2026 season, Šachová škola Bohumín entered teams in both regional and district competition. The first team competed in Krajská soutěž C of the Moravian-Silesian regional system. After a season that included victories against Rychvald and Třinec as well as several closely contested matches, the team finished third overall. The second team competed in the Karviná district championship. Its lineup was notably youth-oriented, often fielding several junior players alongside a small number of experienced adults. The team also completed its season in third place. This structure gives developing players practical experience in long time-control team chess while maintaining a competitive senior squad.

🎓 Youth Chess and Development

Youth chess remains one of the strongest areas of the organization. Bohumín players regularly participate in the Moravian-Silesian youth Grand Prix, regional championships, school competitions, and Czech national qualification events. One of the club’s leading juniors, Mathias Jordan, finished second in the 2025 Moravian and Silesian U14 Championship, earning qualification for the 2026 Czech U14 Championship. He represented Šachová škola Bohumín at the national championship in March 2026. Jordan continued his strong season during Open Bohumín. In the festival’s youth rapid competition, he scored 8/9 and won the overall tournament as well as the U14 category. The club also organized two summer day-camp sessions in Bohumín in 2026, combining chess training with sports and other activities. Jiří Novák served as the principal contact for the program.

🌟 Open Bohumín

The Open Bohumín is the organization’s flagship international project. Šachová škola Bohumín organizes the festival together with SK Slavia Orlová, z.s. – Chess Section. The 9th Open Bohumín took place from July 4–12, 2026 at the Bospor Sports Hall in Bohumín. Jiří Novák served as Festival Director, while IA Jiří Kopta was Chief Arbiter. The program was considerably broader than a single classical Open. It included the A – Master, B – Challenger, 11th Lukáš Krůl Memorial, an S50+ tournament, and separate youth events for U8, U10, U12, and U14 players. Additional competitions included youth rapid, an open rapid tournament, and the traditional Ivan Jankovec Memorial Blitz. The main Master competition consisted of nine FIDE-rated classical rounds and attracted titled players from the Czech Republic and abroad.

⚡ Tournaments and Community Chess

Beyond Open Bohumín, the organization supports a varied tournament calendar throughout the Moravian-Silesian region. In December 2025, its players and organizers participated in the DAFO Cup, which attracted 145 players from four countries. The club also regularly sends groups of juniors to regional rapid events and works with schools on competitive chess. Another recurring project is Open Petřvald. After technical problems at its venue forced the original 2026 date to be abandoned, the tournament was rescheduled for October 3, 2026 at the Cultural House in Petřvald, with capacity for up to 160 players. Through these activities, Šachová škola Bohumín maintains a balance between competitive adult chess, international tournament organization, and a substantial development pathway for younger players.
